I chose a neighborhood without an HOA so I could park however I wanted. Sometimes my car blocks a half an inch of the sidewalk, I have a short driveway. I only park my car in the driveway when the city is street sweeping once a week or puts up no parking signs. I’d still be uncomfortable with a random neighbor or person coming to my door, standing there, and then leaving. Only to do it once or twice more. I live in a very pedestrian heavy part of a city, not a quiet suburb. HOA has nothing to do with sidewalk laws here. It’s the actual police who will respond and ticket you because you’re breaking an actual law, not someone complaining through the HOA.

Can you park the car perpendicular/sideways to the driveway? Can you make a small parking pad for the car off to the side on the front lawn? This is common on my street. Busy, no parking on street, multiple cars. People have gotten creative so they can get the cars fully off the sidewalk. I grew up with having to park my vehicle at a 45 degree angle in the driveway so our vehicles could fit. I lived in Omaha and we had a neighborhood without any sidewalks, but still had to fit them on the driveways because the streets were way too narrow to park on them safely overnight.

In fact, the linked story says it is a California vehicle code. www.10news.com/news/team-10/family-given-parking-ticket-for-parking-car-in-their-own-driveway

I looked it up myself to be sure we have the same rules and yes we could be ticketed. I don’t think he is going to call on us because he would have by now and he is being creepy by standing on our porch with a pretty large German Shepard which is not ever leashed. If he saw our dog.. a maniac St. Bernard who is still in training he might not want to stand there… if I didn’t have our door double blocked he might just go through the glass.
We will be better about the parking thing. He better just stop creeping around my house.

In our old neighborhood, cars were often parked way over the sidewalk (often into the street). I never even thought to question if it was legal or not. In our new neighborhood, the driveways are longer and there are 3-4 garages per house so the driveways can accommodate the multiple cars. For us, trash days cause more of a sidewalk issue. People have multiple cans that may or may not be on their driveways, sidewalks, lawns, or on the street. Many people have super steep driveways that they walk their cans down and those cans are all over the place. Since I have dogs, I tend to walk my pups on the street so they don't pee on the lawns, but thankfully my street is not busy, so that works for us.

I have a crazy territorial dog who goes nuts if someone just walks past on the street (which is easily 4 car lengths from the road). I would not want anyone I didn’t know with ANY dog, leashed or unleashed, coming up to my house.
If someone had an issue with how my vehicle was parked, they would be wise to talk to us without bringing their dog with them when they came to discuss it.

Regardless, he has no business having an unleashed dog off of his property, and certainly not on yours. I’d ask him (or have my husband do it) to please leave your premises if it happens again - through an open window if you don’t want a face-to-face confrontation. If that doesn’t work, there is always the non-emergency police #.

I’ll echo others that it is a huge pet peeve when cars completely block the sidewalk - but if your car is only blocking a couple inches then that seems like really no big deal and I wouldn’t do anything. As long as there is plenty of room for a stroller or walker or wheelchair etc. it’s fine.

I would get a ticket if I parked in the street during street sweeping, which I have on occasion when I have forgotten about it since it’s only twice a month. I have never gotten a ticket when my bumper is encroaching half an inch onto the sidewalk.

I wish they would do that here. The sidewalks just go unfixed. Lots of older residents who can't necessarily afford the repair. Walking in my neighborhood is like navigating a minefield, lol. Most people walk in the street. So, I'm reading all these posts about nice neighborhoods with flawless sidewalks and then I see I can relate to someone on this thread. Except my neighborhood consists of old homes, lots of 90's homes, and some low income apartments sprinkled in there. Also with the crazy growth I'm pretty sure we are going to be a newlywed and nearly dead neighborhood with the new townhouses.
There may be a law in my town, but I highly doubt they would make an effort to reinforce the sidewalk rule. We don't even have a law about shoveling sidewalks.

I think it does suck to get told you’re wrong post after post, but for reasons others have already mentioned, that’s how message boards work. I applaud the OP for acknowledging she was wrong. Some people double down and refuse to listen.
One reason for continued (civil) comments is I learn a lot from the various perspectives. 2 inches may not seem like a big deal to some but it was a good reminder that people who have disabilities and experience the world very differently from me. Those reminders go beyond the original post and I think are helpful for other readers.

So crazy! We lived in our last neighborhood for 14 years and at least a third of the houses had the sidewalk blocked by cars in the driveway any given day. If not more! And several county deputies lived in the neighborhood as well. (Virginia for reference)

I'm glad you've got that Ring doorbell to install so you can tell him to get the heck off your property with his unleashed dog. Utterly ridiculous for him to stand there looking into your house.

I wonder if his German shepherd is a service dog of any type? That might explain the no leash and why the man has issues with how your son is parking.

Tell your son to park in front of his house. There, problem solved! I bet he is going to have a HUGE problem with someone parking in front of his house. He has nothing better to do than to bug people.

