Read page two!!!! Ginni Thomas has signed a "fringe" letter that the Capital attackers/seditionists did nothing wrong.... Wife of Justice Clarence Thomas wife signed off on letter saying Capitol attackers 'have done nothing wrong' Sarah K. Burris January 18, 2022 It has been less than a week since 11 Oath Keepers were arrested with seditious conspiracy, but the spouse of Justice Clarence Thomas believes that they "have done nothing wrong." Bulwark's Charlie Sykes pointed to a letter signed by Ginni Thomas along with many other fringe conservatives like the Family Research Council, the chair of the Tea Party Patriots Fund and the president of the Club for Growth. The letter speaks out against Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), who serve on the Jan. 6 committee which bothers Republicans who believe the GOP should be unified in protecting those who participated in a "coup," as three retired U.S. Army generals characterized it. *** It adds to questions about Mrs. Thomas that surfaced after the attack at the U.S. Capitol. On Jan. 6, she was supporting the violence as it unfolded on her social media. When screen captures were being circulated, she promptly deleted her Facebook account, as Law and Crime observed at the time. ** Mrs. Thomas has a "long history of incendiary rhetoric, particularly online," CNN.com reported in a report about "rankled" former clerks of Judge Thomas. It prompted progressives to ask the Jan. 6 Committee to call Thomas to answer questions about whether she helped fund any of the operations through her Republican organization Groundswell. Others said that Thomas should be recused from any cases that ultimately involve Jan. 6 as a result. www.rawstory.com/clarence-thomas-wife-january-6/

Not only that but if his wife was involved in any way at all, how could he possibly be impartial?

Yes, she is entitled to her own opinion. But that makes me wonder why she felt it necessary to delete her FB account. 🤔

I don't think that is ok. Why is not ok" She is entitled to her own opinion. Judges and justices routinely recuse themselves from cases in which they may have a conflict of interest or some other personal connection. Justice Thomas’s wife was actively campaigning against the ACA when it was before the court, but he (rather shockingly) refused to recuse himself. I have no faith in his impartiality in political matters. Do you truly not see the problem with Gini Thomas’s political activities while her husband is making life-and-death decisions that affect every American?

She was also a 'lobbist' for 'Citizens United' And Special piece in Mother Jones 2013..includes a whole lot more.... Virginia “Ginni” Thomas is no ordinary Supreme Court spouse. Unlike Maureen Scalia, mother of nine, or the late Martin Ginsburg, mild-mannered tax law professor who was good in the kitchen, Thomas came from the world of bare-knuckled partisan politics. Over the years, she has enmeshed herself ever more deeply in the world of political advocacy—all the while creating a heap of conflict of interest concerns surrounding her husband, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Her role in Groundswell, the coalition of conservatives waging a “30 front war” against progressives and the GOP establishment that was revealed by Mother Jones on Thursday, revives questions about the propriety of Thomas’ activism on issues that have or could become the subject of Supreme Court cases. www.motherjones.com/politics/2013/07/ginni-thomas-groundswell-conflict-interest/

If true wow and there is no reason he should be hearing anything to do with it. He should recuse himself.
She is entitled to her opinion no matter how crazy we think it is but if she is funding it in any way then he should step away.

I agree with that, but some of her actions do not cast her(as the spouse of a SCJ) in a good light. That letter she signed, for example. She has every right to sign it, but IMO it is impolitic.

I’m really not familiar with the norms around judges recusing themselves. Are there any legal standards or common ethical guidelines? Maybe some of the legal peas can provide some insight?

Exactly. eta: with all of Trump’s hand-picked justices voting against him, it must have been relatively clear. Thomas should have recused himself.

