Welcome! I've just caught up on the last couple of weeks in this thread. It's great to see that so many are still plugging away. My next project is a hard look at my closet and dresser. Again. I do it pretty regularly, but I'm in a real purging mood for clothes right now so I'm hopeful I can make some of the harder decisions. Welcome, hilldee! Spongemom, I just finished that project myself. Twice a year I change up the summer/winter clothes in my closet and give away anything I haven’t worn in the past year. It makes me irrationally happy to just have clothes I actually wear in my closet rather than a bunch of stuff I’m holding onto just in case. Plus it gives me a reason to buy a few new things each season.

I finally tackled my garage. I hadn't touched anything except the tool chest since I moved in. I even used power tools! I hung all the folding lawn chairs and some other things. Next week I hope to buy a standing cabinet to hold everything currently in bins.
I tossed old bins and cut up a huge tarp. I kept 2 pieces of that and tossed the rest. It looks so good now!

I sold 2 of my sewing machines, a Singer 15-91 and a Singer Rocketeer. I've had both for many years, and loved the look and idea of the Rocketeer, and the 15-91 is what I learned to sew on when I was 7. But I don't use either, and I recently bought an embroidery/sewing machine, so need some room. Both went to good homes, which makes me feel ok letting them go. I'm also selling another newer machine (only 14 yrs old) and hope it goes soon. So I will be down to 3 machines and my serger--all of which I will keep and use. And I've been sewing on one of my older machines just to make sure I want to keep it--and I do!! So just a bit of paring down done with a couple of machines gone and using up a bit of fabric. 11/10/22--YAY! Just sold my Babylock Espire machine. And I'm sure the young gal that bought it will really enjoy sewing with it.

More yard work.
I pulled down every bit of english ivy I could from my side of my chain link (with the metal privacy slide things in it) fence.
I hate ivy because it harbors mosquitoes, and with the winters not really getting to a hard freeze anymore, mosquitoes are a problem from March to November now. It makes the backyard miserable when you're bitten every time you go out.
I can't kill the biggest root, because it's actually not on my property. The ivy originated from the yard behind mine, and slinks over.
The owner of that rental property DGAF and lets the whole yard be wild.
I really need to tackle indoor stuff too, but yard stuff has been very satisfying lately because I see immediate results.

Day 2 of working in my garage (this time around), and I'm discouraged. We left our Christmas decor, wrapping paper, etc. in a mess last winter and with the holidays on the horizon, I knew I needed to get organized. I have sorted all of our gift bags, wrapping paper, ribbons, bows, gift tags, gift card holders, etc., and containerized them. One of our boxes of ornaments had fallen from our shelves -- luckily none of the fragile ornaments broke. But I've packed all of those up and put them away. I've consolidated Christmas cards into one tote, and trust me when I say I'll be lucky to live long enough to send all of them. Oh, and I organized my collection of seasonal wreathes, sent at least six or eight bags of stuff to Volunteers of America and put a ton of cardboard boxes out for recycling today.
I've enlisted DH's help for tomorrow. We need to organize bag chairs (and pitch those that are shot) and card tables. We need to tackle the bags of bags that we've collected and deal with remaining miscellaneous empty boxes. Once that's done, I need to continue to work my way through my Christmas stuff and start on my other seasonal decor totes.
I just have the feeling that it's all never-ending. And that's just the garage. I feel like I've spent most of my life collecting endless amounts of worthless crap. It definitely makes me more mindful of bringing stuff I don't love (and even things I DO love) into my home.
If you've made it this far, thanks for reading. Writing it out is cathartic. Maybe I'll get a second wind tonight and make more progress. I hope.

I like knowing my cupboards are cleaner and have breathing space, but there's nothing quite like seeing the obvious results in your yard. I just have the feeling that it's all never-ending. And that's just the garage. I feel like I've spent most of my life collecting endless amounts of worthless crap. It has taken you a lifetime to collect all this stuff so it makes sense it's going to take a while to sort through it and declutter. It's definitely an uphill battle at times, I'm purposely ignoring a couple of cupboards that I know need to be cleaned out, but you will get there. Until then, feel free to share the frustrations and the wins here, we all get it.

