I just started Project Life for the first time last month, and I'm planning on catching up on the last couple of years. I subscribed to Studio Calico, Elle's Studio, and AE's SBTM. I also ordered and printed a number of digital cards so I could start work on my 2019 album.
Before things get too out of hand, I want to figure out how I'm going to organize them.
I'm thinking I should separate them by Journaling and Decorative.
I get stuck on sub-categories for each of these. Color? Holiday? Event? Type of sentiment?
How do you organize your pocket cards?

I organize mine like this:
Holiday cards get stored separately with my holiday scrapbook papers/embellishements. I will pull them out when I am doing PL for those holidays. I don't like having *all the things* on my desk when I work. So if Im not needing holiday cards, I put them away.
Quote cards (a favorite of Ali and SC) and very themed type cards are stored by very broad themes: love, education, family, friends, motivational etc.
Everything else is sorted into colors: green/blue, pink/red, orange/yellow/gold, neutrals and rainbow.
I try not to overthink it. Whatever color I first see, is the color I store it in. So if its a card with a ton of blue, some black and some pink, I would store it in blue.

Take the clutterbug.me/what-clutterbug-are-you-test - it's really helped me. I don't like micro categories. I'd sort by decorative & journalling. Then, I'd split those by colour. If they have an obvious theme that only works with pictures from that theme (i.e. Christmas), I'd make a category for those.

I separate out the ones that I keep with my themed supplies (Christmas, birthday, travel) but everything else is just separated as journaling or not journaling. I don't have a massive stash of cards so I don't mind flipping through them all to find what I need at any given time, but I'm pretty good at finding something that works and putting the rest away without checking to see if there is something better.
If you feel you need sub-categories, consider how you look for cards - do you think "I need pink" or do you think "I need something love themed"? If you don't already have a massive stash, you may also want to see what types of cards are not getting used each month - there's no point making a pink category if you use all your pink cards each month.

I can’t advise you as to the ‘how’ to file them I’ve got mine filed by set and it’s clumsy. I think I might do the pull out the highly themed then by color filing that mom & cycworker mentioned. Because right now I’m lost in my searching. But where to store them I can help with. The large shoe drawers from container store fit them perfectly. I mean perfectly. I do 4x6 with 2 lines related 2x3 in front. One drawer fits a ton of cards. I guess as I move & reorganize I’ll switch to color filing as that is how I scrap.

Here’s a quick photo of what my storage looks like. Front row is 3*4, and back row is 4*6. I have a couple extra sections so 3x8 get one, as done white blank cards. I use homemade chipboard dividers if some color sections are thin so multiple categories can share one section.

Thanks for your replies, mom, cycworker, Chinagirl828 and hop2! I'll start making a list of categories that make sense to me, incorporating what's worked for you all and any other comments. I'll definitely store Travel, Christmas and Halloween separately, as those are my largest scrapping supplies. cycworker, I just took that Clutterbug test, and - oh crap - I'm a Ladybug (hangs head in shame, because it's true). I haven't read any further yet, but I will.

Where did you find the boxes you used? At Hobby Lobby. They are half off every other week with the baskets. I walked around the store with a 3x4 card and 4x6 card and stuck it into all their different baskets til I came across one that they both fit.

Thanks for posting that video hop2! I actually have several of those containers with shoes in them. I think I'll wash one of them out and order the dividers from The Container Store.

I didn’t bother with the dividers because I currently have them by kit with the 3x4 in front of the 4x6 but I might want them when I sort everything by color…

I prefer to keep my kits together. Mine are stored in the CTMH medium storage containers that are sadly discontinued.

Mine are in a bit of a state at the moment because I have managed to acquire a few new kits over the last year or so and the new ones are not sorted into the system that I have in place. I keep mine in a tray on the top section of a raskog cart and made dividers up from a thin plastic.
I usually start with deciding what side I would likely use more and then separate all of the cards into different categories and colour groups. The biggest is the journalling cards and they are all separated into colour then I have words cards, patterns and fillers and the rest are in themes so things like outdoors, school, food, Christmas.

