It's astonishing to me that in this day and age a gun that can actually fire anything at all is being used on a set. There is no reason for it, as excellent realistic copies of guns are available and all sorts of effects are added in afterwards. Separately, having worked on movie sets, there has always been an armorer there to assure guns used were safe and (in addition to that) the set was cleared to avoid any error. I'm sure more will come out in days and weeks about the mistakes surrounding this tragedy, but obviously it's an accident that shouldn't have happened. In a radio show discussing this today, it was said that it can come down to budgets. Adding sound effects and CGI post production is expensive, and this is a cheaper option.

This is so sad, for everyone. Can you imagine being on that set? Please note that I am not blaming him at all, I’m just curious if anyone read anything that indicates why he was pointing at the director and director of photography? Again, I’m not blaming him or suggesting anything nefarious, my logistical mind is just surprised it wasn’t other actors or true stand-ins who were the victims. Pure speculation on my part - it may have been a close up of him firing at the camera. In all likelihood, the DP and director would've been right there. Perhaps they were working with him on what would be the right angle to have it go off, what would look best, what distance to have it from the camera, how he should hold it so that the barrel caught the right light etc... This seems quite possible. It’s amazing how much people effort goes into getting the *right* two second screen time shot, especially for a pivotal part of a movie. What an awful tragedy. I will also join Miss Jen in being equally disgusted in some of the clickbait headlines I’ve seen thus far. Just vile.

I am truly flabbergasted in an age of sophisticated CGI to find out that movies still use real guns.
I am guessing this may be the turning point.

Here's a change.org petition by those in the industry calling for a ban on operating firearms on the set. "On October 21st, 2021 we lost an unbelievably talented cinematographer on the film set of RUST, due to a “real gun” being used and discharged during production. I am in shock and numb to my core. A “prop gun” loaded with “blanks” was discharged during the filming of a scene, which tragically caused the death of Director of Photography Halyna Hutchins, and wounding Director Joel Souza. Halyna graduated from the AFI Conservatory in 2015 with a MFA in Cinematography. I graduated in 2010 with a MFA in Directing. Like everyone in the "AFI Family", we all knew one another. It's a very small community of filmmakers, trying their hardest get their "big break" in the film industry after graduation. Halyna was named as an ASC “Rising Star Cinematographer” in 2019, and was finally entering the Hollywood film industry after hustling and shooting amazing content for half a decade. We need to make sure this never happens again. There is no excuse for something like this to happen in the 21st century. Real guns are no longer needed on film production sets. This isn't the early 90's, when Brandon Lee was killed in the same manner. Change needs to happen before additional talented lives are lost." www.change.org/p/hollywood-it-s-time-to-create-halyna-s-law-which-will-ban-the-use-of-real-firearms-on-film-production-sets-and-create-a-safe-working-environment-for-everyone-involved

And I’m sure you have talented people out there, that can build fake non-working gun replicas that look and feel real. Or force the manufacturers to make them. 😏

I’m starting to see a post supposedly from a crew member make the rounds on social media. Talks about how many walked off the set the morning of the shooting and had written resignation letters. Reasons given were safety concerns, no pay for weeks, no hotel and others. Went on to say that non union workers had been brought in to replace them. There could be a lot more to come out about this tragedy.

I just saw a major news outlet in Norway release a photo of Alec Baldwin. Supposedly a photo of him taken after he came out of a police station beung interviewed (which I am sure is standard procedure in a case like this).
I have two thoughts about it:
1. He is absolutely devestated and crying in the picture. My heart breaks for him, and the trauma he will continue to live with after causing the death of a fellow himan being.
2. Why the fuck am I am seeing this photo? Who the hell is photographing someone in this situation? Who is buying them? Who is making the editorial decision to publish it? This should not be out there! Vultures! It was on the news outlet's front page, so I couldn't opt to not click on it.

My husband heard that the gun was supposed to be loaded with blanks but instead was loaded with live ammunition. Senseless tragedy for all concerned regardless.

He’s clearly devastated, it really does seem repulsive and vulture-ish to photograph a man in those circumstances. I have refused to buy people etc. since the death of Diana, because I realized how exploitive they were and the vulture culture I was contributing to, in even buying them.

Congresswoman Lauren Bieber’s has something to say… What a fucking cunt she is. It feels like because his political leanings are well known, there are people taking extra schadenfreude in it. Just another day in the owning the libs, GOP. Like that heifer. I’m not particularly a fan of that word myself, but it’s 1000% accurate for her.

I’ve never called someone a cunt or a heifer but I think any name someone comes up for her is fitting for her. She is repulsive.

Lots of people dislike his SNL portrayal of DT. Geez. I guess I’m going to need my own tin hat soon.

In a radio show discussing this today, it was said that it can come down to budgets. Adding sound effects and CGI post production is expensive, and this is a cheaper option. Oh that would explain it. Post-production sound effects are standard, they've been doing it in the movies since talking pictures were invented. How many times were Elmer Fudd's gunshots added in? And they certainly could use real unloaded guns, or have fakes made that look exactly like the real thing but don't shoot. Wouldn't even need CGI unless there is an actual need to show a bullet flying. Being 100% accurate in the weight of the gun or any other thing isn't really necessary--as every medical professional can tell you about any medical scene ever filmed. I honestly was shocked that this could happen in the 90s, let alone now! I doubt cost is actually an issue but I'm unsure what the actual reason is? ETA as far as anyone setting him up, I don't think that's a realistic theory as everyone knows he didn't bring his own props with him. But I'm not sure there will be an answer that could be explained away. I mean, why even have live ammo at all on a movie set? I guess not being in the business, there could be some reason I don't know about, but I don't know what it could be. Terrible all around.

With the John Erik Hexum case, my recollection is that it wasn't part of a scene; he was fooling around and the gun went off.

With the John Erik Hexum case, my recollection is that it wasn't part of a scene; he was fooling around and the gun went off. With JEH the gun didn't have a bullet but it had some wadding for the blanks in it and when he was fooling around and pretending to shoot himself in the head, and when he pulled the trigger the wadding hit his head with enough force (since it was so close) it killed him. I don't know why they need to use real guns either. If it is budgetary then I am pretty sure they could cut the pay of the actors, directors, producers etc to cover the CGI. If it is for realism because the gun doesn't have the same weight or whatever then make a heavier fake gun or fill the barrel with something so it can't shoot.