Maybe I'll get a second wind tonight and make more progress. I hope. First off, awesome job!😁 Secondly, I love how you just walked us through that. I can relate so much. With the holidays coming up, I need to figure out what wrap I need, what things I have, etc. I have wrapping supplies in two spots in the house, and I need to combine them and make note of what I actually have. Last year I forgot that I bought several bags of bows on super clearance the year before. So I bought more, not on clearance. I could kick myself. I'm pretty sure I have holiday cards too, but need to go and find them. Decluttering has made me really careful of what I buy and bring in too. It takes so much effort to have stuff. Thinking about where to put it. When to clean it. If it deserves the space I gave it. What to do with it before I die so that my kids don't have to deal with it.

I finally got through all my shoes and purses. A few pairs of shoes I tossed and the rest I washed and will donate along with the purses. I also got the misc. items I'm donating boxed up and ready to be dropped off. Our sunroom/exercise room is all cleaned and reorganized. It actually looks very bare. The house is looking more minimalist and definitely not cluttered - well unless you count DH's office LOL. We can't win every battle right? For all of you on the decluttering journey don't give up! It takes time and is truly a never-ending process. But with hard work and perseverance we can all have the homes we desire that make us happy and give us peace.

amom23 Congratulations on the success! Legacy Girl Your post inspired me to tackle gift wrap stuff this morning. So, I actually had stuff in five places, not two. ![](http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/r481/2peasrefugees/Smilies/blush.jpg.gif) A long bin designed for rolls of wrapping paper. It has what was left over from last year, and two rolls of plain kraft wrap that I originally had the idea I would stamp/paint images on as unique giftwrap for all occasions. You know... that I've never actually done because the effort it involves. I'm challenging myself to wrap some gifts in it for Christmas this year, by wrapping with it plain, then using candy canes and bows to jazz it up. Simple is still good, right? And like the kids actually care anyway? I have put all the bows into one giant reusable grocery bag (well, in gallon sized zippies first to keep them dust free). Oh, did you know I also had a five color curling ribbon roll in there? Me either!😁 It's still in there. We'll see if I use it and reassess next year. Last I have a wide but shallow, under-the-bed type storage bin with lid. It has gift bags, tissue paper (so much!), cards (occassion, TY, and blank), random party supplies (crepe paper, party blowers, silly photo props, etc), mailing supplies (flat rate boxes from USPS, bubble mailers), and some gift tags. Oh, and random amounts of clearance holiday/Christmas cards. It felt good to get everything organized with like going with like. And seeing what I have, and what I need. Need: Gift tags for Christmas, tape, dedicated wrapping scissors. When the next bday rolls around, I will need wrap for that, but I am much better at buying that as needed instead of hoarding it. The only thing I am donating from all the wrap stuff is an unopened box of little kid Valentine's Day cards. My kids are all past that age in school now.

Keeping up the momentum, I went through the pantry, & the kitchen cabinets.
I have more tea than any one household ever needs. I'm mostly to blame for that, as I bought nine boxes last month when the grocery clearanced them for $1/box. But... No more for awhile.
Also, who bought so many decorative sugars and sprinkles for cookie decorating?!
Oh... Me again.
Well,.that's covered for Christmas cookies.

LavenderLayoutLady, so glad I could inspire you! There's another good thing to come from my efforts (and frustration). DH took on the tables and chairs and found a small, perfectly organized spot in the garage to keep them. It looks SO much better, and he pitched two chairs that weren't worth saving. Win! I tackled the remaining boxes (many!) and bags of every kind of bag you could imagine (ridiculousness -- they're BAGS!!!) late last night. I weeded out what needs to be recycled/thrown away and have separated everything accordingly. Just need to take them to recycling in the next day or so. Everything is beginning to look so much better and I appreciate all the encouragement to keep at it. I'm subscribed to an online maker's web site that is teaching me much about arts and crafting, and one of the famous lines is, "Everything we make goes through an ugly stage." When life imitates art! I was in the ugly stage of organizing and cleaning on Friday and thankfully, I've come out on the other side. Still more work to do but I can see the goals at the end of the tunnel. Thanks, friends!

