You are right and that makes the strong case to move to EV’s sooner rather then later. I have been saying since the oil embargo of the 1970’s we need to make ourselves energy independent and we now have the technology to do so. So let’s get cracking instead of making up the excuses and pandering to big oil & gas. You are right and that makes the strong case to move to EV’s sooner rather then later.
I agree with you about making ourselves energy independent but EV's are NOT practical for EVERYONE in the United States and we can never go completely EV like the progressives want! It may work for big cities but it will never work for rural or semi-rural areas, farmers, etc. Maybe hybrid cars but not strictly electric vehicles. I imagine the term “it’s NOT practical for EVERYONE” was used a lot throughout history about something and in the end they found that it was indeed practical for everyone. And it’s not a “progressive” thing but progress through technology that exists today that did not exist 5, 10, 15 years ago. And will be made better as the technology continues to evolve. In other words we don’t know the full potential of EV’s yet so how can claim they are NOT practical for EVERYONE? The only viable option to make this country energy independent is through clean renewable energy. And that is not a progressive idea but just plain common sense.

I'm still hung up on why we can't pressure the oil companies to lower gas prices rather than reaping record high profits at the expense of every day Americans. I understand that they may be unable/unwilling to drill more for a variety of reasons, but they could choose to take less profit, right?

Not with troops on the ground there wouldn't be . The EU doesn't work that way. Every member country is autonomous as far as their country's military and their country's defence is concerned. It's only as members of NATO they could come to the defence of each other. Sweden in a neutral country. There are absolutely grounds for active help and such help would be mandatory. It's called the mutual defense clause and dates back to the Treaty of Lisbon. ( x) If Putin invades an EU country, all other EU countries are obligated to come to its assistance immediately, period. That would mean moving troops from France, Spain, Germany and elsewhere to wherever it's needed. Thanks for the clarification. I hadn't really read the update made in 2009 although it does not say that the assistance should be military in nature though only that they have to offer assistance. From the way I understood it to be, the role of the EU is limited, as the exact type of assistance required would be agreed directly between states. Nevertheless, it could help to facilitate and coordinate the process. It does look as if it's not a given that member states would put troops on the ground in another member state but could offer alternative assistance weapons etc. and still abide by the treaty. It doesn't really work in the same way as being a member of NATO does.

Yes, in that WSB panel that was posted, they said as much - that the US stopping buying Russian crude will not really be something that exerts actual influence on him (because of that alliance, and how relatively little we buy) there are many other highly effective ways they have leverage. (But that on principle, they should work towards not buying it) There seems a decent likelihood they’ll lose the house, and they might lose the senate in the mid terms, so the thought of (some possibly compromised) republicans calling shots on this conflict, concerns me. It’s complicated. Im ok with personally making a sacrifice on principle, I have the luxury of being able to do so, but I know many people who this will squeeze their household budget horribly. So I’d like my principled sacrifice to be both effective and not be something that also knowingly hurts those who can least afford it, - not without exploring options first, at least. Why would Republicans care about this? Because they know that when gas prices and consumer goods go even higher because of the embargo Democrats will be blamed. It doesn’t matter how many times people here say Biden has no control over gas prices. You can turn blue in the face repeating that over and over. At the end of the day, voters equate inflation and higher gas prices to the administration in power. That’s the reality. So no one here should be in the least bit surprised when those two issues will be made front and center when the battles for the House and Senate begin. I meant, republicans making calls on the Russia/Ukraine conflict specifically - that concerns me, sorry I didn’t articulate myself well. Being aggravated when people are flippant of the local hurt that eventuate, will do that. 😏

BP and another company, possibly Shell withdrew their investments in Russia at an enormous loss. So the oil companies are willing to make some sacrifices. Maybe there’s something the administration could negotiate with US companies to lower prices?

DH frequently reminds me that corporations have a fiduciary duty to their shareholders to maximize profits, and that's what they're doing. But it's galling that the GOP will then turn around and blame Democrats for high prices when it's the free market capitalism they all love so much that's hurting everyone's pocketbooks. It would be nice if prominent Democrats and others with a platform would call out both the GOP and the oil companies for this, but they won't. Regulating energy prices would be seen as an assault on the free market - a step closer to that dreaded socialism - and then that would be the next tool they use to bludgeon us.

