There was a recent thread on Two Peas about the increase in illegal immigration and the resultant humanitarian crisis. I said that illegal immigration is a leading economic indicator and that the economy must be doing better than we think. I got a lot of push back for that. Unemployment falls to 6.1% in JunePeople don't make that journey unless they know there are jobs waiting for them. The decrease in illegal immigration was the first sign the economy was weakening way back before the recession ever started. They are coming back because the jobs are too.

I'm running out the door right now so I don't have time to discuss (hopefully later), but the majority of the people crossing the border right now are children most of whom are unable to work due to their age. Why are they coming over the border in droves?? I don't think jobs are the number one reason they are coming here. I will be back later. Gotta go get a run in before the storms move into my area. I am interested in reading replies.

This is from last September when Pew first reported the uptick. It was a trickle at that point but Pew speculated that the tide was turning. Link

I am interested in reading replies. Exactly. The humanitarian crisis on our border has been orchestrated by our president, and has nothing to do with the abysmal state of our economy. Children are coming here because of his promise to use his pen to make sure they aren't sent home. Coming here jobless and knowing that the almighty Obama will take care of them is better than living in their hellhole countries. It's shameful, deceitful, and worthy of impeachment!! Besides...just last week the glowing first quarter numbers that the admin touted, showing a modest growth were drastically revised down, showing an actual shrinkage of nearly 3%! So pardon me if I take these new numbers with a grain of salt...the will most likely be quietly revised downward in a few weeks. Or economy is in the toilet, there is no sugar coating that.

Our economy isn't in the toilet. I get it that the anti-Obama crowd will go to any, ANY lengths to try to make him look bad. But the job numbers have consistently moved in an upwards direction.
On an anecdotal note, maybe we're lucky here in the Bay Area, but I don't know anyone, not a single person, who can't find a decent job at this point. Everyone is working and people are getting headhunted like crazy for BETTER jobs.

Well, actually maybe it is just me...LOL (I have been in and out of the work force) I am having zero luck finding any kind of work. I just received a rejection letter for an administrative job (that required a BA) in an area that I have experience. It is just awful. ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png)

First, those job numbers don't include the millions of people who have dropped out of the workforce entirely because they can't find a job.
Second, I agree with Lynlam on her assessment of the humanitarian crisis. And their parents are going to be given a free pass to come here as well.
Last, President Obama makes himself look bad. I can't remember the last time that there was a unanimous decision by the Supreme Court against a sitting President.

Anxiousmom, I am so sorry, especially if I sounded cavalier about people looking for work. Oh no! You didn't, this is just me being frustrated by the job report that came out today. It is so hard to believe that it paints such a rosy picture...but I also recognize that *I* am part of my own problem.

Here in Texas, we have lots and lots of jobs. Lots and lots of low-paying jobs. So I think job numbers can be misleading.

and i have 20 and 18 year old sons, oldest with an associates degree, who are desperately job hunting and one has a work study job and one works at a food pantry for 10 hour a week... the 18 year old has about 8 months experience at pizza hut but the one here won't hire him, they said they hired someone "more suited to the position"... these are guys who want to work, badly... and are having no luck

“We could really use 11.7 million new taxpayers."
I can't get past this. They are breaking the law simply being in this country. Do you honestly think they're all going to be paying taxes? Do you even think half of illegals are going to pay taxes?

It's not an argument for or against immigration, illegal or otherwise. It's just an observation that it has been and remains a leading indicator of what is happening with our economy. The next few months should be telling.
I have never understood why our government doesn't go after the companies and industries that hire illegal immigrants. If you read the news stories, it's not a big mystery where the growth sectors are. If the potential penalties and risk of enforcement outweigh the benefits, they'll stop doing it.
We've also heard time and time again, these are jobs Americans aren't willing to do. Is that true or is it anecdotal?

In California, school districts with a certain percentage of EL students will get $3000 more per student per year. This was approved by our governor this year. My district did not make that percentage. We have had furloughs, salary freezes, layoffs, and salary reductions for 7 years. At the last staff meeting of the year, we were told it will be another 7 years before we will get any kind of raise...14 years of cuts and not even one cost of living increase. We were hoping for good news with his budget revise, but it was not in our favor. Yes, I am still happy I am a teacher. I am grateful to have a job when so many do not. I am very worried about the impact on our school system with so many children starting next year. I'm curious about other states' rulings about their EL population and the school systems.

Our economy is awful and has been under Obama. I agree that those coming over illegally are doing so because they know that they can count on free protection, food, and, education, and housing from our government. We can't really take care of these in need who already live here legally and yet hundreds of thousands of illegals are welcomed, with our government fully knowing that they will be a further burden on our already failing economy. Very sad state of affairs. I don't want anyone to suffer or to be without food or medical care, but we just aren't in a position to help others until our own citizens are p[provided for.
So many things about the current state of our country and humanity in general are quite worrisome. I feel we are falling to what is written...

When I was in SoCAl we had classes half full or even full of children who didn't speak any English at all and the class and children fell very behind the standrads that are set forth because they could constantly need to stop and get a translator etc... it wasn't fair to other students.

I guess I've always figured that the Democrats want the voters and the Republicans want the cheap labor, so it's a win-win situation for both of them.
I believe Americans would be willing to do the jobs, but not for $7.00 an hour, especially at a labor-intensive job. And that's a problem because big business wants to rake even more profits by cutting costs on the backs of their employees. The Democrats seem to be okay with it because in the end they know they will win in sheer voting numbers and they will never lose power again. The Republicans are perfectly happy with those odds so long as they can sit back and let the dough roll in right now. Outsourcing, visas, illegal immigration, it's all good. Good for big business.
That's how I see it anyway, in a nutshell.

good grief! you believe those figures? they'll change 'em in a few months. They certainly aren't real. Did you also hear the part about how many counted in as having a job were part time workers?
as for the illegals coming by the 10's of thousands... that's BO signal - sent out to other countries. They even have food stamp flyers posted in places in Mexico.
why was it again that the DOJ refused to let that one family from Germany stay here? most likely cause they could support themselves and didn't apply for FS or other aid.

There are tens of thousands of very young children crossing the borders sans guardians. They are not coming here to work. This is an enormous humanitarian crisis just beginning, as the numbers of children coming is skyrocketing. I sincerely hope that there are more good jobs becoming available, but it's going to take a whole lot more than this to give me any confidance that we are really on the way to a thriving economy.

We've also heard time and time again, these are jobs Americans aren't willing to do. Is that true or is it anecdotal? *THIS* government? You mean the one led by the man who is the Constitutional lawyer who mocks that same Constitution with a pen and a phone? Puh-leeze. The Democrats in power are just not interested in keeping these illegal immigrants out of the country. They just aren't. Nancy Pelosi doesn't think there's even a problem with these young kids coming over the border. Some of the lack of will to do many of these jobs is true, and some is anecdotal. What I have seen is a poor attitude among a great many workers and a great deal of that attitude is generated by the dismal attitude from those up the chain of command. Everyone is afraid of losing their jobs and compensation is not keeping up with the cost of living. It's really hard to get up and go to work for a low wage when the employer cuts the hours per week they will schedule you - and those hours are less for a great many people since Obamacare - while demanding more from you at the same time (since there are fewer employees actually at work at any given time).
