i got these papercraft society kits and they come with the most amazing dies... so i want to get a die cutter, i think i need the roller kind. What would be the best choice to fit dies up to 4 or 5 inches? Price is HUGE that's the biggest criteria.

I would suggest the Sizzix Big Shot. I have that as well as the QuicKutz Revolution. I use both but when I have a lot of dies to cut, I use the Big Shot.

I’d recommend a Big Shot or Big Kick if you can get it on sale. However, for the very detailed dies, I’d recommend you go for something that is more expensive but that cuts the detailed dies well, such as the Gemini Jr. It’s pricier, but worth it, because it’s motorized, and it just cuts details better.

Oh and the Big Shot us about $100-120.
I believe the opening is 6" wide.

I would look for a Big Shot, you can find them used for a good price. I Googled Big Shot Machine used and see they start around $50. If you buy used, you'll need to purchase new plates but they can be found all over and aren't very expensive.
Good luck and have fun!!!

I just bought a Big Shot and hopefully will be experimenting with it next weekend. I tried a couple of cuts and did some embossing when I unpacked the machine. I bought mine thru scrapbook.com it was on sale included a small starter kit with some dies. I also bought Scrapbook.com's Magic Mat - they work beautifully!
I originally bought a Sidekick, but it was too small for what I thought I'd want to do. I'll keep it though in case I want to cut something small.

I ended up purchasing the Gemini Jr. after consulting the ladies here (I have some wrist issues) and I really love it. I have a Scan and Cut too so I resisted for ages but it's fun to play with dies. I was happy I had the motorized version when I was using it quite a bit while working on my December Daily.

I love my Vagabond. I've trouble with hand crank machines due to RA so this electric one is great for me.

The only die cut machine I have is the Quickkitz revolution for alphabets I have. Can it be used for “standard” diecuts from other brands? I didn’t think it could.

I have & recommend the Sizzix Big Kick, a workhorse that accomodates up to 6" wide dies & embossing folders. Per this thread, the Sizzix Big Shot (functionally the same as the Big Kick) was spotted at Tuesday Morning for $80 a few months ago. Also, check out big box craft stores. Yes; the QK Revolution can be used with comparable thin dies from other manufacturers.

Yes; the QK Revolution can be used with comparable thin dies from other manufacturers. Yes, I use my Revolution for wafer thin dies. It's by far my favorite machine. (For the newbies, this machine is no longer made and hasn't been made for about a decade.) Don't try to cut anything thicker than a QK die, however. The gear is plastic and will stretch and break with anything thicker. That includes some of the old Sizzix dies that have the plastic backing. They are about the same size as a QK 2x2 die, but are a tiny bit thicker. I forced the issue on my Revolution and had to replace it. But any of the newer Sizzix, Echo Park, Lawn Fawn, etc dies will all work with the Revolution. It can only accommodate dies up to 4" wide, but you can find the extended platform on ebay and can cut dies longer than 4" with that. But I understand that the clear cutting plates can be hard to find.

I got rid of my big shot and I’m so much happier with the platinum six. It folds up and is really portable. Cuts like a dream without having to use a precision plate or other plates. I think it’s great!

You have always been a part of the heist. You're only mad now because you don't like your cut.

I think it’s great! I just ordered the Platinum 6. I love my Big Shot but I use it often enough that it stays out on my craft table. It has a huge footprint and I really want to reclaim that space. I’ve heard good things about The Platinum so I’m excited but I can say that I’ve used my Big Shot for 10 years and I wouldn’t have ordered a new machine if space want an issue.