Some excellent points here www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/03/08/biden-energy-ban-republicans-gas-prices/?itid=hp_opinionsOpinion: Ending Russian oil imports, Biden anticipates disingenuous GOP attacks By Jennifer Rubin Columnist President Biden on Tuesday rolled out a new ban on oil and natural gas from Russia. What was noticeable was the extent to which he anticipated and rebutted Republicans’ partisan attacks. Just as the administration revealed Russia’s plans to use false-flag tactics so as to disarm them, Biden is preparing the public for the avalanche of disingenuous attacks sure to come. First, Biden made clear that while the United States can ban energy imports, the European Union is in a far different place, given the extent of its reliance on Russian energy. This is not a sign of “disunity” as some media and GOP pundits insist whenever the U.S. and E.U. are not in lockstep. This is reality. However, Britain joined the United States in declaring it would end Russian oil imports by next year. And the E.U. did take an extraordinary step. The Post reports, “The European Commission on Tuesday presented a plan to cut Russian gas imports by two thirds this year, steeply reducing — but not severing — energy ties to Moscow. The proposal … is a dramatic shift,” given that 40 percent of the E.U.’s gas and 25 percent of its oil comes from Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine already spelled the death of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline; now, he is accelerating Europe’s energy independence. Once again, Putin’s gross miscalculation has had the opposite of his desired result. Second, Biden also conceded up front that his ban would not be cost-free. “The decision today is not without cost here at home. Putin’s war is already hurting American families at the gas pump,” he said. “I’m going to do everything I can to minimize Putin’s price hike here at home.” However, he also warned oil companies against price-gouging. Finally, and most important politically, Biden addressed the already prevalent and false accusation from Republicans that his administration has somehow hamstrung energy extraction domestically. He pointed out that 90 percent of drilling is on private lands, and of the 10 percent on government-owned land, more than 9,000 permits have been granted but sit unused. In short, don’t blame the federal government if domestic producers are not tapping existing supplies.
We should not be so naive to think Republicans will restrain themselves from making baseless accusations. In Republicans’ right-wing media bubble, Democrats are the enemy of cheap domestic oil. Therefore, while Republicans encouraged the import ban, the price hikes must be Biden’s fault. See how that works? This time, Biden tried to flip the script on Republicans and also Democratic friends of oil and coal such as Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.). Biden explained that the one surefire way to reduce oil costs is to shift to renewable energy, freeing us from dependence on both domestic and imported oil. “Loosening environmental regulations or pulling back clean energy investment won’t lower energy prices for families,” he said. “B ut transforming our economy to run on [electric vehicles], powered by clean energy, will mean that in the future, no one has to worry about gas prices.” Instead of expanding oil fields, we should be “racing toward” the goal of energy independence. We’ll see if that has any impact on Manchin, who nixed the Build Back Better package with its major green energy component. In sum, ending U.S. energy imports from Russia won’t be the body blow some politicians seem to think it is. Nevertheless, in a war for the hearts and minds of the public, even symbolic actions are critical. As Biden reiterated, the war is not going as Putin planned and while he might occupy Ukraine, he’ll never defeat Ukraine’s people nor recover economically so long as the West continues to wreak havoc on Russia’s entire system. Adding to Putin’s troubles even minimally was the right choice for Biden; preparing for the GOP’s dishonest attacks, sadly, is essential these days.

www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/03/08/fact-sheet-united-states-bans-imports-of-russian-oil-liquefied-natural-gas-and-coal/But we are united with our Allies and partners in working together to reduce our collective dependence on Russian energy and keep the pressure mounting on Putin, while at the same taking active steps to limit impacts on global energy markets and protect our own economies.
U.S. oil and gas production is approaching record highs, while thousands of drilling permits on federal lands go unused. Federal policies are not limiting the production of oil and gas. To the contrary, the Biden Administration has been clear that in the short-term, supply must keep up with demand, at home and around the world while we make the shift to a secure clean energy future.
Oil and gas companies, and the finance firms that back them, should not use Putin’s war as an excuse for excess price increases or padding profits, and, as major energy company leaders have themselves said, they have the resources and incentives they need to further increase production in the United States.
In the long run, the way to avoid high gas prices is to speed up – not slow down – our transition to a clean energy future. We cannot drill our way out of dependence on a global commodity controlled in part by foreign nations and their leaders, including Putin

I know it, I work for a company beholden entirely to its shareholders, so I’m with you on the frustration of this. No matter how many times I point out inflation and gas prices are globally high (regardless of what kind of political party that is governing in any given country) it falls on deaf ears. Maybe a course on how gas prices work should be required to be able to drive a car? Tongue in cheek, of course - but so many people really don’t understand it, and should if they’re going to drive one.

Rep Scalise former's new mouth piece on the perfect call... I'm going to put one tweet here but go to the link to read the other responses, he got hammered! House minority whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) got called out for lying about Donald Trump's infamous phone call to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky. A reporter asked Scalise whether he had changed his view on Trump's attempted extortion scheme against Zelensky, for which he was impeached a first time in 2019 by the House but later acquitted by a Republican-led Senate, and the Louisiana Republican inaccurately described the call between the two world leaders. www.rawstory.com/steve-scalise-ukraine/

Millions of people live in rural areas. Are you going to stand in line for a charge station if your electric car dies during your commute? How long does it take to charge your car? Are there going to be electric airplanes, helicopters or aircraft carriers, tanks or other military vehicles? Do you really think people are going to never travel from state to state or across country ever again? Are we just going to stop using boats, ocean liners/cruise ships? I’m sure there are circumstances where EV’s are practical. Plain common sense dictates that EV’s are NOT practical for everyone or everything or every situation.

Wouldn’t it be great if trump would stfu and be respectful to Biden’s presidency the way Obama was to him? I’m sure Obama had plenty to say about trump but he kept quiet. Trump isn’t capable of not being the center of attention. Such is life when you are sucked in by a narcissist. And what he says stroll has the capability to affect the country—and the world.