And areas like pantries and clothes closets are always going to need purging and reorganizing. But what I’ve learned is - I enjoy the process. I really love pulling everything out of an area, going through it all, and only putting the carefully chosen items back. It’s a process with a beginning, middle and end which appeals to me. It all seems so orderly. I hate the thought that my home may one day be so decluttered and organized that I have nothing left to do. Lol. I guess what I’m saying is sometimes enjoying the journey can be as satisfying as reaching your destination.

I had a win this weekend. When we bought our new tv unit a few months ago we discovered we no longer had space for the gentleman's wardrobe that sat next to the old cabinet. I listed it online several weeks ago but haven't had any serious interest in it until yesterday. The new owner seems really excited by his purchase and I'm happy it's gone to a new home where I think it will be well loved.

I’m running a tag sale this weekend for a friend.
Her mother’s very overstuffed one bedroom apartment into which she tried to bring waayy too much from her much larger previous home. Combine the fact that she was a QVC shopper for every shiny new kitchen appliance or gadget that they had… whew. Too much.
We had a great day yesterday. Almost all furniture gone and many of the ‘big ticket’ items. I’ll be back this afternoon and have a fair number of people scheduled for certain items. What’s left will go to the hospice resale store.

DH helped me load our Ford Flex with donations - we had one big box that didn't fit and will need to go in the next trip but otherwise the car was stuffed. And we only picked up a couple of books and a small metal bowl when we poked around the thrift store afterwards. I'm calling that a win.
I still seem to be acquiring books faster (or at least as fast) as I can read them but the vast majority are read and donate and I'm hoping to increase the pace and actually DOWNSIZE my TBR pile (I did a ton of Kindle reading recently which doesn't make a physical dent in the pile).

I have just caught up! Yay to everyone on all the progress… having missed out on the 2 peas board for a month so many peas have accomplished so much (even if they don’t feel like they have!) Reason for the absence - just spent five straight weeks (with only two days off) painting my whole 4 bed house for at least six hours every day (as well as working and parenting and…) in preparation for new flooring to be laid. To add insult to injury, we also now have to basically move out everything in the house as well so that they can lay the floors. 50% of the way into the removal/storage process (thanks to great neighbours with available sheltered space, a large garage and side awning out of the rain which started as soon as we moved boxes 🙄 we can move and store without paying someone or having to hire a storage space) and all I can say for a fact is there are a large number of items that are NOT moving back into the house once the floors are done. I have warned the children and dh they are not exempt, and they will be sorting through their stuff too. Having had to move it all, dh is finally in agreement that we can Chuck out old pcs etc which is a HUGE WIN. Ds is ready to let go of his Lego stash and dd wants to match her new room with more grown up things so she’s in a clear out frame of mind too. Tired BUT seeing this as a cathartic moment where we can reset and reevaluate what is important to us now and not keep for no reason. For example, I cant wait to get rid of the wine glasses I have stored for 12 years now. I don’t drink wine. Our friends don’t drink wine at our house as we don’t have it to offer to them. Why do I have 10 sets (yes that’s at least 60!!!!) wine glasses? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ?

lg wow! Good work! Sounds like a lot of work is going into your home. linda That's a lot of donations! Good job! I have two annoying grocery sized bags of mostly kid clothing donations that I haven't been able to drop off yet. I'm down to one thrift store still in business in my area. But it has extremely limited hours because it's volunteer run. It opens and closes when I'm already at work. The other nearest thrift closed suddenly. It's the fourth reincarnation of a thrift store at that location in ten years. I'm not shocked this time, though. The prices were outrageous. An obviously worn Walmart brand tee shirt started at $8. Shoes started at $30/pair, falling apart or not. Books started at $3 for a children's paperback and $5 for adult fiction paperback. Anywho.... This morning I tossed a shirt that I actually really liked, except for the fact that it was too thin. Like tissue paper. I bought it for the design, but then realized I couldn't really wear it out because I felt indecent in it. So I've been wearing it as a sleep top, but always with something on top. I'm just tired of making sure I only wear it layered. Out it went.

wow lg - that's a TON of work but will be so worth it LavenderLayoutLady - do you have freecycle or buy nothing or similar groups in your area? You can post items and people can come pick them up. You can even post kerb or porch pickups where you just put the items out and first come first served pick up and you don't even have to deal with people.

