The last couple of weeks have been really bad, but I think last night was the worst, 6 or 7 shows canceled, one of which canceled 10 minutes after it was supposed to start with patrons already in their seats. There are Covid protocols for testing all theatre staff, but clearly they are not able to keep up with this variant. Looks like even more shows than that will be canceled this evening.
The Broadway (and larger NYC and worldwide performing arts community) was decimated by the first shut down. I don’t know if they can take something like that again, but something is going to have to be done to get perfomers and other theatre staff tested earlier in the day to get results back far before curtain. People aren’t going to travel to NY and buy theatre tickets if this keeps up. I know I would have been so sad had this happened when I was out this time last month.
Also, apparently The West End had an even dozen shows cancel this evening.
Buckle up friends, this is going to be a bumpy ride.

My sister and her family were supposed to see Hamilton tonight. She got notice yesterday afternoon that it was canceled. This will be the 3rd time it's been postponed for them. Luckily they live in CT and can take a train in, but I feel for everyone who travels long distance that can't change their plans at the last second. First world probably for sis and family but knowing how massively they've been looking forward to the show, they're really upset.

My mom told me about this. It scares her, just when she was feeling a LITTLE confident. Darn!!
DD & I got our boosters and we're waiting to see if we need other vaccines for this variant. For now we're doing our usual protocol. We were being SUPER careful because DH's immune system was so terrible. When he passed (3 weeks ago), we thought that we could cut back a bit but now we're still being very careful!
I feel so badly for (my) NY. Darn!!!!! I hope they'll get a grip on this and get back to their new normal again! It scares me because my family was hesitant to come to FL and now DD and I are hesitant to see them if they're possibly carrying any variant.
Third year and this is still continuing to go on. Incredible!!!

Rumor has it that Hamilton currently has 19 cast members who are Covid+. Knowing that, one has to wonder how many patrons are as well and don’t know it. They may well have dodged a bullet by not sitting in that theatre this evening :/

And particularly (as you said) for folks who planned a trip to NYC. I have friends in NYC theater careers who have already been hit hard and were out of work for months. This could be a career ender for them.

So many domino effects from this that often aren't even realized. I feel badly for everyone affected.

This is so sad. We were there a month ago and saw Hadestown (which is AMAZING), and the cast was so happy to be back they were nearly in tears. Theater is so much more than a job for those folks. 😢

Not surprised at all. They had over 30 cast members who are positive. 😞

I want to add that that Radio City Music Hall does not have the masking and other requirements that the Broadway houses do. And as of a matter of fact, they do not require masking indoors for their patrons or their staff. The handwriting was on the wall for them with Omicron 😞

Unfortunately, they make an announcement that “masks are optional” and it’s a HUGE theater. Granted, you have to be vaccinated to get but there’s no spacing of seats. I kept my mask on. 😬

No way would I go into a crowded theatre unmasked. Don't tell DD, but when she said she was due close to Christmas, I was a little cranky we'd miss NYC again since we had to skip last year. LOL

“The cancellations comes as COVID-19 cases rise throughout New York. On Friday, the state reported 21,027 new positive cases, marking the highest level on record since the start of the pandemic — though testing was not widely available in early 2020. New York City made up 10,286 of those positive cases.”

That is so hard to hear. We had so much fun at SIX and Hadestown the last weekend in October. The Broadway shows both required masks and everyone wore them. It looks like it will be another tough winter.

London West End are closing one after the other at the moment. So disappointing for so many, especially when some are only told as they are waiting to take their seats in some instances. They do re-open sometime the next day depending on how many are infected.
They have strict protocols for all the cast and backstage/musicians/FOH but they still get caught out. It's very difficult for them to operate if some of their cast, especially the leads, are not able to perform. There's only so many understudies you can have and in such a close working environment it does have the potential to spread.

I’m due to see Les Miserables in Glasgow tomorrow night, and at this moment, I really hope they cancel it. I am so conflicted about going. The tickets were really expensive and I hate just to forfeit so much money, but I’m also high risk, and want covid even less. I was also meant to be going with the friend who dumped me last month, so I’m not even sure if I’m up for it emotionally. My DS said he would come with me, but that would just be doubling our exposure!

I know in my city Hadestown requires extensive testing of anyone involved with the production.
That’s unfortunate about Radio City Music Hall not enforcing masks.

So sad. We are going next week. Meeting our DD and her DH who live in another state and our son who lives in NYC. We had tickets to the Rockettes for Christmas day (her dream) and tickets to Six and Hadestown. We are so disappointed. Holding out hope that our Broadway shows don't have to cancel. We have several other tickets for a variety of experiences. I was so excited to do this for them all for Christmas and have been planning it since this summer. DD and I had to cancel our once in a lifetime trip to Germany in March of 2020 and now I'm worried about the rest of this trip. And I feel so awful for all the people involved in the performances.

It is incredibly frustrating. I had thought originally about going this week, but had been traveling all fall and frankly was just tired. Now I am thankful I didn’t buy tickets, but so sad for all of the people involved with the shows.

DH and I were in NYC Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday night had dinner with a college friend, and walked around outside masked. Restaurants also required ID and proof of vaccination in NYC. People we saw on the subway kept masked. Wednesday we saw To Kill a Mockingbird and The Lehman Trilogy. The ushers were vigilant about enforcing masks on as long as the lights were on before show and intermission, saying “we want to keep Broadway open”. We did walk past on the other side of the street past an urgent care center and saw a line out the door. I feel for the sick performers, and those disappointed by the cancelled performances.

We’re supposed to see Mockingbird and Billy Joel in February. I’m getting stressed out thinking about it. I live on the west coast, so can’t easily see a rescheduled show. Ugh!

We’ve been planning NYC for Christmas since summer. We have tickets to The Nutcracker. For some reason I couldn’t decide on other shows and figured we’d pick up whatever we could find when we got there. Maybe that was a good decision at this point.
We watched On Pointe on Disney+ (A year in the life of students in the School of American Ballet in NYC - from 2020. The show ended with the school closing and students going home because of COVID. It showed the preparation for the Nutcracker at Lincoln Center and we are really looking forward to seeing it.)

Total aside, but thanks for mentioning the show - we know a few kids who were there at the time, so need to watch! I hope your trip is smoother than it seems right now!

We rescheduled our October trip to NY after my dd got Covid. We rebooked for February and now I'm wondering if I'm going to regret it. My DH has never been and never seen a show on Broadway and we have tickets to see Hadestown and Lion King. Hoping things will settle down quickly so they can all get back to making theatre.
