so I'm sharing here instead of in my real life.
My DD will be 13 on NYE. She is super-tall, slender, has a mass of curly hair and has been in speech therapy since she was 2. She had undiagnosed hearing loss due to fluid in her ear canals. She never had any ear infections that would indicate a problem, and responded to requests as well as any 2-year-old would. She just didn't say anything beyond "Mama," "Dada," and "Da" (her word for her brother's name, which begins with a "K," so...).
Anyway, once we figured out what the issue was, she got tubes and started therapy. She has had therapy through ECI, a private therapist, the university here in town that has a renowned speech pathology program and, since she started kindergarten, through the public school system. She has had tubes in her ears three times, her adenoids removed twice, and her tonsils removed (just once, so far).
She is lucky in that she hasn't really been teased by other kids. It's happened exactly twice: once at day care and once at dance class. At day care, her older brother heard and pushed the child who was teasing her. At dance class, her dance teacher escorted the child out to her mother and told her mother that when she could behave properly, she could come back.
But it's become evident as she got older that she was different and she would get embarrassed when asked to repeat herself. She wouldn't go order food at a concession stand or a fast-food restaurant.
She is currently the only student at her junior high receiving speech therapy. Her therapist travels from the middle school twice a week for her sessions.
BUT... (and you saw this coming)
I'm going to her ARD meeting on Friday and we are finally at the "D" part of that acronym!!! Her therapist told her yesterday that she was going to recommend that DD "graduate" from therapy when we meet on Friday. it is a conditional dismissal -- the therapist will meet with her once a month to check her progress and if she starts regressing, the therapy will resume full force, but still...this has been a long time coming!!!

Congratulations to your dd! It's a very big deal for her, and for your family. I love to hear stories like this (as a SLP about to begin my workday).

Congratulations to your dd! It's a very big deal for her, and for your family. I love to hear stories like this (as a SLP about to begin my workday). Seriously, y'all are miracle workers. Even though DD has been in therapy for years, the immediate difference was HUGE. The past couple of years they've mainly been working on getting her to replicate sounds in spontaneous speech. It's funny though; the rest of us have a super Southeast Texas twang, but DD doesn't. She has that perfect midwestern inflection because therapy is where she learned to talk, not necessary by hearing us speak!

That's great. My d [HASH]2 had hearing loss due to fluid in her ears also - but we caught it really early. She only had to go to speech therapy for a year. I'm really happy for you and your daughter!
