This isn't that old (comparatively), but I remember how chevrons were just THE rage in maybe 2010ish? Not just in scrapbooking, in everything (fashion, home decor, etc). At the time, it seemed so fresh and classic, like you couldn't go wrong with it (like stripes), but then they were EVERYWHERE and when I see them now, I just think how dated they are! Regarding Making Memories metal embellishments, I have a funny(ish) story to tell. I worked for a LSS for a while and they had this display from Making Memories with individual metal letter charms. The display was basically a piece of wood with nails in it and the letter charms were a very thin metal with a hole on top. At the time I started working for the LSS, I remember thinking even then that no one would buy them. Finally, they got marked down to something crazy, like 5 cents, and still no one wanted to buy them! But the thing that drove me crazy was that once they were back in the clearance section, they were right below an air vent and every time the air came on, it would blow several charms off the display and onto the floor, so we were constantly having to pick them up and hang them again. I think the owners wasted way more money in labor from us picking up those damn charms than if they had just thrown them away! I remember wanting those letter charms and then a friend gave me a few full sets. And I realized how stupid they looked on my pages. Just random letters made out of metal for mo reason whatsoever. Lol Lol! I mean, I think they could have been nice for something like jewelry...didn't really make sense for scrapbooking imo.

My first scrapbook (I think it was a gift) around 2004 was a Susan Branch 8.5 by 11 baby album. The pages (thin like printer paper not cardstock) all had borders so there was barely any room for the photos.

The plastic templates that made the layouts for you, you cut the photo into the same size rectangles as the template, I don’t remember what they were called and I know I am not explaining it well, does anyone know what I am talking about? Maybe the Coluzzle? It came to me last night, it was called Pages By Design. I never actually used them and maybe it was the people at the crops I went to but they LOVED them.

How about the stick figure people and animals stickers from Me and My Big Ideas, and as someone mentioned above, the Paperkins paper dolls in all kinds of themes/professions.

I've been scrapbooking since 1997 and I am a self-proclaimed scrapbook supplies hoarder. Not only do I remember almost everything mentioned so far in this thread, but I also still own most of what's been mentioned!
A few months ago I decided to totally reorganize my scrapbooking supplies mostly by color, which is how I realized I search for supplies when I'm working on a layout (why it took me 24 years to realize that I don't know!) I found Making Memories rub-on letters; the MM metal letters, metal corners and metal words; MM metal page borders; tons of photorealistic paper; cases and cases of fiber; more eyelets that I care to admit that I own; brads in every color of the rainbow; paper dolls; mini-file folders. Sorting my paper I realized I had a 12 inch tall pile of Basic Grey papers I haven't used (saving them for "just the right layout"); Rusty Pickle papers; lots of MM papers; Daisy D's papers; Doodlebug Design papers; a 12 inch tall pile of SEI papers; and the list goes on. I discovered an entire PSB (Paper Sticker Binder) full of all kinds of stickers - those I gave to my daughter for my grandkids to use. I have a dozen or so Hambly transparencies and lots of other transparencies; and entire drawer full of rub-on letters and designs; enough unfinished chipboard to pave my way around the world and dozens of ready-to-finish mini-chipboard albums in varying shapes.
I had good intentions of using all of those supplies when I bought them, but life with two growing children and their activities and full time work got in the way. Now that they kids are grown and on their own I finally have time to scrapbook more and I've challenged myself to use those older supplies. It's been kind of fun to rediscover them!

When I FIRST started scrapbooking, those little cartoony ducks were popular. I can't remember the name of them but man, I slapped them on EVERYTHING! It wasn't Suzy's Zoo was it? ... Yes, that's it! It was Suzy's Zoo and I thought they were the bomb... puked those stickers all over my pages!!! LOL

Colored chalk- I used to chalk the edges of every element on my layout. I used those tiny round cotton balls and that pink “roach clip” as the applicator. I think I got rid of my chalks but I’m not 100% sure.

Creating Keepsakes, Memory Makers, Ivy Cottage, Simple scrapbooks(?) and any other scrapbook magazines!!
I miss them so much.
Those magazines and 2peas were the main forms of media for inspiration and industry happenings.