The piece lists numerous situations where Ginni was involved with groups who eventually went to the SCOTUS where many thought he should recuse... And he didn't .. here is a way, it seems controversial, bit who cares if it saves our democracy.. Not a whole lot to lose for us.. The pathway to impeaching Clarence Thomas begins hereBob Brigham January 24, 2022 "In a sane world, Jane Mayer’s excellent piece on Ginni Thomas in The New Yorker would set off a series of events that would lead to her husband Clarence Thomas’s impeachment and removal from the Supreme Court. Ginni is involved with numerous far-right organizations and schemes that take very public positions on Court decisions across a range of social and political issues, such as last week’s 8-1 holding that Donald Trump could not block the release of documents related to the January 6 insurrection," New Republic editor Michael Tomasky wrote. "Thomas was the lone dissenter in that case. His wife sat on the advisory board of a group that sent busloads of insurrectionists to Washington that day. In addition to that, she cheered the insurrection on Facebook." Tomasky argued that the corruption had been going on for decades. *** "The House Judiciary Committee could hold hearings into Ginni’s organization and associations. The select committee on January 6 could ask her to testify and, once she refuses, subpoena her, which would require her husband to recuse himself on all January 6–related matters," he explained. "That would be hugely controversial, so they probably won’t do it. But why not? Here’s a question for you. If the Republicans retake the House this November, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee is going to be Jim Jordan. He’s probably going to lead an impeachment of Joe Biden. Think he’ll be cowed because it’s hugely controversial?" Tomasky concluded that for Democrats, "it’s long past time to make an issue of [Clarence Thomas] and his wife."www.rawstory.com/clarence-thomas-2656467434/

Another, only the best... Clarence Thomas exploits 'gaping hole' in ethics law to decide cases where his wife may have an interest: report Matthew Chapman January 31, 2022 On Monday, writing for The Washington Post, Michael Kranish explained the ethics law loophole that allows Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to ignore his own conflicts of interest — even those involving his right-wing activist wife. "While the Supreme Court is supposed to operate under regulations guiding all federal judges, including a requirement that a justice shall disqualify himself in any proceeding in which his impartiality might reasonably be questioned,' there’s no procedure to enforce that rule," wrote Kranish. "Each justice can decide whether to recuse, and there is no way to appeal a Supreme Court member’s failure to do so. Unlike in lower courts, there is no other judge that can step in, and thus a recusal by one justice would mean considering the case with only eight justices, increasing the chance it could not be resolved. Thomas has taken advantage of this ability to police himself. He has recused himself 28 times while serving as a justice, mostly on petitions that weren't even heard by the Court — but has never recused himself on matters that intersect with the activism of his wife, Virginia Thomas, and one of the most recent examples involves the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Ginni Thomas’s name stood out among the signatories of a December letter from conservative leaders, which blasted the work of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection as 'overtly partisan political persecution,'" noted the report. Thomas went on to be the only justice who voted to grant a request by former President Donald Trump, who is accused of inciting the attack, to block release of White House records to the House committee investigating the matter. "That vote has reignited fury among Justice Thomas’s critics, who say it illustrates a gaping hole in the court’s rules: Justices essentially decide for themselves whether they have a conflict of interest, and Thomas has rarely made such a choice in his three decades on the court." A recent report indicated that even Trump himself thought Ginni Thomas was a "wacko" — but kept silent about it as he unsuccessfully tried to push her husband off the bench to get another Supreme Court seat to replace. www.rawstory.com/clarence-thomas-conflict-of-interest/

Now, this is a bit scary. Is it legal? DeSantis connecting with both Ginni and Clarence? Ron DeSantis working behind the scenes with Clarence Thomas and his wife: report Tom Boggioni February 04, 2022 According to a report from Politico, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has developed a relationship with far-right Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his activist wife Ginni, citing a watchdog group that has obtained information about emails between the three. With Ginni Thomas under scrutiny due to her connections to the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, which has led to concerns about her husband's votes on any cases before the court involving Donald Trump, Politico is now reporting on the burgeoning relationship between the two and the man who appears to be Trump's heir apparent."Emails handed over to American Oversight, a group that bills itself as a government watchdog, suggest that DeSantis is in regular contact with Justice Clarence Thomas," Politico's Gary Fineout reports. "In June 2021, Thomas' wife, Ginni, who runs her own consulting firm, worked with the DeSantis administration to have the governor talk to a coalition of groups, including people affiliated with Judicial Watch, the conservative organization that uses information requests and lawsuits to investigate public officials."The report goes on to note that Ginni Thomas has bragged about her relationship with the potential GOP presidential nominee in 2024 and wrote, "...my husband has been in contact with him too on various things of late.” Asked about what the DeSantis and the Justice and the Florida Republican have been discussing his spokesperson refused to respond, but Helen Aguirre Ferré, the executive director of the Republican Party of Florida, stepped up and claimed, "I can’t speak about any private conversations Governor DeSantis may or may not have had with anyone but both he and Justice Thomas believe in the separation of powers and defend individual liberty, the law and the Constitution as written.” www.rawstory.com/ron-desantis-2656557230/#cxrecs_s

