I was doing an Ohio State University page and needed a patterned paper that was grey. For the life of me I couldn't think of a scrapbook line that had good greys.
Then I remembered- a long time ago (15 years maybe?) Basic Grey had a line called Black Tie. It was all black and greys. So I dug through my stash and there it was! So the page went together beautifully. I don't think I've ever seen a line like that since.
Why aren't there lines like that anymore? Basic Grey used to have lines that came in such pretty palettes and that weren't all themed. Even the themed lines came with lots of non-themed papers.
I can't think of any manufacturers that make papers like that anymore. The closest I can get is Vicki Boutin- a lot of her papers are just colors and not themes.
I have a ton of Basic Grey in my stash but I almost hate to use it because then I won't have it anymore. I have a pet line, Max and Whiskers, that is my all time favorite pet line ever. I am getting very near the end of it and it makes me sad.
Anyways, I'm just feeling nostalgic about Basic Grey today. I think I'll dig out my old lines and try to use them today.
What were your favorite Basic Grey lines?

I love Basic Grey! I mean, I really love it! I miss them being in business but I do have a pretty good stash. I use it a bit, but not too much. LOL! Honestly, I think all the collections are my favorite, but my top 4 are for sure: Ambrosia, Persimmon, Periphery, and Wisteria! All so beautiful! And, yes, they really did have great grey papers! I think that are some papers/companies out there that aren't always themed designs, but I think part of the problem is that everything is so samey anymore! I have seen some of the companies from outside the US making more papers that are more graphic and design based. Of course, I can't think of who they are right now. But, if I do, I will come back and comment. I agree with Vicki Boutin's stuff being similar. I really her papers and the bright colors.

I don't even know where to look on the web to find out what the collection was called. Does anyone know of a site that has all the BG collections with images and labels?
I only bought a handful of sheets from my favorite. It was a Christmas collection with red and a pretty blue. Loved that one. It might have been Blitzen.

I have a good BG stash too - love Max and Whiskers! Yesterday I pulled out and used a sheet from their “Basics” line. That is one that hurts me to use, it’s sooo good. I think I had each pack - white, manilla, and I think a brown. The branding strip is date 2009. Great, basic backgrounds - some look like notebook or ledge, graph, etc. Simple Stories has a collection that’s an ok substitute, but they go too yellow/cream; the BG manilla is perfect when you don’t want a stark white.

I have always found BG papers to feel muddy and dark, so I didn't buy them often. I did like some of their Christmas designs.
I think when Echo Park came out in 2010, they changed the landscape of scrapbooking collections. IIRC they only had 12x12 paper & sticker sheet "collection" packs when they first started and they were very theme heavy, but not overly "cutesy" like Doodlebug or Bella Blvd so more appealing to the average scrapbooker. After they took off in the industry, I think other companies jumped on "themed" scrapbooking collections harder than ever before.
I feel overly themed designed collections have slowed down quite a bit actually. AC brands have had a LOT of non-themed (or just barely themed collections) in recent years - think Maggie Holmes, Paige Evans, Obed Marshall, Amy Tan, Dear Lizzy, Vicki Boutin and Jen Hadfield. I think Shimelle was the most themed of their designers, followed by Pebbles. Pink Paislee has had plenty of not heavily themed collections. Same with Crate Paper. Bo Bunny also has lots of non-themed collections. For non-AC brands: Pretty Little Studio, My Minds Eye, Kaisercraft, Paper Rose, Pinkfresh Studio, Paper House Productions, Prima/Julie Nutting and Rosie's Studio (to name a few).
I don't see Echo Park ever changing; themed scrapbooking is their wheelhouse - same with Doodlebug and Bella Blvd. I consider PhotoPlay to be similar to them. I would have included Simple Stories here too, but I think they've turned a corner and expanded their offerings the last few years. Their newest summer and "crafty" collections are great examples of this.
TBH I see it less "too many themed collections" and more "not my style". You like what you like, and if you don't like what's being released/what is popular, it's disappointing for sure. Trends almost always outstay their welcome in this industry; they move SO slowly.

I'm glad you found exactly what you needed in your stash, I love it when that happens. I used some of my Chatterbox papers a few months ago and it made me so happy to work with it.
I was really into Basic Grey back in the day but bought too much to it. I just sorted all of my papers last fall and have a stash of it to sell on kijiji this spring for my annual purge sale. They're really pretty but I just won't use them anymore.

My favourite was Colour Me Silly, and I still have a fair bit of it. I had planned to use it on an end-of-year gift for DS's Year 6 teacher, because she loved bright colours. But she pissed me off with a few things she did and said throughout the year, which kind of spoiled his last year of primary school, so she got nuthin! And I got left with a stack of Color Me Silly.

Love love love Basic Grey and I wish I had bought more of it when I had the chance - who knew back then that it wouldn't be around forever? I'd have a hard time picking just one line to be my favorite BG of all, but Sultry, Periphery, Lemonade, and Out of Print probably come close to the top. I still have a whole 6x6 pad of Sultry, but sadly none of the others I mentioned. I still have miscellaneous bits of a few of the later lines left (Adrift, Tea Garden, Spice Market, Serenade, Marjolaine, Grand Bazaar & a few others) - mostly 6x6 pads, a few collection packs, a few sticker sheets & ephemera packs, random papers where I didn't buy the whole collection... artbabe, I agree there aren't any lines today that really are close to what Basic Grey was. Also, this Buckeye wants to see your OSU page!!

