Do you have any "rules" for yourself in regards to scrapbooking or scrapbook shopping, which we all know are two different hobbies... I try not to "encourage" manufacturers by avoiding buying any collections with a ton of pink in them, and I have girls. There's just so much of it... I have pretty much sworn off 6 by 6 paper pads. I like having all the papers in a collection for $4 or $5 but find them annoying to actually use on 12 by 12 pages. I have pretty much have decided not to buy birthday lines anymore. I will make the birthday persons layouts using their favorite colors. Unless someone comes out with a "happy birthday to me" line (and it's not pink) that I can use on myself then I might change my mind. What about you? All in good fun of course, no debates on the collapse of the scrapbooking industry or consumerism needed

I refuse to scrap with thin paper. I hate it and it just makes me so mad. If a manufacture can't bother using good paper then I can't be bothered to buy it.
I never, ever buy full theme collections. Nope. I dont think I have ever loved an entire collection enough to pay $14 for a full kit.
I dont buy 4x6 paper pads but will buy 6x6 pads. I love using them on my PL spreads.
I hate heckagons and won't use them or buy them willingly.

I can’t think of any rules I really have. I do have a strong aversion to butterflies and the color purple. I tend to be really annoyed by cult favorites and will stay away from products that have rabid fans (like Tim Holtz. The fandom just irks me 🤷🏻♀️) (I avoid AE’s groupie echo chambers to preserve my affinity for her for this reason (lol)).

I don't call them rules, per se, but...
I like "real" colours--the six in the traditional rainbow, plus brown, black, white. I don't use many pastel papers or cs, and of those, pink is my LEAST go-to colour.
I like new lines that I can see fitting in with the lines I already have. They don't have to repeat everything, but it is nice to see how they would work together. Or else, be REALLY different: surprise me! wake me up to the possibility of scrapping in a new way.
I will pay more for something that is offered at an LSS as opposed to on line or in a big box store. I believe that one of the reasons these are so few and far between is that their customers were pulled away by less expensive products.
I don't need to be smothered with attention, but I like to know there is someone in the store who can answer my questions. I don't mind one or two suggestions for some add on's, but I don't need to be snowed under b them.
I am more likely to buy something that is displayed in a pleasing manner and not stuffed into a narrow slot or shelf somewhere. I DO buy on line, and to follow this tenet through, the on-line display has to show me this product at its best.
I like to feel like I can breathe in the spaces between the shelves, and not be afraid that if I step back to look I will be knocking something down with my butt.....
Here in Alberta I am lucky enough to be able to meet these conditions in several different stores. I really hope we can keep them here.

I don't have any hard set rules. Generally, I stick to buying papers and rarely embellishments unless it's an amazing deal. I'm pretty basic. I'm happy with paper and diecuts from my dies and machine. Same kind of rule with stamps. I know what I like. Manufacturers like Everyday Explorers and Paper Person are more my style. Higher in price; yes, but they will be used repeatedly.
Avoid the messy things like mixed media. I would love to give it a try but I don't have a dedicated room. Definitely not a priority to buy anytime soon.
Use what I have for storage or try being creative like buying items from the hardware store or Dollar Tree. I drool over some scrapbook rooms. I'd love a stream-lined organization system. Then I think of all the pretty papers I'd rather buy and that always wins!
One that I suck at is order photos every month.
ETA: Ink pads; also look for minis. My stamping is very inconsistent the only exception is black.

I never, ever buy full theme collections. Nope. I dont think I have ever loved an entire collection enough to pay $14 for a full kit. You need to make a trip to Utah for an Echo Park Warehouse sale. Never say never. That's one of the few places I bought a few embellishments.
I hate heckagons and won't use them or buy them willingly. Oh my heck, what's your deal with heckagons anyway? I actually do like them, but I don't think I've used them much.
(I avoid AE’s groupie echo chambers to preserve my affinity for her for this reason (lol)). This reminded me of some scrappers I can't follow because I can't relate to their perfect photos and amazing lives. I get it, most are trying to sell product, but it's the ones who look like they use stock photos or over saturated photos. I don't know, the perfectionism gets to be too much.