You are going to love your new flooring and will be so happy to have decluttered! my mum had SO many wine glasses (and other alcohol glasses) when we cleaned out her house. Hundreds of them - and she had lived alone for 30 years at that point and while she entertained, she only had a couple of people over at a time. She bought me wine glasses when she visited one time because she was horrified I didn't own any (we couldn't afford to drink wine at that stage in our life) - I still have those and we use them at holidays - usually with soda, lol.

a few more things have made it into the donation box - I have tee-shirts in two sizes and the larger size is really TOO big for me so as I grab one from the drawer, I'm adding it to the donation bin. At some point, I'll just go through the drawer and grab any that are left but that's not today. Two came out of the clean laundry and went straight into donation though.
DD had a lap desk she never uses and she has put that in donation along with a nightgown that no longer fits.
I tossed an old pair of pyjamas that weren't worth donating.
AND I haven't bought anything for myself or the house during the BF sales

linda Good to keep the momentum going. I tossed two more shirts yesterday that were just cleaning clothes. They developed holes that had become just too much. Also been tossing socks every time I put one on that has a hole. I also didn't buy myself or the house stuff during BF. I thought about updating the tree ornament color scheme, but what we have is good enough, and no one would care but me anyway.

I emptied out every kitchen cabinet and drawer this weekend, and either tossed, added to the garage sale box, or reorganized back in the cabinets. My kitchen is so much more efficient now, and it all looks great. I would like to hire a cabinet maker to add some pull out drawers to a couple of my cabinets to make it even easier. I also have a built in wine rack that I would like to be converted back to a cabinet. I also need a better way to organize my spices and oils, but overall the kitchen looks fantastic! I'd love to hire someone to personalize my kitchen storage as well! We'd have more storage if it weren't for the fact that our washer and dryer are in our kitchen area. Relocating them isn't so easy, though. Maybe one day ... *sigh*

We donated a few boxes of Christmas ornaments that we have tried to sell for years. Also donated some clothing I have had on eBay for a year plus with little or no views. At least 2 regular sized trash bags full.
I also took off over 400 books off eBay. I couldn't compete with the big sellers. Donated those too. We had bought several collections too. Dad has recycled some of the pamphlets and magazine type books. Thrown away the stained/ripped ones.
We are still going through the thousands of still in the package Hot Wheels/Matchbox. Dad donated some to local organization that helps the local working poor, homeless, families in crisis, etc. They provide Christmas gifts for kids. This same organization is the one my Extension group does bags for.
I have also been decluttering my craft stuff. It will likely all be donated to local art non profit to either sell for funds or use in kids/teens programs.

I love seeing everyone’s progress.! I have not had anything to contribute lately but the last couple of weeks we finally got our garage cleaned out! Most of the stuff was DH’s and it was a subject we bickered about so often. He had stuff everywhere and 3 long huge work benches with stuff piled all over. We got rid of those and bought 4 tall storage cabinets to store all of his tools and stuff in. He got rid of a lot and took some things to our back shed. I can’t tell you how nice it is to have it finally cleaned and so much space! I’m not embarrassed to have our garage door open anymore and I plan to sit out there with my heater and pass out Halloween candy tomorrow. I’m trying to be so conscious of what I bring in the house and what I get others for Christmas this year. Just so tired of so much stuff! WOW! Congrats!! I get the being embarrassed part, too! I always used to say that I would never be one of *those* people, but here I am! UGH I'm so looking forward to having our garage in order, but it is tough with a DH who likes to hold on to things. *sigh* I am hoping my efforts will eventually rub off on him. My home gym is also in the garage, and I'm looking forward to being able to have the space to work out comfortably again. I too, am simply tired of all the stuff!