For me, the biggest thing is to give away/toss the cards I know I won't use or I get overwhelmed. I will use my monthly subscription kit (right now I sub to Coco Daisy) but at the end of the month, I try and purge any cards I don't love. This helps keep my stash under control a bit. I typically keep my stuff sorted by manufacturer until I've used up most of a collection. Then I'll add to my stash by color and/or theme. To store my cards my favorite containers have been: www.ikea.com/us/en/p/dragan-4-piece-bathroom-set-bamboo-40222607/www.scrapbook.com/store/sbc-storage-5997.html?w=storage (but note this one is like a thick cardboard) www.target.com/p/plastic-desktop-organizer-large---made-by-design--8482-/-/A-53815197?stof=true (Plastic) I love mom's idea to go to Hobby Lobby with some cards and check out the different size options. I noticed Home Goods had some nice looking containers. I think I need to stash some cards in my purse. My digital cards a complete disaster. I need to figure out a better way to organize my digital supplies. I'm kinda hoping to tackle that in the next few months.

It says I’m a bee but it also says bees are very organized so I don’t think I can be a bee. I think I might aspire to be a bee if I could get organized.
I wait until things are almost overwhelming before dealing with them and I really need to stop that.

I sorted most by color. If they were double sided, I organized by the color I'm most likely to use. My other categories are dates, words, and grids. I have very few themed cards. I put those with my embellishments.

I’m probably not much help. I have one section for cards that can be journaled on and another for cards that have graphics/images. No organization other than that.

I have a large teal box from the Container store that holds a majority of them and I have them by line. Most of mine are PL cards, so keeping them by line is easy.

Scrapbook.com has pocket card organizers for 3x4 and 4x6 cards. 3 of those side by side would be the closest to what I store my cards in (company no longer makes the caddy). They also sell plastic dividers, I made my own with the cameo.
I've been doing PL since 2013. I've sorted and organized over and over. By now I know what I like, what I use and how I use it. Your system might change over and over. My system might seem complicated but it is what has evolved for me over time.
3x4 filler cards are patterns, no words. I sort them based on the amount of journaling room they have, then by color. So Small Journaling, Medium Journaling, Full Journaling. Then ROYGBIV within those categories. I don't do separate dividers for color as I can see the color easily.
I have a few categories that I use over and over again and tend to keep cards separate in those: Cameras/Photo, Stars/Celestial.
Quote Cards: space taken up by a large quote. I use these the least and honestly should probably just cull them.
Next are my categories. Generally these have words on them or prompts and typically there are areas on them for handwriting, but not always. Categories are: Reading Food/Eat/Dining out Loving/Currents Story/Memory/Dated Yes/Good/Happy Hard/Meh/Mood You/Me/Us/Together Adventure/Explore Travel Camping/Outdoors Friends Days of the Week Autumm Summer Spring/Winter Birthday/Celebrate TV/Movies Pets Time/AM-PM
4x6 cards are sorted by color and then a handful of themed categories: Quotes, Travel/Camping, Seasons, TV/Reading/Movies. I have way fewer 4x6 cards.

Margie - nothing wrong with being a ladybug! I'm a ladybug, too absolutely nothing wrong with being a ladybug (I'm also one) - but there's nothing wrong with any of the types of organisers...the key is to work WITH your style/personality rather than fighting it. I live with butterflies and if I tried to organise their spaces in a ladybug style...it wouldn't work for them. And the open, everything on display/visible that works best for their out of sight, out of mind style? Is visually overwhelming for me. So we compromise in public spaces and our personal spaces are set up to work best for us.

When I say bits of both - there is a video she did where she reorganized a bathroom closet using the 4 styles, and I actually didn't like the butterfly where you could SEE the soaps in the holder. Some things I think are fine to be hidden, as long as you label it. I need labels. I finally caved & asked for a label maker for Christmas. My sister in law was legit thrilled; she's a big labeller.

Just a little update: I purchased the dividers for the Container Store shoe organizers that hop2 recommended, and I really like them. I'm using one container for 3x4's and one for 4x6's. I don't have too many 4x6's yet, so I was able to add a couple of 4x6 photo storage cases that hold specific journaling cards and ephemera (like Covid stuff). I also bought the Scrapbook.com 3x4 and 4x6 tabbed dividers and used my P-Touch Label Maker to label them. I think this will work well for me. By the way, a video just popped up in my YouTube recommendations that has some more good sorting ideas: Inkie Quill video
