A new thing that seems to be happening around here is having the tip calculate and printed on the receipt. They usually give you options, often starting at 15% and going to 22/25%.
Anyway, it looked weird to me and I realized that they were calculating based on the pretax amount. I've always tipped in the total amount.
Am I the only one that does it this way? Have been wrong my whole life?

Depends on the service. If the service is great, they get 20% on full bill. Then I step down from there if the service is lacking.

I tip on the amount of work involved in serving us and how good it was. Its just the two of us when we eat out and it seems there is just as much work involved in taking care of us as there would be in taking care of a party of four. So if I went by the amount of the bill, it would make the tip lower for the same amount of trips to our table. Also, it helps if the server is attentive to our needs or not.

Guidelines have always been to tip on pre-tax but that’s too much math. I just calculate 20% of total then round up depending on how good the service was.

I live where the tax is 5%, so I use the tax amount x 4 to get to 20%, and adjust from there. I guess that would be pretax then.

We don’t have sales tax here, but I tip on the pretax amount when I’m somewhere that does.

I do pretax for a couple of reasons- we have a higher tax amount and that adds to the bills quite a bit in some cases. But the biggest reason is that in WA. State servers already get at least minimum wage so the “premise” of how we are tipping to make up the difference to equal minimum wage doesn’t even apply here. I still tip, and I think well in most cases, but it’s on the pretax amount.

In the old days of 15% being typical and living in a place with a 8% tax rate - I just doubled the tax which would be 16% on the pretax amount. Now I typically do 20% on the pretax amount which works out to about 18% on the total bill.

Tax is 8% here, so I do double the tax as a starting tip.
Adjust up or down based on service.
So, that would be the pre-tax amount, which is what I have always heard is correct.

If I think about it I do pretax but most of the time I don’t take that extra tenth of a second to seek out the non-bolded amount a millimeter above the total. It is a bit of a pet peeve of mine that the suggested tip amounts on bills are usually post-tax.
ETA: I voted pretax because that’s how I think it should be done. I just don’t follow my own rules due to laziness 😆

My dad always said to tip pretax, but I can’t be bothered. Double the total, and the tip is 10% of that. Easy-peasy. Tipping pretax always seems unnecessarily penny-pinching to me, anyway. My dad could be very generous, but also sometimes very frugal. I loved him but I’m not doing that pretax thing.  |

Total. I figure out 10% of the total, then double that number to make 20%. If the server truly goes above & beyond, then perhaps a bit more. Or if we leave a larger than average mess----like the time when my pre-schooler used an entire forest of paper napkins. First the poor guy must have brought us 3 napkins at a time 3 or 4 times before he finally decided to just bring a stack, and then of course, there were several tons of used napkins on the table when we left.  |

We've always been generous tippers, but since this whole Covid thing started, we've been waaayyyyy overtipping. Tip off of otal amount, usually 25-30% unless the service was terrible (and I take into account whether they appear understaffed).

And it’s funny that they’re figuring the tip for you pre-tax, because our suggested tip charts are always post-tax. It kind of annoys me, even though that’s how I always tip. |

I tip a standard 20% pretax for showing up and not spitting in my food. I I tip much better for good or great service and at that point, it’s not a percentage so it doesn’t matter to me. But if I’m going straight 20%, it’s pre-tax.

Total bill.
And while we always have tipped at a minimum 20% , since Covid struggles for service industry we tip a lot more on our bills.
It’s not uncommon for us to get coffee at our local place (not a chain) and our bill be $10, and we given them $20 total or have a dinner bill be $60-70 and we give $100.
One or twice a year at one of our favorite breakfast places, we even tip all the kitchen staff $10 each (7 workers)
