We will be building our next house. We'll most likely get that ball rolling w/in the next year. We are looking at some plans, getting ideas. Some of them have the kitchen in the front of the house. I'm not sure I like it. But it could be that I'm just used to a traditional walk into the living room area and the kitchen is behind that or towards the back of the house.
So, where is your kitchen? If it's in the front, do you like it? Why or why not?

I would rather the kitchen not be in the front.

You walk in my front door to the entrance, then through to the lounge room, then the kitchen, then the family room. So pretty much smack bang in the middle of the house (the bedrooms and bathrooms are off to the left).
ETA: I would not want my kitchen to be at the front of the house.

My kitchen - and the kitchen I grew up in are to the right of the entry way - through the dining room. I guess I would call that the front of the house if I had to choose.
The most important thing for me would be the view from the kitchen - I would want a nice view. It’s also nice to see people approach the house when you are in the kitchen.

Our kitchen is on the side of the house, in the middle, and overlooks the driveway. Lined up from front of house to back is dining room, kitchen, laundry room, office. It's a pretty standard setup on houses around here.
I have had a kitchen at the front in a townhouse before, and my MIL had her kitchen at the front of the house. She loved it, I am indifferent. The main requirement for me is to have a window over the sink and a view that is nice.

Our kitchen is in the back of our current house and the previous ones, too. I like that the mess can't be seen from the front door if someone stops by. We're able to keep the front entry area relatively neat at all times.
However, since I spend a lot of time there, I might like the kitchen at the front so that I could more easily see the driveway and deliveries approaching.
Have fun planning!

My kitchen is in the front of the house. I love it because I can see people coming and going and I can see the kids playing outside. I also have a beautiful kitchen. Doesn't everyone always end up in the kitchen anyways?

My kitchen is in the back corner of the house ... it is small compared to the square footage of the entire place ... my sink is in the corner with two windows surrounding it which I like It really is a "one man kitchen" which means my cooking was done mainly alone and my dd's didn't learn to do anything

My front door leads to a foyer and then the living room. To the left of the living room is the kitchen. I would not want the kitchen to be the first room I enter.

Ours is in the back of the house, in between the dining room on one side and the family room on the other. There is a wall and door on the dining room side. The other side has a counter that opens into the family room.

Do you have children, dogs etc? When our children were little it was nice when I could watch them from the kitchen window if I popped in the house for a few minutes. Our garage is in the back yard. When you enter the house from the back yard it is nice the kitchen is inside the back yard to bring groceries in.

My kitchen is in the middle, I guess. My office/laundry room and his office are on the front, then the kitchen/breakfast room, and behind that the family room - on one wing of the house. The center of the house is foyer at the front , then dining room and formal living room. The other wing is bedrooms and bathrooms.
The kitchen is a pass through design with a large island at its center. Opens at one end to a main hallway and at the other (breakfast room end) to a screened porch.

My kitchen is along the side of my house. It’s pretty big, and connects to both the living room and sunroom, which are the two gathering areas on our main level.

Mine is at the back, in the middle of the house between the dining area on one side with a patio door out to the deck/back yard and a hallway on the other that leads to a door to the garage on one end, a mudroom closet, 3/4 bath and the first floor laundry on the other end. The laundry room also has a door out to the deck/back yard. If I’m standing at my kitchen sink, I can look out the window to see the back yard, swings, etc.
I wouldn’t want the kitchen in the front of the house with young kids because I wouldn’t want them playing in the front yard even if it was fenced. Security cameras with motion detectors make it so I can see if someone is coming up to my house no matter where I am in the house or anywhere else for that matter. I get an alert on my phone in real time and I can look to see what’s going on.

The kitchen is in the back of my house, there is a huge window facing my back yard. I don’t think any of the houses that I have owned had a kitchen in the front.

