Random thing--two out of the three addresses I drew yesterday suggested sending Covid-themed postcards. Isn't that interesting? I wonder if they have actually received any. I need to go check their walls.
Not surprisingly, I didn't happen to have any on hand, but I did have some pandemic themed stickers from various scrapbooking kits (I'm still a scrapper) so I stuck those on and sent them off.

this sounds neat! I think I may have signed up for Postcrossings once a while ago... probably because I heard about it here? But if I did, I don't think I ever sent or received cards. Getting happy mail instead of just junk mail would be kinda fun... especially if it didn't have any deadlines or restrictions associated with it. I didn't do well with ATC swaps, pocket letters, etc. because the 'theme' and deadlines pressure got to me after a while. lol. (plus, I think the pocket letter website I was on ended up changing to a paid membership, which sucked-- that took my enthusiasm for it away quick.) I do art journaling, and postcards might be a fun way to get interesting collage fodder for my journaling- stamps, postcard images, etc. kiera , you mentioned pen pals, too. Not to derail this thread, but I've tried a few times to find a site for pen pals... I think having a 'real' long-term pen pal who has similar interests would be fun, but I never had luck finding a good site. I think the couple I did find once upon a time sort of fizzled out after a couple letters. Do you have any suggestions for pen pal websites? I've found most of my current pals on Instagram and Reddit - on IG, you can search different mail related hashtags to find people. You can search findapenpal, snailmail, penpals, stuff like that. On Reddit, r/penpals is very active! The League of Extraordinary Penpals is another site you can try, I haven't used it myself yet but it's run by the same woman who I buy my stationery from and I know that some of the penpals I've met through IG use it and are fans.

How interesting! I have some tiny mask and hand sanitizer brads but unfortunately they won’t fly (no pun intended.) Etsy has a bunch of quarantine and pandemic postcards. These made me laugh: ETA link doesn’t work. Anyway, they say things like, “Greetings from my Living Room - wish you were here” in big block letters. LOL

I'm pretty sure one of my matches needs to be closely watched by MI6 or whatever it is in the UK, as he's from Japan and requested postcards of British royalty "especially Princess Charlotte" and I was like omg I want this man arrested but in the spirit of the thing I printed out a small photo of her waving, on sticker paper, and affixed it to a Grand Canyon postcard with a caption " Hello X! I'm on holiday!". On the back is a Corgi sticker I made, with a random missing about whether she has her own Corgi or shares the queen's.
The whole thing cracked me up. I'm making it my mission to make amusing cards personalized to whatever is in the receiver's profile.

I like the animal ones! Do I need 32? Pondering . . . I just noticed the animal ones on Amazon from theritzyrose don’t have words on the front; the ones on Etsy do. I hope it’s accurate - I’d rather not have “miss you” on postcards sent to people I don’t miss.

I will be sending my first five postcards off on Tuesday. Excited (or concerned, LOL) that this is the beginning of a new hobby, LOL!

This sounds like a fun way to spice it up and make it more fun for yourself and the receiver- great idea! My first five postcards are now sent out into the world and it’s funny the different things they have requested- whether postcards or what they want you to write to them! Lol. My first five cards went to: Germany Brazil NC, US Belgium Netherlands

Another tip--if you receive a lengthy or complex address, or one that also includes a different alphabet, it is often much easier to print the address as a label or on a piece of paper that you can cut out and tape/glue down (just don't tape over the postage stamps).
I just drew someone who lives in an 8 syllable town and as I attempted tiny, tiny writing, I berated myself for not simply printing it out.

Thanks for this! I just joined! I may or may not have Matthew join, too. Now I just need to get to a store that sells postcards.

I purchased a few types of postcards that arrived today, so requested my first five people to send to. They’re from Germany, Russia, Georgia, Finland and The Netherlands! For some reason that variety makes me happy. Reading their profiles/wishes was so interesting! A translator, journalist, cat rescuer (not her job)... just seems neat to connect. And now I better see how people request types of cards - or one person is very new to postcrossing so has no preferences. My DH said he’s going to do it too as long as it can just be occasionally! The postcards I posted about above arrived and are wonderful. I like that some are from an artist and the others - with the masked animals - are from a family-owned business in Ohio, so supporting small businesses. kiera thank you again!

CardBoxer I'm so excited for you! Isn't it fun to discover what people like and want to share? I once pulled someone who was asking for cards to be sent in her son's name - he was I think 8 years old at the time and she was asking for everyone who mailed a card to write him a piece of advice, or . She said that she was going to hold them all until his 13th birthday and then give them to him in an album. I thought that was such a sweet idea.

kiera how fun for the mom and son! Reading what “my” five people want or don’t is fun too! Some want what another one specifically does not want! One is asking for a poem if we want, and another for an interesting phrase or saying in our language. One says no covid cards, another wants them, one handmade and another no handmade, and a person from Georgia (not in the U.S.) does not want Russian cards - makes sense given the political tension. One has faves of Barack Obama and Putin! Snapshots of people - one is a translator, one a journalist, one has lots of rescue cats and one lives with the love of her life - a black cat! The richness of people...

That's part of why I love it so much. You can learn a lot about someone just from what they'd like to receive! It's a great way to "travel" without getting out of your pajamas lol

You just reminded me of a similar request for a couple getting married. A friend planned a year in advance to collect cards with best wishes from all over the world to give to them on their wedding day. It was fun choosing the card and a variety of "Love" stamps for postage.

I wondered if any of you seasoned Postcrossers have had this happen. I ordered and received a bunch of different types of postcards. One of my fave designs is flimsy. It’s a beautiful, fun design by an artist but I’m not comfortable mailing it as is. Even some really inexpensive postcards on Amazon were much thicker.
The seller enclosed a thank you business postcard, which was heavier than the ones to mail, which was kind of funny. She told me she’d changed printers and will go back ot the first one and offered to send me a label to send them back. I won’t do that since I like them and figured I could adhere a thin piece of cardstock, trimmed so everything is even. Have any of you added bulk to a too-thin postcard?
Since we can make our own I figure it would be okay. The Post Office has maximum thicknesses allowed, but I don’t have a way to measure.
Thanks!