I'm realizing that here's an advantage to not having a sidewalk in the first place. lol. The last time we squeezed two cars into our smaller driveway the back bumper of the second one was just even with the curb. But, since we don't have sidewalks on my block anyone walking past the house would be walking in the street in the first place. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/OrTI4SBmZ2ZYSFv6ag4f.jpg) I haven't read the whole thread yet...was there any explanation for the guy's odd behavior? I'll catch up in a bit.

And several county deputies lived in the neighborhood as well. (Virginia for reference) Same. I walk around cars blocking part of the sidewalk daily and never thought anything about it. Never knew there was a law. Also, I only read these threads to make sure I am not the crazy neighbor. We have two teenage drivers and I feel bad that my daughter’s car in the street is a little in front of the neighbor’s house. We live in a court so not much curb space.

Could you park the cars at an angle to fit them into the driveway better? Even if you have to park a little on the grass?
I never even thought about cars blocking the sidewalk. The way our neighborhood is, we have a big driveway section around the sidewalk, so even if something was blocking the sidewalk by a few inches, you have plenty of room. But I never really notice that in our neighborhood. But that's good to know, and we will make sure ours doesn't block the driveway since it is illegal.
Our township doesn't allow street parking, so sometimes people have to park a car in the yard if they are doing any work on a car in the driveway or if they have people over. You can sometimes park in the street but have to get special permission from the police and that's not easy. We haven't had our July 4th or Super Bowl party in years because our guests would have no place to park. But it is so nice driving through the neighborhood and not haveing to worry about street parking.

Also, I only read these threads to make sure I am not the crazy neighbor. I can identify with that! So many of the scenarios presented on 2Peas are things I have never encountered in my own life.

A few people asked about parking on the grass or sideways...not possible. NO parking on the grass.. That would probably get us in more trouble than the sidewalk thing. We are in a HOA so it's not like we could lay gravel next to the house to make another spot. I'm laughing at the image of the President of the HOA if we did that. He would stroke out. HAHAHA. We (us and neighbors) have a shared driveway.. we each have a double garage and driveway side by side. Sideways wouldn't work either. The only sideways car I have seen is one of those Smart cars. (THAT is what we need..ha)

He probably was getting up the courage the first time to approach you. I know you think a few inches onto the sidewalk is not a big deal, but imagine if he was in a wheelchair. Could he still fit? Can a stroller fit? Easily fit, not brushing up against a truck bumper. You are not likely to win this argument if you report him or whatever because you’re in the wrong. Most cities have laws against blocking the sidewalk. [b So the sidewalk goes across the driveway and there is another foot or so. A wheelchair, stroller or anything have still have lots of room. You barely have to make a little step around. You don’t have to use the street or go into the grass. I don’t usually post here, but I took a look at the NSBR board today, and felt I should respond. First, his coming to your door with his dog is definitely creepy, and is possibly intended to intimidate you. I think a ring doorbell is a great idea, so you can choose whether or not to answer. However, even though you think there is plenty of room, the truck may not always be pulled as far forward as possible, and what you think is enough room may not be. Some people have double strollers. Some have mobility chairs or scooters. Some of the mobility chairs/scooters are wider than others, depending on the size of the disabled person. We have a similar situation in our neighborhood where DH and I are often forced to take our mobility scooters out into the street. It happens to be right by a corner where cars frequently come racing around, going faster than they should. I haven’t made an issue of it with the neighbor whose truck blocks the sidewalk, but it sounds like your neighbor is threatening to get the police out to your house to give you a ticket. Whether to avoid the possibility of a ticket, or just to allow more room for disabled individuals or moms with a double stroller, I hope you can figure out a solution that can resolve this peacefully and satisfactorily to all concerned.

OK OK she gets it. She said they would stop. For Pete's sake this one of the things drives me batty about this board. Pile on - pile on!! The issue is often a simple one-----people read the OP, and then answer it. They don't read the other posts--or they at least don't read all of them before adding their initial thoughts. So they may be "piling on" without realizing it. A simple solution is for the poster to edit the OP. Add a little line that says "ETA: I see now that we could be causing an issue. We'll find a new spot to park.", and then people who find the thread later will realize that the poster has already received ample answer to their question. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) However, I personally don't think a thread is an actual "pile-on" unless there is a nasty attitude/vibe/intent in the posts. Otherwise I just see it as a topic in which a lot of people wanted to add their opinion. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg)

We don't have any HOAs in our town, but the town itself has sidewalk laws. So living here may free you from rules about your garage door being open or how many cars you park in the driveway, or what color siding you choose, but the town itself will still cite you for things like blocking a sidewalk, keeping junker cars on your property, failing to ever cut your grass, etc.

Update
Someone left us a bag of poop under the tire of the truck. A grown ass 60ish man (IF it is him)
We do have a solution to the problem … since our driveway is on an angle we are switching sides and that should solve the problem. One side is slightly longer (a duh moment)