Ha! I have no clue but I hate them....in scrapbook supplies, in home decor, basically wherever they show up! Give me a circle, a heart, a square, any other shape!

This is a really fun thread!! Let me see...here are some rules. No more thin paper, ever. mom , I am with you. Suppliers use crap paper? Guess you don't want my money. Yuk and grrrrr... However...hexagons?? LOVE THEM. Why?? Because I must look at all things BEES. If it's got a bee theme, a honey theme, a honeycomb, ect...I am sunk. Perhaps not cartoony bees so much. But other bees, yes. NOT however this super creepy bee from Hero Arts. heroarts.com/blogs/hero-arts-blog/bee-the-queen What even is that? It's not a bee, it is the stuff of nightmares. I don't attend (in the before times) short crops. If you are going to invite me to a crop, it had better be an all day thing or I won't go. I hate it when people are like, "We're scrapping from 1-3, please join us!" What?? No. Just no. I need basically 8 hrs or it's not worth hauling my crap. And don't even get me started on people who bring children to crops. If I think there is going to be children, I won't go either. I go to crops to get time away from children, not to mind yours. I don't let other people touch my markers or go through my paper. I will lend out or find you almost anything, including Cricut cartridges, stamps, dies, etc...No problem. I will also give paper away, if say, someone needs a sheet of blue. But I start to freak when I see my paper riffled through. I don't get to have beverages next to me when I scrapbook because I am a klutz.

Then I was hooked. She uses 6x6 pads in really creative ways. And sometimes I actually prefer the designs on a smaller scale.

I prefer thin paper for making paper lollies - it is so much better on the hands for scrunching and distressing the paper. I actually go out of my way to buy thin paper - the single sided AC sheets are my go-to! When I can get them on sale 10/$2 at Joann I buy a stack! Any other companies you know of that make thin paper? I would love to know!

Weekend crops that don’t leave room for me to actually scrapbook. The ones where they have challenges and make n’takes and games etc. I never seem to get enough peace to get anything done. I’m off to a 4 day retreat next month. A retreat. Where I can do whatever I wish whenever I wish. No schedule.

I agree with so much of what's been said! Don't touch my stuff, I'll share willingly but I WILL HAND IT TO YOU! Strange, probably but I don't care. LOL
I no longer just buy paper that I like, I have so much that is "too pretty to cut" so now I only buy what works with the pictures I have set out to work on. I also no longer buy ribbon or anything that is messy, I don't like either. I love ribbon on other people's layouts but for some reason can't make it work on mine.

These are some great "rules". I love a 6x8 paper pad but had also quit buying 6x6 until 2 days ago when I ordered one and broke my own rule and picked up Traci Reed's Echo Park line "New Day". I hate giant chipboard, die cuts, & ephemera (seriously, why is everything so big these days?). They rarely work for me so if that's all that's left, they get tossed in the donation box and I don't feel bad about it. If a pack is only larger die cuts I'll just skip it. If I'm buying a collection and it has puffy stickers, I always buy them. I can't help it.

I am another that doesn’t care for hexagons. Not crazy about diamonds or triangles either. Give me a nice rectangle, square or maybe a circle.
I only buy patterned paper with a specific purpose in mind.
I print my photos when I am ready to scrap them.

I am another one who doesn't want others touching my goodies. My daughter is old enough that I don't have to worry about her but now we have a wild man cat who would love to get into my stuff. Also stopped buying 6x6 pads. I have dies I could use to cut the larger sheets down if I want and also PL pocket size dies. Don't buy mixed media type stuff any more, I use it so seldom the stuff usually dries up before I get to it. Crops for me are more of a social time, I get more scrapbooking done at home and prefer to do it alone. I have come to the conclusion I am scrapbooking for myself so I do what I like. My daughter can have some of the albums, if not I will gladly keep them. I've kept all my dies and punches and I rarely throw anything out. I always have bought what I loved, but I do have too much. I will never tell any non scrapbooker how much I have spent on this hobby or how much stuff I actually have.