When I first started, cutting photos into shapes were all the rage. Stickers like Mrs. Grossman's were used generously. I owned quite a few alphabet templates that I would trace and cut out for pages. I would buy paper die cuts from the scrapbook store because I could not justify buying a diecut machine. I remember my mom having one of those markers that had a bulb at the end and it sprayed on the paper. Years later, Tim Holtz came out with one. There were no 12x12 papers, only 8.5x11 papers in the first scrapbook store I visited. I never did get into CM. It wasn't a big thing in my area. I think I only bought one packet of stickers.
Punches! I still love them for basic shapes, but oh how I wanted the paperkin punches SOOO bad! I eventually bought the series of templates they had because it was a lot cheaper. I haven't got rid of any of my little EK Success Paper Shapers. Probably nostalgia, but they don't take up that much room. Besides, where am I going to find a tiny Idaho punch again?
I remember these books by D.J. inkers, I think? You would have to go to the local photocopy place, copy the black and white clip art, color it in, cut it out and add to your page. I honestly don't know what my issue is with getting pages down NOW it's so much easier!

Also, birdcages and prima flowers. I had a bunch of milk bottles of them. I loved that size and I still use them on occasion. I didn't buy too many of them though.
I love Making Memories metal. I still use it. I know it dates your page but it is just so cool. I loved the little words and phrases. The metal photo corners were neat, too. I don't think it does! I mean if it's full of Making Memories metal and that same style from years ago, maybe. I love mixing the old with the new. I also still like using brads. I just put a sticker on the other side of the paper covering the metal just in case there might be a rust problem, but I live in a very dry climate.
How about the stick figure people and animals stickers from Me and My Big Ideas I still have a few of the clear border stickers from Me and My Big Ideas. I loved those things!
I think I got rid of my chalks but I’m not 100% sure. I still have mine and they've barely been used, but I'm glad I've held onto them. I think they are the Ink a Do brand or something like that? I don't think they exist anymore.
Another one I thought of, ribbon! I want to use it more in my scrapping.

That is bizarre. Does anyone need a grid to cut papers/photos into 4x6" and 3x4" sizes? Photos come in those sizes. I remember the old ones and they had much more complicated and differently sized designs. The new ones are lame. I thought of another icon stage- hot air balloons. I never had a use for one and they still sneak into collections now and then. I remember the chalks. I used to chalk all the edges. Then that was replaced by ink. Does anyone still ink their edges? I like the look but I've forgotten to do that lately. Mulberry paper and torn edges were the rage when I started. I'm sure I have some mulberry paper somewhere too. I can't believe there are so many things I've forgotten. I need to dig stuff out and use them. I have some old pages with mulberry paper that I really liked. I used to do a lot of hand sewing on those pages, too. I loved the look- I think I'm getting lazy in my old age. I have a layout of a Cub's game where I hand sewed the baseball red stitching on the page. It looked so cute. I also hand sewed a spider web for a baby Itsy Bitsy Spider page. Wow. I used to be a lot more crafty. I remember the bottlecap phase but I never used one. Then for awhile, after the fiber stage, came the ribbon stage. I still have tons of ribbon. I really need to start using it- I feel like my old layouts had so much more texture. I miss Basic Grey like crazy. I just really loved their vibe. I loved the saturated, slightly distressed colors. Vicki Boutin is the closest I've found to that look. I loved Basic Grey's embellishments- they were a lot different than what you see now. I miss that variety of embellishments. There used to be 6 scrapbook stores in Columbus, including an Archivers. I miss going to all of those stores. It was so amazing to browse through all of the neat stuff. Now there aren't any. What I would give to be able to go to one and see all of the old brands.

Ewww.. remember the pizza and macaroni paper at Michaels? They don't still have that right? Ha, still have a few pieces. What was I thinking? Often use those funky papers to make paper beads.

I miss the October Afternoon lines and especially their warehouse sale. That was like Christmas morning to me!
That Coluzzle - ugh, I never could make it work. I gave it to a friend that liked it.
I still use my Quickutz alpha dies weekly.

Eyelets, Martha Stewart, Brenda Walton, K & Co., Making Memories, the old American Crafts, serendipity squares, page element swaps, sticker swaps, "punchie" swaps, Coluzzle (still use it sometimes), bottle caps (never got into that one), stickers on a roll, MAMBI, and so many more that I don't have time to list. Fun topic!