When we were gutting and remodeling our house 2 big things I wanted regarding floor plan was a dedicated entry space (before you just walked into a large double room) and that the main room that could be seen from the entry would be easy to keep presentable.
Now we have a small foyer and to the right is the wall to the garage and the left is a large archway to the dining room that we don't eat in, although since the pandemic I do have a small desk in there. It stays pretty clean and picked up most of the time. If you keep walking straight in from the front door you go through a smaller arch way in to our great room. Our kitchen backs to the dining room (there's another walk way on the exterior wall between the two) and then the family room space is at the back of the great room. We also have a small breakfast nook that is a small pushed out area sort of between the kitchen and family room areas. But all 3 are really one big room.
From the window over my sink I can see cars drive down our street which is really nice to keep an eye on things.
We live in a dense So Cal suburb so our lots are small. I would not want a main living space or kitchen in the front of the house where we would have to keep the windows covered for privacy since the street and sidewalks are not that far from the house.
Our neighborhood was built in the mid-late 70s and all the kitchens are in the middle or back of the house.

our house is sort of like a circle of rooms. you walk in the foyer (with the stairs going upstairs and door to basement). on the left, through a double wide opening, is the living room. if you went through the living room.. at the south end of house, you walk through french doors into dining space..which is open to the kitchen in the back south corner of the house. I like being able to take food to backyard from kitchen.. big windows give it lots of eastern light. then there is a door to the foyer (next to basement door) to the right of the foyer, there is a study, with a power room off it. that used to be the formal dining room, but we closed it off to the kitchen. our kitchen originally had 4 doors into it.
so with the kitchen in the back corner, it is handy, but we can close off the french doors to the living room..so you don't see the kitchen/dining. our view is out the front of our house.. no real yard out there. I like where the kitchen is. also, it is only a few steps from front door to doorway into kitchen, so I don't have to haul groceries far.

My kitchen is smack in the middle of our house. I don’t have an open floor plan (house was built in the early 50’s), but I have a window (no glass) where I can see into the front room and through the large windows at the front of the house. I loved having that window when kids were playing outside.

Our kitchen is at the back of the house - we downsized and have the kitchen, dining & living area running across the width of the house. We have large glass sliding doors to our undercover outdoor area and also a serving window to outside where our bbq/outdoor kitchen is. I love it as we can have guest indoors/outdoors in the “same space”.

My kitchen is at the front. It's not visible from the front door but it's the first main room you get to. I like seeing whats going on in my street (I'm very nosy ) and I like that our sitting room feels more private deeper into the house.

I live in a townhouse with 3 floors. My kitchen is on the first floor (second floor to the US peas), at the front of the house. My living room is at the back of the house with a balcony overlooking the garden and a river.

Our kitchen runs front to back, accessed by a door from the front hall. You have to go through the hall and dining room to get to the lounge: 3 doors. That's the only part I don't like. The food prep area/sink is at the back so I have a great view, and there's a net curtain in the front window for privacy, but there's a big hedge between it and the road anyway.

I have an open floor plan so you see the kitchen from the front, back, etc. I can see the lake from the kitchen too. Love it.

I designed every inch of our villa. I purposely had the kitchen built at the back of the house. The largest part of the garden is at the rear of the house and where the pool is. I have two big windows in the kitchen one facing the rear and one facing the side where the herb garden is. I really like this in the summer as I can leave the windows open and I can see and hear the kids in the pool if I go into the kitchen.

Kitchen is the front of house. I like to watch the world go by and see all the comings and goings. This means our sitting room is at the back of the house and overlooks the garden which I prefer.

No way I’d want guests to walk into the kitchen. My kitchen is in center of the home. What style house is this?

Our cottage here is pretty small, but it was gutted and renovated a few years ago. Our main level is one long room that is about 20 feet across. The kitchen is at one end and the entry is in a small vestibule at the other end. This is our 16th house since we’ve been married. One apartment and two houses had the kitchen in the front. The only one that I didn’t care for was when you basically walked right into the kitchen. We didn’t have a dishwasher and there were always dirty dishes in the sink. Otherwise, there was a separation to the front door and it worked with the layout of the house. Those both were small houses with the main living area overlooking a nice backyard, so it worked for the configuration.

Back - but we have big windows that overlook our deck and the woods behind us. My kitchen isn't always spotless, so I'd rather not have it be the first room people walk into.
