I knew that Yana is from Ukraine, but somehow I hadn't put that all together with the Russian invasion until I saw her Instagram post today (below). Luckily, she says that she and her family are not in immediate harm's way due to their location. In her stories, she linked some charities that people can donate to for Ukrainian relief, but I thought that another possibly unique thing that us Peas could do to help her individually is to watch her videos and not skip ads. Although it's a drop in the bucket, I'm sure having extra income in a scary time like this could be helpful to her and her family. I plan to put on one of her playlists in the background and just let it play. You could even mute it if you don't want to be actively watching. Here's her channel. I hope this doesn't offend anyone, I'm not trying to be flippant about the conflict or her situation, but instead of feeling powerless, I thought this was some small thing I could do. YMMV, but I thought I'd mention it if anyone wants to join in. ETA: She posted on her stories a few hours ago that they were instructed to go to a bomb shelter for the night since they think there will be bombing. I can't even imagine. https://www.instagram.com/p/CaXzpGoOJm6

Yana is one of my favorite card makers. I don’t follow her on Instagram so thanks for posting her message.

Thank you, my heart breaks for her and her family. It hits closer to home when you "know" someone, even if they don't know you. She just answered a question I asked her last week about one of her videos and I bought something I was on the fence about because of her inspiring cards.
You know 2Pease 1000 better than I do, just wondered that you don't want this on NSBR with far more people who will see it?

I agree about it hitting closer to home when you "know" someone, even if you don't know them. I don't know if I would say I know 2Peas better, but you are welcome to post it over on NSBR if you want! I almost never post over there and I was sorta hesitant to even post this because I was afraid people might think I was trivializing something serious, so I figured I'd stay on the side of the board where I'm most familiar.

I hear you! I don’t think caring and worrying about someone trivializes how huge this is. I posted about something else over there but pointed to this thread. Thank you again.

Actually her last story on IG said that they had to go and shelter, the alarm sounded at midnight, they are expecting bombing. Nothing since this.
If you look it a map Russia pretty much invaded the whole country at this point.

This saddens me so much that for some people humans are so disposable. Like if they are not real people with families, feelings, people that love them, etc.

I saw a suggestion that another way to help crafters in Ukraine is to buy digital files from them through Etsy. It's a little extra passive income and if you're shopping for patterns or svgs or files anyway... http://instagram.com/p/CaaGQiwJ1b5

Thanks for sharing. I hadn't realized that Yana still lived in Ukraine until I read this. I knew she was from there but I assumed she lived in the US or UK for some reason.

She lived in Arizona for a while (some years ago). I think she came to the States to do work for Spellbinders (based in AZ). I started following her at the tail end of her stay in the US, so I heard her talk about her move back to Ukraine, but I don't know any more details. So that could be the reason why you thought she lived here!

I assume that her work visa expired and moved back to Ukraine.

I am not a digital papercrafter, but I did purchase some digital cross-stitch patterns.

Thank you, my heart breaks for her and her family. It hits closer to home when you "know" someone, even if they don't know you. Totally! I watch the news and the reality of it doesn’t hit the same as when your “friend” is involved. Yana has been in my thoughts for days. I keep going back to Instagram checking for her updates just so I know she’s ok.

I watch the news and the reality of it doesn’t hit the same as when your “friend” is involved. Yana has been in my thoughts for days. I keep going back to Instagram checking for her updates just so I know she’s ok. Me too - and her blog. I’d just asked a question on a youtube video, which had spurred me to buy something I’d been on the fence about, plus a set of dies she designed. She answered the question and asked me to let her know what I found out. (She doesn’t know me.) And the next day or so was war. The juxtaposition is surreal. One day normal-ish life, the next… I bought a rope basket with lid on Etsy from a lovely person in the Ukraine, who sweetly had included a string of beads that spelled my first name. Two letters were reversed and I loved that - that she’d be giving and creative in a language she didn’t knoow. I sent her a message, haven’t heard back yet.

There’s also a simple way to support them since sellers have caught on that people want to help. In the Etsy search box typing “Ukraine” will bring up a drop-down menu. At the very bottom is “Ukraine shops.” For some of the sellers Etsy is their only income and they can’t ship. ETA - It didn’t work when I went back to Etsy but did ten minutes ago.

Oh jeez. Instagram. Yana is looking for someone in Poland to take in her mother and her mother’s two cats, and her mother isn’t well - cancer survivor. Such a helpless feeling not being able to do anything to help.

Here's another shortcut link to items you buy to support artists in Ukraine, posted by someone in the Etsy forums. ETA: It looks like automatically put Ukraine shops on vacation and only sellers who can actually fulfill orders will have turned their shops back on. And it also looks like Etsy is not charging them the usual seller fees at this time. Some people have been worried about whether Ukrainian shop owners will actually be able to access their PayPal funds - fingers crossed on that. I don't know.

Yana posted what she and her husband are doing to try to help, and asked that her affiliate links be used if anyone wants to help her directly.
There are a number of animal welfare organizations and shelters in border countries helping as well if anyone wants to donate. I can’t locate the list I had right now and have to leave, but will look later, or google animal welfare ukraine - lots of articles and organizations mentioned.

I follow Yana on IG and Youtube. I can't imagine what they are going through in Ukraine. I like the idea of purchasing from the Ukraine Etsy stores that have digital downloads. Thank you for sharing joblackford!
