SANTA FE, New Mexico (KABC) -- Actor Alec Baldwin fired a prop firearm that killed a crew member and left the director hospitalized on the set of a Western being filmed in New Mexico, according to the Santa Fe County sheriff.
Director of photography Halyna Hutchins, 42, was rushed by helicopter to a local trauma center, where she died from her injuries, the sheriff's office said. Director Joel Souza, 48, was also injured and is hospitalized.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office says the two were shot during the filming of a scene involving a firearm. The incident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.
The incident happened around 1:50 p.m. Thursday on the set of the film "Rust," starring Baldwin and Jensen Ackles.
The production is being filmed at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, used for a number of Westerns in the past, including "3:10 to Yuma" and "Cowboys & Aliens."
"There was an accident today on the New Mexico set of Rust involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks," a producer said in a statement to ABC News. ".... Production has been halted for the time being. The safety of our cast and crew remains our top priority."
Local authorities placed yellow crime-scene tape around what appears to be an old church on the set.

Imagine how awful he must feel. Something similar killed Brandon Lee on the set of The Crow and I remember wondering how that even happens. I did see a show about it that explained how it happened, and it never should have happened again.
I feel so bad for everyone involved.

I never realized how powerful prop guns were.

My first thought was sadness for him. Not because I don’t care about the one who died and the injured person. But because he must feel so bad.

Didn’t Jon Erik Hexom die from a prop gun as well?

I can’t even imagine how awful he and everyone involved must feel, and of course the deceased and injured 😢.

Didn’t Jon Erik Hexom die from a prop gun as well? He did. I was gutted. I was in primary school and had a huge crush on him. I thought he and Erik Estrada were the most beautiful men to ever walk the earth.

My news just came on with a teaser:
“Celebrity Alec Baldwin is suspected of shooting and killing someone on the set of his new movie.”
Disgusting

This is so sad. Clearly it was an accident. Even though I have some issues with Alec Baldwin, this is just so sad for him.
I believe there was a prop accident / near accident with a knife prop during the production of an episode of 'Dexter' a few years back aswell. They thought they had a fake knife, but turns out it was the real one.
The clickbait headlines of this is just horrific. Shame on them for trying to make it seem like Alec Baldwin did this on purpose!

What a tragic accident Am I the only one that is trying to work out how this happened? I always thought prop guns didn't actually fire anything. ETA - I found this as to how prop guns work - something I never knew about before . LINK

I wonder what the prop-master/armourer has to say about it.

There was no intent involved in this tragic accident and to imply it is ridiculous. I feel awful for everyone involved. I can't imagine how difficult something like this would be to deal with if I was Alec Baldwin.

I don’t know how you recover from something like that if you’re just doing your job with what was provided to you and it results in ending someone’s life. Absolutely tragic.

Count me in as another person who thought fake guns were just that...fake, and not capable of firing anything. And even if they once did fire some sort of fake bullet that surely all of Hollywood learned a lesson after Brandon Lee? There just shouldn't be any moving parts at all in a gun used on a TV/movie set.

With all the cgi and effects we have, prop guns that actually shoot should no longer be used. What a sad story.

Like others, I have some issues with Alec Baldwin, but this is a tragic accident. I can’t imagine how he is feeling right now. How sad for the family and friends of the woman who died. 🥺

This is so sad, for everyone. Can you imagine being on that set?
Please note that I am not blaming him at all, I’m just curious if anyone read anything that indicates why he was pointing at the director and director of photography? Again, I’m not blaming him or suggesting anything nefarious, my logistical mind is just surprised it wasn’t other actors or true stand-ins who were the victims.

It's astonishing to me that in this day and age a gun that can actually fire anything at all is being used on a set. There is no reason for it, as excellent realistic copies of guns are available and all sorts of effects are added in afterwards.
Separately, having worked on movie sets, there has always been an armorer there to assure guns used were safe and (in addition to that) the set was cleared to avoid any error. I'm sure more will come out in days and weeks about the mistakes surrounding this tragedy, but obviously it's an accident that shouldn't have happened.

Pure speculation on my part - it may have been a close up of him firing at the camera. In all likelihood, the DP and director would've been right there. Perhaps they were working with him on what would be the right angle to have it go off, what would look best, what distance to have it from the camera, how he should hold it so that the barrel caught the right light etc...

Tragic. I imagine everyone involved with the production is devastated especially Mr. Baldwin. Time for functioning weapons on sets to go.

Dang the first story I heard on this didn't mention that Alec was the one with the gun. That's horrible. I can't imagine being in his shoes. I was never a huge fan of his but that is beside the point. Poor guy. And then the family of the gal that died. Just a terrible accident.

I wish they would quit calling them "prop guns" They are real guns, all that makes them props is that they use blanks or squids in them and not live ammunition. A gun is still a gun.
They aren't going to use CGI because it costs a fortune to add that in to all the actors scenes where he needs to have a gun.
Actors usually do not want to use complete fakes because they don't weight the same and it shows when they are holding it.
But either way this is a tragic awful accident and I feel for all those involved. I can't imagine the guilt that surrounds an accident like this.

Could be a run through of scene, deciding on best angles and lighting. He probably wasn't supposed to actually pull the trigger or maybe they were shooting the scene and the angle calls for just him aiming towards the camera/just off camera to get that flash. The two directors are often working side by side.
