The UK has banned flights from several Southern African countries because scientists are very concerned about a new variant because it is much more transmissible and vaccines could be potentially less effective although that isn't really known yet. There have only been 59 identified cases (in SA) so far but there will a delay until we know if it's more dangerous in terms of the seriousness of the illness it causes. Ugh BBC"One expert described the variant, known as B.1.1.529, as "the worst one we've seen so far", and there is concern it has the potential to evade immunity."

Well that's disheartening to hear. I hope that it's not as bad as they think.

Yeh just heard that. Very worrying especially when the scientist are beginning to have doubts on how it will be affecting the efficacy of the vaccine. I’m glad that they are not taking risks here and putting the travel ban in place so quickly though.

I hope the U.S. Is also blocking flights. I really hope it isn't skirting the immunity we've already managed to get.

I suppose they learn by their past mistakes. They were a little late in acting when the Delta appeared in India IMO or strict enough with the quarantine rules allowing some to do so at home. Think it’s been found in Hong Kong too according to some reports. Someone who had recently returned from South Africa.

Yes I saw HK mentioned too. Covid: New heavily mutated variant B.1.1.529 in South Africa raises concern www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-59418127Further report. Frankly I’m unsettled… although UK case numbers are quite high hospitalisations and deaths are low, we’re boosted (Dh and I) and I was feeling cautiously optimistic. This makes me fear we’ll go back to square one 😟 I hope they’re over reacting. I don’t want all that fear and worry again.

As soon as it seems we’re on the road out it’s bang, something else comes along. I long for the day that I don’t have to “ think” of the consequences of everything we do.

Oh joy, NOT!!,. Although I did my booster the other day! That is what they are very concerned about. This variant has 30 mutations, twice as many as the Delta. What is causing them great concern is that this one B.1.1.529 has a spike protein that is dramatically different to the original strain which was the basis for the vaccines. It was just fortunate that the Delto didn’t have a different spike. it is still early days yet and not enough data is in to say for sure so we will just have to hope.

You know what would have been cool? For everyone to do their part and get vaccinated as soon as it was their turn. More vaccinated means variants cant take hold.

Then I googled and saw that Australia currently has no plans to blocks flights from SA yet. Grrrrrrr! South Africa's vaccination rate is only about 24%.

I hope we learn and put preemptive action into place!! Quickly!
No shame in taking precautions early while scientists are scrambling to figure out some things with this variant.

Yesterday, late afternoon, Morocco closed it's borders to France as Covid is on the rise in Europe. I believe there is already a ban from the UK, maybe even Germany too.
The border closing to France is a pretty big deal as there are lots and lots of French-Moroccans living in both countries. It's a popular flight.
They are pretty strict here still about Covid as it relates to the Vaccine Pass, which you must show to get into almost anywhere. Masks are still required everywhere.
My friend's parents flew in just yesterday from Colombia...from France actually. They told her that after they got off the plane and were walking through the airport, random people were being tested for on-the-spot Covid testing.
If you test positive, you will be denied entry into the country. I "think" you most be fully vaccinated AND have a current PCR test (72 hrs) showing negative to enter.

Scary. I hope it isn’t as bad as they fear as I just don’t see a real lockdown to prevent spread. I wish we would stop flights from SA and HK and from where else?

Of course but sadly many poorer countries just don't have the opportunity to offer it to their entire population yet. Whereas most richer countries have those who won't be team players and don't look at the bigger picture. As has been said many times - no one is safe until we're all safe.

The ban also includes, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini. The total ban on flights from these countries will be in place until Monday until such time as quarantine arrangements are put in place. We should make the distinction and refer to it as countries in Southern Africa rather than South Africa which is a country in its own right.

There are specific entry requirements in much the same way as we have in place for most countries - test before you go, fully vaccinated, tests on arrival etc etc but as far as I know there isn't a total ban on travellers to Morocco from the UK.

For everyone to have access to the vaccines instead of some countries being on boosters #3 and #4 and looking down on the rest of the world that still can't get the first ones.

But even then, with poorer countries still not having a vaccine the problem isn't solved. The rich countries really need to do better.

One article I was reading talked about this new variant and how Aids is affecting its mutation.
Will be interesting to follow the research and see if this virus is now using other medical conditions to mutate itself and become more powerful.
That is scary.

They've now detected a case in Belgium that has no link to the African countries. LINK
