Another thread got me thinking about random icons. For those of you like myself who have been scrapping for 20 years, what icons and embellishments do you remember?
When I first started chandeliers were the rage. Then owls and birdcages. My old pages reflect those trends. I never found a use for the mustache phase. I have no idea how that became a thing. What other icon periods do you remember?
Also, what products were popular back in the day that you seldom see today?
I miss Hamby products. I loved the clear plastic sheets with cool designs on them. They also had neat rub-ons and screen printed papers. It seemed really cool and hip to my younger self. Buttons used to be everywhere. I still use buttons on pages but I don't see that much anymore. I remember Junkitz actually sold zippers to use on pages. That seemed to be reaching. Unfinished chipboard used to be everywhere. I had a ton of it but then I realized I was too lazy to cover them with paper or do other fancy finishes. Most of the time I either used it raw or painted it. And then there were the eyelet days. So much pounding. I have a few of those left, too. I think I'll try using it on a page this week if I can find my hammer. I feel like digging out the really old stuff and challenge myself to use it.

Cupcakes, butterflies, donuts, owls, lamps/furniture, chandeliers, potty people. I've been paper crafting since 2007, so not quite 20 years. My first CHA was in 2010 (I believe) and the Hambly booth was one of my favorites. I still remember it to this day!

Not product but technique - cutting your photos into circles or squares with rounded corners and backing them with the same shape just slightly larger. Remember the templates for doing that?
Products - metal words/letters/blocks/circles, those cute boy/girl cutouts, Jolee's stickers and layered stickers, big foam letter stamps that we use acrylic paint with, Quickutz dies on a layout or card, tear bears, Basic Grey...

artbabe - I went to Hambly's closeout sale (I only live 5 miles from where the office used to be) and bought a ton of transparencies. I still use them in projects, although I'm getting burnt out on using this red one. If you want a couple, I can cut them down to 6x6 and send you some.

Not a typo. It’s what the generic man and woman shapes were called because they looked like the icons you’d see on public bathrooms. Like the wood veneer in this kit - you can still get them! aliedwards.com/shop/my-story-starter-kit

I used to LOVE mulberry paper back in the day... I'd wet the edges to make it kind of fuzzy and mat photos with it. I still like the look but it is definitely dated, like 90's dated.
When I FIRST started scrapbooking, those little cartoony ducks were popular. I can't remember the name of them but man, I slapped them on EVERYTHING! So glad I quickly got tired of them (or realized there were other embellishments that were better). My poor daughter's first year album in the early 90's have w-a-y too many of those little ducks!

I remember coming back to scrapping after a long break and seeing that washi was everywhere and I didn't get it. I have less than 10 rolls. I just tend not to use it very often. Chevrons were everywhere for a while there, too. This isn't an icon but does anyone remember rounding all the paper corners in the early aughts? Or bottle caps and other metal embellishments that are now probably hanging out at the bottom of a lot of page protectors? Also, birdcages and prima flowers. I had a bunch of milk bottles of them.

Deer were also hugely popular for a while, and I think sassafrass did them better than anyone.
I've had lots of these in my stash and my pages over the years.

When I look back at my early pages, almost everything was a pastel or at least a lightened version of every color.
I don't remember the elephant dung paper, but I do remember buying wire frames with beads that were from Africa. I had so many of them.
Mrs. Grossman stickers were everywhere as well as papers that were color blocked.

Awww, we had two bucks in our yard today having a shoving match with their antlers. It was really quite adorable since they didn't seem to be in full rutting mode. We got a great video of it.

When I FIRST started scrapbooking, those little cartoony ducks were popular. I can't remember the name of them but man, I slapped them on EVERYTHING! It wasn't Suzy's Zoo was it? They were some of the first products that I remember (I do have some stickers in my fist album) and Mary Engelbreit cherry print was always around, the other big products were the paper piecing dolls and Mrs Grossman stickers. I bought a LOT of mulberry paper and handmade paper back when I first started scrapbooking, some of it had weird things in the paper and some had embossed gold or silver designs and they were often stupid expensive per sheet and I never used them much. Junkitz had some weird products on the market, some great ones but yeah zippers on a layout was such a strange one for me. I was another that loved Hambly, that era of chandeliers, cupcakes, owls and deers is a really fond time for me in this hobby. I still have a massive stash of the Hambly transparencies but I do have plans to start using them. The one early trend that I could never get behind was the paper that had a hand painted scene on it, think a table of grapes and wine in front of a window at a vineyard or three teddy bears in one corner. Photo realistic paper too, I could never figure out to use either of those.

