Exactly - 5 cases in Canada to date, and many other countries as well. The horse has already left the barn. I’m not sure how to feel about this. I’m scared and tired, honestly. But I also feel like if it is really bad and evades current vaccines it’s poetic justice of a sort. We richer, mostly western, countries decided to be next level selfish and take up to 3 doses without giving sufficient access to even one dose for poorer countries, despite the WHO’s explicit warnings. We f’ed Africa, and we might be about to get f’ed right back. We didn’t f’ anyone, link. According to the White House fact sheet as of August 3rd we had already sent over 100 million doses to other countries. Both Trump and Biden made use of wartime powers, the Defense Production Act, to compel companies to fulfil US orders of vaccines, vaccine components and syringes before supplying other buyers. In practice this amounted to an embargo on their export. Biden did not lift this or donate any vaccines until US vaccination rates had stagnated. The US also hoarded 60 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine despite them not being approved for use in the US. www.ft.com/content/82fa8fb4-a867-4005-b6c2-a79969139119www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-57039362

There is also a distribution and an uptake problem which isn't the fault of first world countries which snatched up all of the vaccine last winter. Multiple countries in Africa, including South Africa, have declined shipments of vaccine for lots of complicated reasons including lack of proper cold storage and no organized distribution system in remote locations. There has also been a rejection of the J&J shot and the the AZ vaccine in some countries. Plus manufacturing issues in India. And some countries in Africa didn't sign up for Covax. I'm the first person to blame the US for being an asshole in many situations and we definitely played that role in the early days of the vaccine rollout but we also aren't responsible for every single thing that goes badly across the planet. Covid didn't mutate in S. Africa because some greedy Americans got a booster shot before the rest of the world was vaccinated.

The cases in South Africa haven't been severe. NYT reported it yesterday. That isn't to say that it can't kill or that we might have to tweak the vaccines but my thought is not to panic until there is REAL science to back up the worry. News outlets are looking for anything to scare us with.

Covid didn't mutate in S. Africa because some greedy Americans got a booster shot before the rest of the world was vaccinated. I and many others have acknowledged the myriad issues around vaccine uptake, logistics and distribution. No one said that only the US was at fault. I was responding to a post saying that the US was not at fault at all. I provided links showing the US was partly to blame. As for the manufacturing issues in India, India could not get the raw materials required to produce vaccines because of the US's de facto embargo. SA turned away AZ as it was practically useless against the variant that was dominant there at the time. IIRC efficacy was 18%. Just a reminder that just because SA identified the variant does not mean that it arose in South Africa, much like the Spanish Flu was identified in Spain but originated in Kansas. SA does a lot of sequencing, which is why it was picked up. SA was sequencing a greater percentage of positive cases than the US. Only in the last day or so has the CDC committed to sequencing 1 out of 7 positive cases. Countries like the UK and Australia try to sequence 100% of positive cases. As much as you may not want to face up to it, rich countries hoarding vaccines and handing out 3rd doses has meant that poorer countries have gone without, resulting in mutations arising. The WHO and others have been warning the world about the consequences of vaccine inequality since the vaccines became available. News outlets are looking for anything to scare us with. I hope that continues but in reality severe cases often takes a while to develop and also most cases so far have been in younger people. It’ll take 2 or 3 weeks until we have an accurate bigger picture.

Covid didn't mutate in S. Africa because some greedy Americans got a booster shot before the rest of the world was vaccinated. I think everyone has acknowledged the complications and logistics of the vaccine roll out in lower income countries. No, the vaccine didn't mutate in S Africa or whatever country it originated in (S Africa was just the first country to detect it) because greedy people in the US got boosters. More than boosters, a bigger problem is wealthy countries hoarding vaccines. The virus did mutate because 65% of the US and other wealthy countries are vaccinated for Covid vs only 3% in lower income countries. In a video & transcript that I linked earlier, a doctor in England said the omicron variant is the vaccine inequity coming home to roost. Also, the Astra Zeneca vaccine has still not been approved in the US. Can you blame other countries for being reluctant to accept it?

I'm a bit discouraged that vaccinated people can get it (yes, i know that's how it is, but still...)
