One yacht down... Glub glub glub... As @dottyscrapper points out a few post below, the sailor was released by the judge! 😊 In court, the sailor(Ukrainian) explained that the owner of the ship is in charge of the production of weapons that are currently hitting his country. When he saw the footage of the Russian cruise missiles hitting civilian targes like apartment buildings and a Kindergarten, the sailor said he was moved to act. He said that he knew the missile was produced by the company. That's why he took revenge on the owner. It caused only material damage, he explained, never physical. The owner of this ship is a criminal who makes his living selling weapons and now they kill Ukrainians," he told the police when they came to arrest him. www.rawstory.com/oligarch-yacht-partially-sunk/Only partially sunk, too bad.

He was released later according to this report from a local Majorca newspaper. He was an engineer on the yacht and had worked for the owner for 10 years. He's now left and returned to Poland and ultimately make his way home to Ukraine.

We really really have to figure out how to get rid of this guy.
The story resurfaced yesterday and today about the one thing the trump campaign cared about and wanted changed in the 2016 Republican Platform was the Republicans support for Ukraine and sending them weapons. That was the only thing.

From the Washington Post - July 2016..
“The Trump campaign worked behind the scenes last week to make sure the new Republican platform won’t call for giving weapons to Ukraine to fight Russian and rebel forces, contradicting the view of almost all Republican foreign policy leaders in Washington.
Throughout the campaign, Trump has been dismissive of calls for supporting the Ukraine government as it fights an ongoing Russian-led intervention. Trump’s campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, worked as a lobbyist for the Russian-backed former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych for more than a decade.
Still, Republican delegates at last week’s national security committee platform meeting in Cleveland were surprised when the Trump campaign orchestrated a set of events to make sure that the GOP would not pledge to give Ukraine the weapons it has been asking for from the United States.”

"Facebook and Twitter removed two anti-Ukrainian “covert influence operations” over the weekend, one tied to Russia and another with connections to Belarus, the companies said. One of the operations, a propaganda campaign featuring a website pushing anti-Ukraine talking points, was an offshoot of a known Russian disinformation operation. A Facebook spokesperson said it used computer-generated faces to bolster the credibility of fake columnists across several platforms, including Instagram. The other campaign used hacked accounts to push similar anti-Ukraine propaganda and was tied to a known Belarusian hacking group. Disinformation experts warned that Russia is expected to continue to try to manipulate narratives about Ukraine — most notably around the claims made by Russian President Vladimir Putin. " About f#$Iing time. Your platforms are being used to lie and propagandize. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CHANGE THE ALGORITHM AND FIND THE MIND HACKERS. www.nbcnews.com/tech/internet/facebook-twitter-remove-disinformation-accounts-targeting-ukrainians-rcna17880

There are cracks showing... Two of Russia's billionaires call for peace in Ukraine 2022/2/27 16:46 (GMT) 2/27 17:52 (GMT)updated By Guy Faulconbridge and Catherine Belton LONDON (Reuters) - Two Russian billionaires, Mikhail Fridman and Oleg Deripaska, called for an end to the conflict triggered by President Vladimir Putin's assault on Ukraine, with Fridman calling it a tragedy for both countries' people. *** One of Fridman's long-term partners, Pyotr Aven, attended a meeting at the Kremlin with Putin and 36 other major Russian businessmen last week, the Kremlin said. Another Moscow billionaire told Reuters on condition of anonymity that the war was going to be a catastrophe. "It is going to be catastrophic in all senses: for the economy, for relations with the rest of the world, for the political situation," the billionaire said. nordot.app/870679777124040704Deripaska was involved with Giuliani.. No doubt seeing their wealth decreasing enormously as each day goes by. The first item on my feed when I checked this morning is the Russian ruble is in freefall, Gazprom shares dropped 37% and all other shares in Russian companies in similar state. (Just for the heck of it, I plugged in one ruble to USD on my phone’s exchange app; one ruble = $.01. A penny. Even less in euro. No wonder widespread bank runs by Russian citizens are expected starting today.) Their central bank’s interest rate went up to 20% (!) which will hobble Russian industries in financing. Hyperinflation being predicted. Putin’s war chest of $643B has been severely restricted because half is held in foreign currencies abroad, and US and Europe forbade all their banks from transacting any business with Russia. News say Putin will be meeting with his officials to discuss the economy. Yeah, I bet. So, yes, contrary to naysayers, sanctions do work, especially when the West bands together in unity.

And more recently...
"Asked about his deference to the Kremlin leader, Mr. Trump responded, “He’s been complimentary of me.”
This week, as his renomination nears, Mr. Trump announced that he was pulling a third of American troops from Germany. He declared in recent days that he had never raised with Mr. Putin, during a recent phone conversation, American intelligence indicating that Russia was paying a bounty to the Taliban for the killing of American soldiers in Afghanistan, because he distrusted the information from his own intelligence agencies. Nor has he issued warnings about what price, if any, Mr. Putin would pay for seeking to influence the 2020 election or pushing disinformation about the coronavirus. American intelligence agencies say Russia is trying both."

Can we not clutter this thread with a rehash of a zillion tweets and old articles that Trump was a dumbass - it's been very informative and useful thread. We all know Trump was stupid - go start a hey let's all remember how stupid Trump was on another thread, especially as all these embedded tweets are garbage on the mobile app. Let's keep this on the current situation in Ukraine.

For those who follow aviation, this is an interesting time. Hats off to all the pilots and aircraft controls around the world now trying to reroute all these planes around Russia - not exactly a small landmass - haven't seen flightaware ever look quite like this (zoom out and into Europe/Asia and you'll see all the planes being directed around Russia as airspace has closed): flightaware.com/

If you understand Switzerland’s especially (and Sweden’s, they are sending defensive weapons) history of neutrality, this is big.

I can’t imagine being a citizen there are being faced with this when you go to get money from an ATM. 🥺Just like Stalin, a lot of his people are already suffering, and he compounds it from his ivory tower.

Yes, it’s relevant, but perhaps you could post it on the Putin and Republicans thread instead? Or start a new one? As a suggestion, the statement he put out today is OK, but maybe previous statements and actions could be on a different thread? I think her request to keep this thread to current events is reasonable. The thread is already at 15 pages and things are happening quickly. I enjoy your posts and your perspective. My intent is respectful, I hope that comes across clearly. This isn’t directed at you, it's more of a general statement. Some peas might not be aware that anyone trying to read posts from an older device, tweets and videos really slow things down. I have an older iPad that I’ve mostly stopped using here because some threads take forever to load.