I'm not the only one ... A CNN panel on Friday discussed Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas's apparent conflict of interest due to his wife engaging in activism against the January 6 Select Committee at the same time he was the sole justice voting to block transfer of documents to the committee.CNN's Pamela Brown discussed the situation with University of Texas Law Professor Steve Vladeck, who outlined the clear risk of the situation. "There are surely substantive reasons, consistent with his jurisprudence, why Justice Thomas dissented from the Court's decision to not help President Trump in that case," said Vladeck. "But for folks who are already skeptical of the Court, for folks who already view it as a deeply partisan, political institution, the fact that he is the sole dissenter, given what we know about Ginni Thomas's involvement, sets off alarm bells." *** "The debate has continued because of Ginni Thomas's ties to another issue before the court she sits on the advisory board of a conservative group, the National Association of Scholars," said Brown. "They submitted two legal briefs to the Supreme Court in favor of plaintiffs challenging affirmative action and admissions at two universities. Peter Wood is president of the organization, and said that she played no role in the legal briefs." "Ginni Thomas's activism stands in contrast to the spouses of other justices," noted Brown. "Chief Justice John Roberts' wife Jane retired from practicing law and resigned from a leadership role with an anti-abortion group. When late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg became a circuit court judge, her husband left his law firm." www.rawstory.com/clarence-thomas-2656562090/

I saw FOUR headlines today ... Including NYT.. Clarence Thomas' network organized to overturn the 2020 election results: NYTBob Brigham February 22,2022 The network of former Clarence Thomas clerks was mobilized to action following the 2020 presidential election, The New York Times reported Tuesday. The report focused on wife Ginni Thomas, reporting "it was after Trump’s November loss that she would prove her loyalty beyond doubt, when she and her group urged on efforts to overturn the election." New reporting also shows just how blurred the lines between the couple’s interests became during the effort to overturn the 2020 election, which culminated in the rally held at the Ellipse, just outside the White House grounds, aimed at stopping Congress from certifying the state votes that gave Joe Biden his victory. Many of the rally organizers and those advising Trump had connections to the Thomases, but little has been known about what role, if any, Ginni Thomas played, beyond the fact that on the morning of the March to Save America, as the rally was called, she urged her Facebook followers to watch how the day unfolded," the newspaper reported. The deep-dive report focused on Ginni Thomas' political activism. "In the weeks after Trump’s loss, court challenges began to pile up from his team, his allies and even Republican lawmakers," the newspaper reported. "By then, the network around the Thomases was lighting up. On Dec. 10, a former Thomas clerk and close friend of the couple’s, John C. Eastman, went on 'War Room,' a podcast and radio show hosted by Bannon. Eastman argued that the country was already at the point of a constitutional crisis — and he urged the Supreme Court to intervene. Bannon eagerly agreed." The report noted Ginni Thomas was not only tied to Eastman and Bannon, but also Cleta Mitchell, who was on Trump's Jan. 2 call trying to overturn the election results in Georgia."Turning Point USA, on whose advisory board Ginni Thomas had served, was a sponsor of the Jan. 6 event and provided buses for attendees. Other sponsors included two more groups with which Ginni Thomas had long ties. One was the Tea Party Patriots, headed by Jenny Beth Martin, a fellow Council for National Policy activist. The other was Women for America First, which held the permit for the rally at the Ellipse and was run by Amy Kremer," the newspaper reported. "The spectacle of a Supreme Court justice’s spouse taking to Facebook to champion the attempt of a defeated president to stay in power, as Ginni Thomas did on the morning of Jan. 6, crossed a line for several people in the Thomases’ circle who talked to The Times." www.rawstory.com/ginni-thomas-election-2020/
