How can the president “defund” state/local police departments? We’ve got about fifteen layers of law enforcement here in Texas, and other than Border Patrol and the FBI field offices, I don’t think Biden has control over any of them.

I'm not trying to change the subject. I'm backing up my points with actual facts. And no, you didn't answer the question. You pointed to a lot of things that you think are contributing to gun violence. But none of those are actions that President Biden did or did not do. I pointed to something he actually did - he increased funding to police. He increased funding to the police because HIS ADMINISTRATION defunded the police and they got their tit in a wringer because the large democratic cities crime rates WENT UP!!!! Simple logic. The majority of the funding for police come from the city or county depending what type of police force they are. Additional funding comes from the states. The Federal money is in the form of grants an individual police department can apply for. What President Biden did was make those grants available for additional police training. Which I personally think is a good idea. If you check you will find that President Biden said he did not support defunding the police but did support additional training for police officers. The grants available to police departments reflect that. Here is what the Feds are doing…. link“Funding for COPS has increased in the last four fiscal years, from $276 million for FY2018 to $386 million for FY2021. Increased funding for the COPS account is the result of Congress increasing funding for hiring programs, and for anti-heroin task forces, active shooter training, and grants under the Matching Grant Program for School Security. Also, for FY2021, funding was provided for programs to promote policing reform efforts, such as funding for de-escalation training, improving law enforcement’s response to people with mental health problems, helping law enforcement agencies gain accreditation, and anti-bias and diversity training.”

Oh geez, I must have misspoke.🙄🙄🙄 The left was screaming for defund the police. Is that broad enough for you? Stop acting like you don’t know what I’m referring to. Scrolling up a bit, it’s clear what Fox/Newsmax/OANN have been playing on repeat today to shield their viewers from the tweets to Mark Meadows being read at the congressional hearings.

But … the police here in my big bad blue city run by Democrats have only had their budget increased. So no, I don’t know what you’re talking about. You seem to misunderstand the difference between local, state, and federal control. ETA: Here's an article from the summer detailing the $30M increase to HPD's budget this year despite city revenue shortfalls due to Covid. You know where the evil, socialist, Democratic mayor and city council of Houston got the money to make that happen? Federal relief from ... you guessed it ... the Biden administration. www.houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/politics/2021/06/02/399679/houston-passes-5-1-billion-annual-budget-using-federal-aid-to-plug-deficit/(You see, unlike the GOP, Democrats don't enact policy based on what their fringe shouts at protests.)

Here's a kicker. I don't have 2021 data, but for 2019, 7 out of the 10 states with the highest crime rates are red. The glaring exception would be DC. There's loads of data to support the facts.
I did see on twitter more recent numbers with regard to gun violence in 2020 and red states also had a higher increase in crime.
But it's Biden's fault? That dog don't hunt.
Editing to add that a lot of the increases we're seeing are domestic violence. This is why I support laws that keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers. In my state, it's a panel of police that are supposed to review cases for gun removal of known domestic abusers and many refuse to take the common sense measure of removing guns from these people (almost exclusively men) because 'muh guns' and '2nd amendment'. It would also make sense to enact measures for the safe and secure storage of weapons in the home. Unsecure weapon used in a shooting whether accidental or intentional? There should be consequences. These measures don't cost us more money and they also don't remove funding from law enforcement. They are simple, common sense measures that the GOP stonewalls.
Also I don't recall gas as low as Cindosha has been quoting since before GWB unless it was a short lived fluke.

