I've picked up a few sets of the stainless steel ones for my husband. He was sick of getting coffee in his beard and mustache. I have found them both at our regular grocery store and Aldi, and both sets came with a tiny brush cleaner, but we just throw them in the dishwasher. I think the ones from the grocery store had some silicone nibs for the tops, but he pitched those because he didn't like them.

I have silicone and metal. I prefer the silicone. You can get sets with a cleaning brush in lots of places. Mine are from Grove but I imagine Target, Amazon and Walmart have them.

don't they get hot with hot liquid? If they got hot enough to affect the straw, they they would burn your tongue.

We use silicone or bpa free plastic. They are everywhere here as places aren’t supposed to give them out unless you ask. I worry that the metal ones could be dangerous if someone was walking and drinking. I know it is a ridiculous fear, but we do have kids occasionally using them.

I honestly have not seen any re-useable straws up here. But I don't know if I have actually looked, or know WHERE to look. By the tumblers?

Also...because I'm a klutz...it's more dangerous to have the stainless because if you whack your teeth with it, you could actually chip them vs. whacking them with a plastic or silicone straw.

We got a set of brightly colored silicone ones from Amazon. There are a million options there. I prefer the silicone over the metal.

I thought that was just a myth like razors in apples on Halloween. I’m glad we opted not to buy them then. we rinse them with a brush but then still put them in the dishwasher.

I love Mermaid Straws. She’s keeps everything sustainable and reusable and gives back with every purchase. She has three sizes of straws and also makes silicon tips for them. mermaidstraw.com

I am probably in the minority, but I prefer glass straws. Obviously, I have to be careful with them for breakage oh, but it usually works for me. If I were looking for one to carry out and about with me oh, I would probably go with the hard plastic or stainless steel with a silicone tip. I have seen some that come with a little carrying cases and so forth for those who went to take them to restaurants Etc.

Pampered Chef sells sets of 3 metal ones with a cleaning brush and carry bag for $8.95. We have several sets.

I prefer the re-usable plastic ones. I do have some stainless steel ones with the silicon tips. I haven't figured out why I prefer one over the other, just that I do.

I have a terrible flash of anxiety any time I see people using the metal straws. I just can't seem to shake the feeling that it's really risking a serious injury.

I prefer wider width plastic straws. I do not care for thin straws, barely anything comes through them.
I do NOT like paper straws at all, texture issues. Cannot use the paper straw, had to take the lid off and sip my beverage. I have a bag full of wrapped plastic straws, and I keep one in my purse and some in the trunk of my car, in case I am given a paper straw again.

These are my favorites. I've had a bunch of both metal and silicone straws and I like glass the best. You can see if they're clean - I always use straw brushes and I've still had some gross crap come out out both metal and silicone straws a couple times. I like being able to see there's nothing. They feel better in the mouth to me than either plastic or metal, they aren't affected by temperature, zero flavor retention, and they look nice. They're borosilicate glass, so are sturdy and stand up to routine use. They've been dropped on hard floors or counters without issue. DH and DS both like them best as well.

I’ve seen both metal and BPA free plastic ones available all over the place around me. Everywhere from Target, Tuesday Morning, Home Goods, Michael’s, even the grocery stores here have them in their kitchenware sections.

I can’t stand metal straws and I know for a fact that I’d break a glass straw. I know someone who swallowed a glass chip and ended up with major abdominal surgery, so those freak me out more than metal straws. And paper straws disintegrate before I’m done with a drink. I got these from Amazon. These have a tiny amount of give, but are rigid plastic. They are similar to the straws that come with Starbucks tumblers.

Just throwing it out there - my aesthetician is not a fan of straws. She sees a lot of similar wrinkle patterns to smokers (obviously dependent on skin type and how often you drink from a straw). I am a profuse water drinker and broke my habit of using a straw at her recommendation. I still use them very occasionally, but wouldn't foster the habit personally.

I read about this ages ago and do think there is something to it. I drink water almost exclusively, so use my yeti cup for that. However, if I’m drinking out of a glass I will spill on myself so I use straws then, and prefer the big silicone straws. As for cleaning them, what works best for us is to rinse them out immediately after use with warm/hot water and only then stick them in the dishwasher.

I won't click on the "dirty straws" link posted above because it has a "read at your own risk" warning to it (which I appreciate - thank you). My morning smoothie straw gets rinsed, then soaked in soapy water before going in the DW. Diet Coke straw gets rinsed and put in the DW. I don't use straws for anything else.