I have lots of old Basic Grey going back to their first lines. I really like Hang 10…I found it very easy to use, but mostly I just hoarded it. I’m finally just starting to dig some of it out to actually use. I figured some of it is approaching 18 years old and it needs to be used!

Basics & Black Tie are my favorite BG collections. Luckily, I still have an original Cropper Hopper filled with BG & often incorporate it into my layouts. I always request non-themed neutral collections & certainly miss the plethora & diversity of companies, styles, & creativity in the industry during the 2000s.

Ahhhh -- Basic Grey! I love Basic Grey -- Sublime and Motifica -- and their collaboration with Kay& Co which resulted in EMBOSSED Sublime paper and layered stickers. SIGHHHHHH! I started going "off" Basic grey when a lot of you apparently really started liking them -- the brighter collections didn't move me as much as the first collections. Then - they also distributed card kits and they were wonderful! Very fun, various sized, clever use of product AND packaging. I very much miss Basic Grey and I think that most current lines are too "themed" -- even if the theme is merely "floral" or "pink" -- and I don't care for "cut apart cards"!

I was on the BG team for some years and I started with some old collections like Origins, Fact and Fiction, Konnichiwa. Then Persimmon, Capture, CArte Postale, Second City by KP (my fave)

Love Basic Grey. I think I discovered it’s beauty and versatility when I was able to see it in person. Recollections (remember Michaels scrapbook specialty stores?) used to carry extensive Bessie Grey products. My favorites were Obscure, Lime Ricky, Origins, Recess, Periphery, and Out of Print. When they changed to a different look and feel, I really liked Hipster, Hey You, Hey Boy, and Hey Girl. BG managed to strike an nice balance of not “too” with those boy and girl lines and most of their collections. Looking back at the evolution of BG, I miss how usable each of them really were. There is really no BG I didn’t like, so even collections I initially resisted, I ended up picking up. I still have quite a stash that will stay with me as long as I craft. I still have quite a few of the fibers, too.
I miss the good old days when there were distinct looks and feels to each company and not everything was pink. Does anyone remember how bold and graphic AC used to be back in the day?

Love this summary Ryann! I spend way more time than I should analyzing papercrafting trends, so I'm glad to know I'm not the only one! On the topic of Echo Park, does anyone remember a Pea from the old 2Peas board who absolutely loved Echo Park? I think her username had "cherry" in it. She ended up leaving the board when they redesigned the site because it had too much white for her, it hurt her eyes. I didn't have a personal relationship with her but I always wondered if she found a way to the new board once the old 2Peas shut down.

I loved Basic Grey! Every last bit that I ever owned is already in my albums.
And I'm glad, but also sad, if that makes sense.
I really miss paper & collections being so useable. No silly random icons. Just color and mood.

Thanks Ryann! I shall investigate!
My favourites were Konnichiwa (which I used for a travel album) Recess (a bit grungy but in a good way) Scarlets Letter (what's not to love?!) Sultry (I'm a pink and green gal) and Stella Ruby (flowery, but in a good way) So many of the collections now are too cartoony for me. I still love the sophisticated patterns and detailed designs that BG always came up with and would love to see something similarly classy.

I'm embarrassed to say I have most of the lines mentioned. Pretty much, if it was Basic Grey, I bought it.
I miss Basic Grey chipboard, the fabric flowers, the fabric covered brads, the flags, and all of the other more unique embellishments. Way back in the beginning they just had punch out diecut alphabets and tags, but they really expanded as it went on.
I loved Konnichiwa. There was a fall/leaf line I really loved- I can't find the name- it worked beautifully for my nephew's fall senior photos. And Origins- I've used so much of it for zoo pages. I found a bunch of it years later at Tuesday Morning and I was so excited I got the replenish my stash.
I think I just like the fact that they were more centered around Color Palettes than other lines. I'm not sure how to describe it. American Crafts I guess has less themed lines. But Amy Tan's color palettes were all over the place, Maggie Holmes has the same color palette every single time, Paige Evans also looks the same in every release. I just loved how every Basic Grey release was so different.

I remember loving Wanted and Gretel and hoarded them like crazy. Was it BG the also came out with that camping line with the s'mores? Happy camper or something? Liked that too. And then there was Origins. So pretty. And Max and Whiskers. Have a ton of that too. I wasn't a huge fan of the grunge look some of the lines had, but most were so pretty. AND ARCHAIC! Couldn't leave that one out ETA: I just looked at a few of these lines again and they are Cosmo Cricket and NOT Basic Grey. I guess in my head they were the same.

Like everyone else, I loved Basic Grey, too. Fortunately, I am a quilter and can still indulge myself with their fabric lines. I usually think, "wouldn't this look good, too, in paper?" Their Grunge is a favorite for a blender and I use it often in my quilts for the backing fabric.