Here are some actual facts about defunding the police that Fox won't tell you. www.brookings.edu/blog/how-we-rise/2021/05/19/7-myths-about-defunding-the-police-debunked/Crime is on the rise across the country, in Republican states and cities as well as Democrat led ones. Cities that increased funding to police also saw an increase in crime. Looking at actual statistics, it's difficult to show a direct link between cities that reduced funding and increased crime. Your "logic" does not hold up when you look at actual facts. Austin, Texas reduced and shifted funding from the police but there's very little proof that directly resulted in increased crime. For a city of that size, Austins rates are relatively low compared to other cities the same size. www.kxan.com/investigations/homicides-on-the-rise-how-austin-compares-to-other-big-cities/www.forbes.com/sites/nicholasreimann/2020/12/18/feds-blame-austin-crime-spike-on-defunding-police-but-evidence-remains-murky/?sh=5d60300879a9www.statesman.com/story/news/politics/politifact/2021/06/14/austin-homicides-rise-little-proof-its-tied-police-defunding/7654403002/In reality, very few cities actually reduced funding to the police. Those that did, reduced funding in 2020 when Trump was still in office. Does that make him responsible? Out of the $100 billion spent on police budgets, they were only reduced by $840 million. Those cities that cut funding did so in response to covid and drops in revenue, not just the black lives matter protests. 26 cities actually increased budgets. www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2021-city-budget-police-funding/www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/mar/07/us-cities-defund-police-transferring-money-communitywww.politico.com/news/2021/10/14/democrats-suburbs-lets-fund-the-police-515966As a matter of policy, the issue has proven to be a nonstarter — hardly any cities or suburbs actually defunded police departments in a significant way in the year since the police killing of George Floyd sparked the movement. But in political terms, the issue that has come to be known simply as "defund" is a staple of Republican attacks anyway.I think it's also important to point out that cites increased funding not only in response to increased crime, but also as a result of the departure of officers and political pressure. www.nytimes.com/2021/10/10/us/dallas-police-defund.htmlThe abrupt reversals have come in response to rising levels of crime in major cities last year, the exodus of officers from departments large and small and political pressures. After slashing police spending last year, Austin restored the department’s budget and raised it to new heights. In Burlington, Vt., the city that Senator Bernie Sanders once led as mayor went from cutting its police budget to approving $10,000 bonuses for officers to stay on the job.The abrupt reversals have come in response to rising levels of crime in major cities last year, the exodus of officers from departments large and small and political pressures. Can you explain the increase in crime in major cities including smash and grabs??? Gee, maybe it has something to do with increased poverty and mental illness during the pandemic as people lost their jobs and became desperate? Crime rose even in cities that suffered no loss of police funding or even had an increase. From your angle, how do you explain that?

What does defund the police mean to you Cindosha and where did this occur? Can you share this information so a discussion about some facts can happen? Can you explain the increase in crime in major cities including smash and grabs??? This might surprise you. www.newsweek.com/despite-rise-smash-grabs-these-major-cities-saw-robberies-drop-2021-1658418Some of the U.S. cities that have been impacted by the recent spike in smash-and-grab retail robberies have reported an overall decline in robberies citywide compared with those reported last year.Seriously, the increase in crime is not as simple as Republicans and Fox who like to blame reduced funding for the police. The problem is a lot more complicated. Look at any news source other than Fox and far right ones and you might figure out some of the reasons. A lot of the reasons have already been pointed out to you, but maybe you didn't read the posts. Trying one last time The obvious answer - crimes are up in part because of the holidays. Stores have more stock which means it's easier and more convenient to steal. Stolen goods can be easily resold on facebook marketplace, eBay, postmark etc as well as more traditional places like pawn shops, street vendors, flea markets etc. The increase in crime before the holidays is not new. The groups behind it are just more organized and are using technology to help them - recruiting on social media, selling the stolen goods online etc. www.npr.org/2021/12/07/1062016956/how-online-markets-may-be-contributing-to-organized-retail-crimeAnother reason - low risk, high incentive www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/11/30/perverse-incentives-behind-smash-and-grab-wave/Stolen-goods rackets aren’t new — decades ago, gangsters dealt in merchandise that “fell off a truck." Like those old-time crooks, today’s seek goods that are both relatively small — easy to carry and store — and relatively lucrative. Most of the year, ORC traffics in men’s razors, teeth-whitening strips and, of all things, baby formula. At Christmas, they shift to higher-end gift items such as Louis Vuitton bags, fragrances and electronics. “Not only are the stores stocked up for Black Friday,” Tony Sheppard, a 27-year veteran of retail industry anti-theft efforts, told me, “but also the person reselling the stuff is prepping for the holiday season.” According to Sheppard, who now works for ThinkLP, a retail loss-prevention company, the new element is technology, which has enabled organized criminals to recruit and pay mobs — and resell stolen goods — via the Internet. And when brick-and-mortar stores closed during the pandemic, millions of shoppers shifted to online. This boosted the legitimate online marketplace, but created new demand for stolen goods in cyberspace, too. Between the perception that perpetrators would not be harshly punished, and new possibilities to sell online, there were the makings of a “perfect storm” for ORC this Christmas season, Sheppard argues: “It’s considered a low-risk, high reward crime.” More than two-thirds of retailers said the pandemic increased overall risk for their organization, according to the National Retail Federation’s 2021 National Retail Security Survey, and 57 percent reported a rise in ORC. Theft of all kinds cost retailers $68 billion in 2019, admittedly a small percentage of the $4 trillion-plus in sales, but enough to make it worthwhile for a growing number of companies to conduct their own clandestine surveillance of ORC rings, according to Sheppard. They turn videos and other information over to law enforcement.Legislation now pending in Congress could help, by requiring online marketplaces to gather and verify seller information. The bill was tied up in wrangling over details between Amazon and its competitors but the company has recently said it supports a potential compromise. (The Post’s owner, Jeff Bezos, is founder of Amazon.) At the root of the smash-and-grab epidemic lies that old social-science truism: incentives influence behavior. For now, perverse incentives prevail and, unless and until they’re corrected, so will perverse behavior. This is also worth noting www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/11/30/perverse-incentives-behind-smash-and-grab-wave/Donald Trump issued this statement Tuesday: “If Democrats don’t immediately stop smash-and-grab robberies, which are taking place in their cities, the National Guard must be called out.” If only he had demonstrated the same urgency when he was president and his own supporters smashed and grabbed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.Where was the party of law and order during the insurrection on Jan 6? And forget back the blue, the Trump supporting insurrectionists were chanting f*& the blue. Republicans like to whitewash that history but the very same politicians who are pointing fingers at Democratic mayors and Biden are the same ones who have not supported the Capitol Police officers after the insurrection.

