My sweet Ainsley is an incredible reader. It makes me laugh that I have to tell her to put a book away. We are really struggling to find age appropriate reading material at her reading level. I'm not ready to let her lose her innocence and begin reading books with sexual innuendos in them just because it is at her level. She just finished Wonder yesterday. She's read all the Rick Riordan books, the Goddess Girl Series, Esperanza Rising, Black Beauty, The Secret Garden, From The Mixed Up Files, Dork Diaries, The Pegasus Series, 39 Clues, James Pattersons Middle School series, Wind in the Willows, Island of the Blue Dolphins... the list goes on and on... Any suggestions? She's making me crazy saying she needs books

Has she read Roald Dahl? Or Enid Blyton? Phantom Toll Booth? Other EL Konisburg? Emerald Atlas Series Girl who circumvented fairyland in a boat of her own making? Sister Grimm series? Nancy Drew the original series not the modern one. Wonderstruck My daughter is the same but she is now 11. I will have a look at her book shelves

Has she read the Boxcar Children series yet? I recall there only being a handful of books when I was a kid, but I think someone took over the writing and there are dozens now.

I have an advanced reader too. One of the best things I did for her was to stop worrying about finding books that were on her reading level or challenging. She didn't regress in her reading or forget the bigger words that she knew. I was like you and didn't want her reading middle school books yet. I would just take her to the library and let her pick whatever jumps out at her.
A few of the books my kids like/liked at that age: American Girl books, Harry Potter, Choose your Own Adventure, Princess Academy, Princess Diaries. If I think of any others I'll pop back in. My mind is drawing a blank right now.

My 8 yr old dd just finished The Meanest Doll in The World which is part of the Doll People series and she loved it. She also really likes the I Survived books . You might want to check with the children's librarian at your local library for ideas. A suggestion if you have younger children is to have her read to them. My dd loves to pass along her love for reading.

I forgot about this series. Both of my daughters LOVED this series. So much so that they tried to get their brother to read it - not happening!

When I was reading at that age/level, these were the books I loved: Anne of Green Gables (and absolutely everything else by L.M. Montgomery) Girl of the Limberlost All of the Little House on the Prairie books -- ALL of them. Repeatedly.
Just a forewarning: I read "Gone With the Wind" at age 9. The local librarian laughed when I checked it out. My older sister told her, "Don't laugh. She'll read it."

My daughter is the same way.
I bought most of her books on Ebay. We have the Trixie Belden series, Nancy Drew, even some Hardy Boys. Her favorites: Little House on the Prairie, Little Women, Pride & Prejudice, Anne of Green Gables, Harry Potter, The Mysterious Benedict Society, Judy Blume (I think all of the kids books), Elsie Dinsmore (these are Christian based). Her most loved is Out of My Mind.
I also agree with not always needing to read to level - my daughter absolutely loved the Babysitters Club books even though she could read higher - reading for fun is good too. She still reads them when she is looking for something not so heavy.

As a teacher I will caution you about the giver reading levels. The content in these books are not age appropriate at all.
I like to encourage my AR readers to choose a book that is at an appropriate reading level according to AR but worth more points. The more points, the more complex the story.
AR is Accelerated Reader. You can search books by AR level on many sites. Even if she never takes an AR quiz, it can be a good tool.

Hi. Wish our dd's knew each other. I just bought my dd a kindle and she loves it! It is so much better for her then I thought it would be.
I had my dd at the eye dr and he said be very careful of ipad time as it is so bad for the eyes, so that is why I bought the kindle. The kindle is side lit, as opposed to back lit, so there is no eye strain. He told us that kids who read on the ipad are needing glasses much earlier. It appears that dd's generation will have more kids in glasses then any other! Even when dd reads a book, she puts her bookmark 10 pages ahead so she remembers to look up ever few minutes to reduce eye strain.
As as a high school English teacher, I'm like some others here who don't always worry about the level. Yes, dd burns through the books in a day, but I'm not interested in books involving sex and other topics (which will be on the way for an advanced reader by the time they hit grade 6) and if I can't always preview a book I'd rather she stuck to lower level ones. There are so many reasons to back this up, including writing development etc., but I think you're a teacher and you're probably on top of it.
My advanced reader does a mini book report for me after each book. It helps her develop her writing and critical thinking skills, and it teachers her that there are other ways to enjoy reading and the books that she loves. P.

Anything by Brandon Mull: The Fablehaven Series, The Candy Shop War Series.
Wilson Rawls: Where the Red Fern Grows and Summer of the Monkeys. Summer of the Monkeys is such a fun story - it will make her laugh.
Frances Hodgson Burnett: The Little Princess and The Secret Garden
The Underneath by Kathi Appelt
Shannon Hale books - The Goose Girl Series
Number the Stars by Lois Lowery
Kate DiCamillo: Because of Winn Dixie, The Tale of Despereaux, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
Mrs. Piggle Wiggle Series by Betty MacDonald
Waiting for Normal by Leslie Connor - all my students like this book.
The Wicked, Wicked Ladies in the Haunted House by Mary Chase. I loved this book when I was your daughter's age.
Sharon Creech writes clean books for kids your daughter's age: Heartbeat, Ruby Holler
Love, Aubrey by Suzanne Lefleur
Rules by Cynthia Lord
Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine
Any book by Peg Kehret: My Brother Made Me do It, Saving Lily,
Mary Downing Hahn writes great mysteries for younger kids as does Betty Ren Wright.
I think she would like the book Out of My Mind that someone else suggested - great book by Sharon Draper.
I read a lot of books for younger readers as I teach 7 through 9th grades. I want to make sure when I recommend a book to a student they won't be surprised by older content.