I make myself use some sort of embellishment on each layout. Doesn't matter if it is buttons, brads, beads, ribbon, washi tape, paper clips, or something else. Just have to use something. Gotta use up my stash somehow.

I am taking a photo(s) with my camera or phone. << This is non-negotiable. I don't care if your fancy camera is better than mine. I learned years ago, decades ago... "just let one person take the group photo(s) with their device and they can give everyone else a copy". The copy/copies NEVER are given to the others, no matter how many times one asks for them. Lesson learned. The person in question can/will try to shame me, over-rule me, act superior, dictate, try to get their way....I am taking my own photos! The time we spend going back and forth about it, 50 photos could have been taken.
If I love, love, love, something (a sheet of stickers, a piece of paper).....I buy more than one.
Check letter/alphabet stickers for the needed quantity of often used letters, then buy triple or quadruple what I think I'll need.
In one ear, out the other....with the comments >> "you must have too much time on your hands", "must be nice to have so much extra time to do that".
It will get done, when it gets done.

I'm not sure if I have scrappy rules really...
trying to use what I have and only buy as needed rather than because it's on sale or I like it.
I don't need one of each...especially if I'm not sure how much I will actually use it.

I very rarely buy anything at full price. In fact I can't remember the last time I paid full price for anything. Luckily my two favourite digital stores have 50% off sales every week. And their new releases every Friday are 20%, sometimes more depending on how much you buy. I pretty much always buy the whole kit (papers and elements). It's very rare for me to just buy the papers. I won't buy any Christmas kit that uses traditional Christmas colours. I celebrate Christmas in summer, so I want my Christmas kits to be nice and bright. Definitely no forest green! I will never ever pay for a font. There are too many fonts I can get for free. And now I have a request: Paper scrapbooking companies who are now offering their products as a digital kit...... firstly YAY, thank you! Secondly, you need to fix your pricing. I can buy a digital kit/bundle for $7, there's no way I'm going to pay $27 for yours, even if it is Vicki Boutin.

This is a great thread!
I will only let myself buy embellishments if I know I will use enough of it to justify the price, which is usually 80% or more of the pack. There are times I literally count hos many pieces I would really use if I'm not sure.
I can only buy discounted paper if I would be willing to buy that same paper at full price. If I don't like it enough to pay full price, then I don't like it enough on sale to add to my stash.
If I find a paper I absolutely adore, that is something I can use on every other page, I can buy multiples. If I really love both sides of a paper (and will actually use both sides, vs just staring at the pretty side that is not my style) I can buy two of them.
I cannot buy new ink colours without determining if it fills a gap in my stash. It's ok if I buy something based on the images I see online and it turns out to be a closer than expected match to something I already own, but I cannot buy any more of the same shade of mint or pink just because I think they're pretty.

My scrappy rules are no crazy cropping of photos first and foremost. I am still dealing with my coluzzled wedding photos.
Rule number 2 is make sure I have my items for a page so I don't finish the page and realize later I had the perfect paper or embellishment
My 3rd rule is use product on a page as I can to use it up. For example all the make a wish birthday stickers: when I do a birthday layout blowing out candles use the sticker! If I bought 30th birthday stuff use it when 30th birthday rolls around. If child visits Santa use the Santa stuff. Dont leave it languishing in a box.
Lastly as a theme scrapper use patterned paper whenever possible. Cardstock backgrounds are a missed opportunity to use my stash.

I'm another one not a fan of hexagons, triangles, and diamonds. Well shapes, I love diamonds, LOL.
I never buy thin paper or cheap paper pads.
My "rule" is, if there is one paper in a collection I know I'll never use, I immediately put it in a 12x12 pocket for using as a base for smaller pieces of paper that will be covered up or if it's white background, I'll use it to mat photos.