And Nate Silver is full of crap. Just in general. I use to follow him & FiveThrityEight and posted a lot of their stuff on this board. But I have come to see Silver as someone who is full of himself and dumped him. Anyway, you don’t need a fancy “algorithm” to see and understand the type of press both President Biden & VP Harris are getting from mainstream media. President Obama also suffered from negative press over nothing as well. There is nothing wrong with honest criticism. But right now the majority of “criticism” both President Biden & VP Harris are receiving from mainstream media is anything but honest. Especially the headlines or talking points. Headlines & talking points that often leave out key points that tell the whole story. Unfortunately we have a “headline/talking point” only populous who just read & believe the headlines or talking points instead of reading/listening to the whole story. You seem really stuck on Biden & Harris's admittedly low poll numbers. But, I don't recall you or any other Republican ever mentioning Trump's historically low numbers. Republicans didn't seem to care that his approval numbers were never above 50, except if it might hurt them in their own re-election bids. Republicans have one set of rules, one set of strategies when they're in power but play by an entirely different set of rules when they're in the minority.

After the reveals this week of tweets from Fox personalities to Mark Meadows, I could care less what any of them think about VP Harris. No one else should either. I really don't care why Tucker Carlson thinks she's incompetent. It doesn't matter if its because of her interior decorating skills, gossip from unnamed sources in a CNN article, blue tooth headphones, or a $300 pot etc. The Fox entertainers have targeted her since the 2020 primary. They see her as a credible threat in 2024 and are on a mission to smear her whenever possible. To add insult to injury, some of the attacks, I'm sure are racially motivated and misogynistic. I know they're dangerous, they showed just how dangerous this week with their revealing tweets. They knew exactly who was behind the Jan 6 insurrection, they tweeted the one person they thought could influence Trump to intervene. But, just hours after the insurrection, after many Americans watched it unfold on live TV, they went on the air and lied about Antifa's involvement. And they continue to repeat that lie and many others about the insurrection. They have repeated countless crazy conspiracy theories around the election and the insurrection. Tucker's show about the insurrection was pure propaganda. Fox lost whatever remaining credibility and integrity they had when Chris Wallace left. They should be stripped of the word news from their name.