I still love buttons and don’t use them often enough. I remember using staples and minim staplers. I think they are called mini-fasteners now. I also remember using K&Co products and many QVC kits. I think Anna Griffin had a lot of products back in the day on QVC (and now on HSN!).

This isn't that old (comparatively), but I remember how chevrons were just THE rage in maybe 2010ish? Not just in scrapbooking, in everything (fashion, home decor, etc). At the time, it seemed so fresh and classic, like you couldn't go wrong with it (like stripes), but then they were EVERYWHERE and when I see them now, I just think how dated they are!
Regarding Making Memories metal embellishments, I have a funny(ish) story to tell. I worked for a LSS for a while and they had this display from Making Memories with individual metal letter charms. The display was basically a piece of wood with nails in it and the letter charms were a very thin metal with a hole on top. At the time I started working for the LSS, I remember thinking even then that no one would buy them. Finally, they got marked down to something crazy, like 5 cents, and still no one wanted to buy them! But the thing that drove me crazy was that once they were back in the clearance section, they were right below an air vent and every time the air came on, it would blow several charms off the display and onto the floor, so we were constantly having to pick them up and hang them again. I think the owners wasted way more money in labor from us picking up those damn charms than if they had just thrown them away!

Oh, another big trend was 12x12 paper that was shaped. I think it was Making Memories that started the trend and was the biggest brand to keep doing it, although some other brands (Creative Expressions, the OG Pink Paislee?) joined in too. Usually the paper was either scalloped on all edges or cut into some sort of label shape. I remember at the time I wanted a large AccuCut machine (with a 12" opening) sooooo bad so I could DIY the trend. Of course, those machines AND dies were huge, heavy and hella expensive, so I never did that. And that was before even the Silhouette offered the Cameo (before their max cutting width was 8.5" I think), so an AccuCut was the only option I think.

Foam stamps from Heidi Swapp , MM, Scrapworks and Lil Davis were all the rage for awhile. Back when I first started the hot off the press paper that was photo realistic was just about we could get. Everything was so very themed and specific.
The paoerkins paper dolls.
The plastic templates that made the layouts for you, you cut the photo into the same size rectangles as the template, I don’t remember what they were called and I know I am not explaining it well, does anyone know what I am talking about?

I do NOT miss the early oughts when it comes to scrapping. Drab colors, mostly cardstock pages. That’s what I remember because for me it truly was SCRAP booking as I didn’t have a lot of money so I had to use every scrap.
The badly shaped photos, had to be matted, floating stickers. Nope. Don’t miss it at all.

I remember wanting those letter charms and then a friend gave me a few full sets. And I realized how stupid they looked on my pages. Just random letters made out of metal for mo reason whatsoever. Lol

Wow. I certainly had fibers- I don't know what I did with them. I have a plastic container with bunches of embroidery floss wrapped around cards. I bet I wrapped the fibers around them. Off to look... Maybe I'll use fiber today. I'm in the mood for a challenge.
I love Making Memories metal. I still use it. I know it dates your page but it is just so cool. I loved the little words and phrases. The metal photo corners were neat, too. I also have a lot of brads with letters on them. I have them all sorted by letters in a plastic container. I need to dig those out, too. I loved KI embellishments. The acrylic tags and words were so cute. They also had transparent shapes and letters in all kinds of colors. So pretty. Doodlebug also had acrylic tags and shapes. KI had the Elsie lines. I loved those. Those lines also seemed so young and hip- much different than all of the vintage and floral that was happening at the time. I still have a bunch of it I need to use.
I remember when the paper flowers were everywhere. For a year or two I don't think you ever saw a page without them. I bought a bunch because they were pretty but I scrapbook mostly boys so I had to find clever ways to use them that didn't make the pages look too foo-foo.
I remember everyone was buying the Making Memories paints and it puzzled me. You can get little containers of acrylic paint for a buck- I don't know why everyone was paying so much for paint.
This is fun. What other things do you remember?