I have been scrapbooking since the late 90's so I recognize all the things mentioned. I have a PSB full of page toppers, diecuts and stickers and a huge bag of alphabet templates that I haven't had the heart to toss.
I got so sick of "Hello". I remember I bought a pack of BH PL cards and half the pack was HELLO and there were 7 each of the same d@mn design.
Now it seems like everybody has bicycles, they always seem to have flowers in the front basket of the bike. Maggie Holmes always seems to have a deer.

How about "Best Day Ever", everywhere.
Still use my Quickutz little dies, such as tiny detailed little bandaids, multi piece bird caricatures and even a 3 x 4 inch cityscape. I use then with the Sidekick, but still have the hand tool.

Foam stamps from Heidi Swapp , MM, Scrapworks and Lil Davis were all the rage for awhile. Back when I first started the hot off the press paper that was photo realistic was just about we could get. Everything was so very themed and specific. The paoerkins paper dolls. The plastic templates that made the layouts for you, you cut the photo into the same size rectangles as the template, I don’t remember what they were called and I know I am not explaining it well, does anyone know what I am talking about? Deluxe Designs -- frankly I still love their templates and have used various of them in several albums! I'm not particularly creative so having one good balanced template would give me at a minimum 8 layout options. I still really like the albums I made from Deluxe Design templates!

I haven't understood the point to these since they came out! It's a square with rectangles cut out of it. Um...yep. My pictures are already that size. And if not, my trimmer has measurements. And, they don't really help with design IMO. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the same way.

artbabe, I still ink all my layers! I don’t like mixing a lot of pattern right next to each other without inking. It provides a nice separation to the papers. I think most everything I recall from late 90s to early 00s has been mentioned. Vellum was a big thing if I recall - in all sorts of colors and patterns. I still have some in a variety of solids and a sheet of blue and purple stripes! I feel like one thing mentioned was almost totally skipped over. peasquared - elephant dung paper? I am intrigued but fearful to ask…what the heck was that?! I’m getting images of elephants and poop emoji in a variety of colors based on your comment. Please tell me it wasn’t paper made from elephant dung! Oh! I recall two trends that kind of go along with fibers. Who remembers Magic Mesh and Twistel? I didn’t own much Magic Mesh but loved Twistel. I tried to get it in a variety of colors. What about early Jolee’s Boutique? The shock that people would buy stickers that weren’t “acid and lignin free” was huge!

I started scrapping in 2008 when distressing was all the rage. Remember spraying down paper with water, crumpling it up in a ball, and then smoothing it out? Yup, guilty as charged!

On the subject of distressing, remember buying the little packages of walnut ink crystals, which you'd mix with water to distress things, and then drop extra crystals on top to get the darker water splattered look?

I'm going to have to wait a few more years for my early SB memories to be memory lane material. Came into this craft less than 10 years ago so I'm actually discovering things reading through this discussion! I wish people would post photos because I have no clue about some of the stuff that's brought up (teddy bears?)...
Is it too early to bring up the Becky Higgins PL core kits in the magnetic pop-open boxes with AAAAALL the duplicate cards?

Is it too early to bring up the Becky Higgins PL core kits in the magnetic pop-open boxes with AAAAALL the duplicate cards? I never understood the point in that. I never bought the boxes when they were full price but I did buy some at Tuesday Morning. I went through and took out a few of each design to keep but I have no idea what to do with the rest of the duplicate cards. Did anyone ever make a project that used that many duplicates? I like the concept of Project Life but a lot of the things Becky did puzzled me.

You’re right, it does just look like regular handmade paper. We sold Mr. Ellie Pooh products in the Zoo gift shop and I got to meet Mr. Ellie Pooh himself! 😄 It's actually not gross; elephants are herbivores and they perform the initial "processing" of the material. The idea was developed in order to encourage people to live more peacefully with the elephants in their community. You can still buy the paper: mrelliepooh.com/collections/loose-paper-card-stock-and-envelopes/retailAs for my remembrance--remember when everything was brown? I just waited out that phase. As a reader, I was, and still am, a fan of library card pockets. I'm always happy to run across them. Oh, and slide frames. I never used those, but I remember people being excited about them.
