Today's challenge is to make a card with the main element left uncolored, black and white with a colored background. The twist is to make that colored background one of the traditional Halloween colors - orange, lime green, or purple. Here's mine. I had planned to make one orange and one purple but I forgot and started blending with the same colors again so I will try and do the purple version tomorrow. I did this one by stamping and die cutting the image and then ink blending the background left over from the original image and laying the die cut back in. October share by jo.blackford, on Flickr Masking the image is another option. Another easy way is to die cut or fussy cut a big image and put it over patterned paper. I used scraps of watercolor wash paper from Ella and Viv for these. October share by jo.blackford, on Flickr Celebrating that I managed to do all 4 challenges with the same stamp/stencil/die kit! 5 bonus points if you can use the same supplies from another of my color challenges. 25 more bonus points if you did like I did and used (mostly) the same supplies for all 4 challenges

Great challenge and beautiful cards joblackford. This will be challenging for me...trying to figure out how to use the same dies. 🤔

Great challenge and beautiful cards joblackford . This will be challenging for me...trying to figure out how to use the same dies. 🤔 Ah, that might be hard... but if you can do something inspired by or in the spirit of the challenge it's all good... I'm sorry I made the same supplies bonus so enticing!

joblackford thank you for the black and white on color challenge. Your cards are lovely and I really like how you used the same stamps with so many different feels. My first try was kind of boring, so I admired your idea of an ink background and used an ink sponged background. They're both here to see the evolution.

jjpeapea I like that you are sharing the first and the second cards together. It's interesting to see what a sponged background can do. Definitely brought intrest to the card and now the black&white images pop. Nice job! Love those images.

Great challenge, joblackford ! Thanks for this and for all of your interesting colour challenges this month. So much inspiration!
Love the b&w images against the vibrant inked background on your cards. And this gives me hope I may be able to actually USE some of those stamps I bought cuz I absolutely love the image, but don't use b/c I hate to detail colour (and do a terrible job of shading). I like the fussy cut flowers, but jjpeapea , your stamped images look great just trimmed with a trimmer on that inked tone on tone background.

I'm not a fan of coloring either so I do lots of different things to avoid it - stamping on patterned paper, ink blending roughly over, messy watercoloring, or just leaving the image uncolored... you can always suggest you've left it so the recipient can color it in themselves! I've also realized that less detailed/shaded coloring can be ok, especially on smaller images. The coloring people put so much effort into their coloring and it's awesome, but I don't have the right tools and skills, or the patience...

I love that you shared both versions The sponged background does give a little more zing. I often use patterned paper with a watercolor wash type of feel to give a little more life to simple designs. I wonder if the plain background could've benefited from some matting layers behind the images? I'm glad you enjoyed the color challenges It was fun trying to figure out how to make them interesting and work for most people but using that new kit that I just bought - I always want to try doing more different ideas with the same supplies but I get distracted pretty easily.

joblackford, your examples are vibrant and beautiful. jjpeapea, I appreciated the before and after. I love your stamped images and your ink sponged background. I think I am starting to like the results of my ink blending……and hopefully I am getting better at it, but it is a lot of work!

@jjoblackford, thank you for thinking about my card and the matted background. I did consider that but I wasn't sure I had room. A thin one for sure! Black do you think? Or more green? I tried to ink the edges to at least give a little separation. scrapnnana your ink blending looks great! Did you use a masking for the tickets? The bat bush stamped right on the background is a nice contrast. An excellent card to meet the challenge.

Thank you, jjpeapea. I didn’t do any masking. I just fussy cut the tickets, then glued the border and tickets down after I inked the background. This one was actually pretty easy and fairly fast.

scrapnnana your ink blending is beautiful. I am still trying to use less pressure and sometimes I forget to dab off the extra ink. On my card I used glycerin to get a smother blending and because of it, the seedless preserve distress ink looks more pink than purple. I hope it courts. I used the JOY from my die sentiment . 20211029_072649-01 by Azcrafty, on Flickr

azcrafty perfect for the challenge! And you used the same die, so bonus points. Cute card - we've been there trying to struggle the tree into the house.

Hahaha...we used to have this 8 feet tall fake Christmas tree and it was a struggle to bring it in and put it together. DH always complained about it. So one year a run out and got a 5 feet one. I can easily put it together myself , now he complains that I don't include him in the process. I just can't win 😅

azcrafty , thank you, and your card is great. I love the stamped character, and the fact that the face is hidden by the tree. It definitely got a smile from me. Based on what you said about the inking of your background, I obviously have a lot to learn about shading. Dabbing off extra ink? Using glycerin? I guess I need to watch some tutorials specific to shading with inks. Any recommendations?

I posted a thread here earlier this year with a video about using glycerin - I can find it for you if a quick search doesn't turn it up. There are lots of little tricks to ink blending but using Bristol smooth instead of Neenah seems to help my blending lately. And yes, after putting the ink on the brush/foam you're "supposed to" brush a little off onto the mat or scrap paper so you don't get harsh lines. TBH I almost never do. It feels like a waste, even if you do it on a craft sheet where you can pick up that extra color again. And I'm impatient. Mindy Eggen does lots of ink blending www.youtube.com/c/MindyEggenDesign although I'm not sure if there's a specific video where she shows tips. Jessica Frosty-Ballas also does some great ink blending www.youtube.com/c/JessicaFrostBallas

Seedless Preserves ends up much more pink than purple, but for my challenges I say if you intended to use the challenge colors that's good enough. Just like my sample pink brown and yellow card that didn't end up having much brown at all because my brown ink looked green. Close enough is good enough for me. And this card is really cool! I love that you found a way to use that die again. I knew you would and it turned out to be totally different from your other cards which is even better. I love finding ways to use supplies in unexpected ways. All the points to you!

Blending was done in a minute. Otherwise it takes me longer. The paper I used it was 110lb Michael's cs. Terrible for blending but held up ok with the glycerin. When I'm not lazy...I use Bristol smooth cs and a glass mat and it works beautifully. Start the blending off your paper. This might be helpful its a Mindy video youtu.be/6rQ-h1G1JsE

I really like the grouchy cats from Tim Holtz but struggle coloring them. This may be the way to go.