Hello, all! So exciting and inspiring to read everyone's progress. Congratulations on everyone's progress!
My update: I previously mentioned wanting and needing to cut down considerably on the amount of home decor I have stored in my home. I have been plugging along: donating some items and gifting others to family or to members of a Buy Nothing group.
Vent: While I appreciate the concept of Buy Nothing groups, I do sometimes find the time it takes to list, communicate, and deal with people to be annoying at times.
Examples:
1) "What's your address? I'm coming now." (Umm..did I say I'm available now?! Maybe I'm not home. Maybe I'm cooking dinner. Maybe I'm taking care of my screaming grandchild.)
2) I'd really love to have that item. Is there any chance you're coming to town sometime? (my listings always specifically state PICK-UPS ONLY. Recipients must come to my location. You want it, you come get it.)
3) Then there are the ones who agree to a time, but when I message to see if they're on their way yet, it's "Yes, but I'm stopping at Target first" or some other reason to explain why they will be late - as if I have nothing better to do than wait on them to show up.
Sometimes, it feels like it's more trouble than it's worth. I've balanced things out by simply donating a bunch of stuff to two different organizations just to make things easier on me. Some things go to a cousin of mine who also loves decor items.
Overall, I've made great progress. I have about ten bins that are now COMPLETELY EMPTY! I can't believe it! I've gone through all of my holiday decor bins, with the exception of Christmas. My goal is to be able to store all of my decor bins in our garage. No more splitting between the garage and upstairs rooms.
Some things I have been keeping in mind as I go through the process:
- I ask myself if I really LOVE the item (inspired by Marie Kondo's "does it spark joy" method). - I ask myself: If you had to move to a smaller home today, would you want to take this?
I also sort of incorporate the Swedish Death Cleaning method of asking myself how much of a burden my possessions will be on my loved ones to manage when I'm gone. Aside from reducing the number of things I own, I find that having things organized and labeled makes me feel better.
I now use an app called ToteScan. There are labels with QR codes that I stick on each bin. I do still write out an identifying label that I tape to each bin as well. For example: "Halloween Outdoor." For each bin, I scan the QR code and give it a title in the app. I then add pictures of the items. Sometimes, I just take a picture of a group of items such as "mini pumpkins." In the past, I would list all of the items on a paper and tape that paper to the end of the bin.
I'm liking this system so much better. With the app, I can easily pull up my inventory. The reason I like this is because it prevents me from buying unncessary things. It might be a bit much for some people, but I thought I'd share in case it might be helpful to anyone else. The app also provides an option to include where the bin is located such as "attic" or "guest room." I also do not need to scan the QR code. As long as I can read the letters and numbers, I can find the bin in the app.
My goals for this week: - I'm setting a specific goal to get rid of at least 60% of my collection of Santa dolls that I used to use for my Santa-themed tree. I've been saving all of them, but they require a HUGE bin. Ummm..I've had them for about 20 years now! I'm ready to let some of them go. - gift our Wii play system and games to a cousin - finally get rid of our life-sized Jack Skellington doll that has been living in the corner of our family room for far too long (he's DD1's fave) - gift/donate at least one bin's worth of Christmas decor
Whew! Sorry for the super long update! Keep going, everyone!
Oops! Forgot to add that I have found that I miss absolutely none of the items I have gotten rid of!!

Prettyprettypaper, if we are giving something away that we have listed online we sometimes put it in the mailbox or beside the front step. If we are selling something we give an approximate location (we list the postal.code as a store nearby and give out the address when they are on their way. It usually works out fine. Sometimes we meet people at the store or put first come first served on the ad. I will look at items in the house and ask myself if it brings me joy. Three fish tanks inside each other did not bring us joy and our children did not want them. We listed them for free and someone picked them up on his way home from work at 8 in the morning. He wanted to teach his nephew how to raise fish. We also find places to donate items. Although I am tempted to buy more Christmas items we donated some of ours last year and like the boxes that we keep them in now.
