My 2 cents, not that anyone asked. I think making jokes about violence (even a man slapping another man) of any kind to be distasteful and not my thing. Does that mean I need to "unwad my panties?" Absolutely not, and anyone who says that about someone who is not impressed by jokes and memes about the Oscar's incident really ought to consider checking themselves. It's ok for us to have differing opinions and that is NO REASON to put someone else down. Full stop. Thank you.

Even strong, independent women can be extremely insecure about things. While being called GI Jane might appear to be a nod at being strong by some, the person on the receiving end might not think the same—especially if their baldness is a result of a disease. And maybe you need to remember, too, that there was a human being at the receiving end of that slap. Will’s actions were despicable. Jada was made the butt of a joke just like thousands of celebs in the show’s history. Just because she and Will are too thin-skinned to either ignore it or laugh it off doesn’t make her a victim. She herself said baldness empowered her. And let’s not forget that Will was laughing at the joke so obviously, he himself found it funny. These two people have egos so large and live in bubbles so privileged that if reality grew a hand and smacked them in their faces, all they can do is run to Facebook and Instagram and whinge like the navel-gazing, overindulged brats that they are. In my many, many years as a prosecutor I have met dozens upon dozens of REAL victims. I can assure you that Jada doesn’t even come close to being one. Not by any stretch of the imagination. Not once have I defended him, in fact, I’ve spoken out against what he did. Unfortunately there are comments being attributed to things I’ve not said or even thought. I’m not on a side in regards to Jada/Will/Chris. I’ve stated that Chris is, has been, and likely always will be a douche. I’ve also stated at the same time that I don’t advocate the violence that Will displayed. I’ve also stated that Jada can certainly speak for herself. My focus on this thread and the Oscars thread has been on the lack of accountability for women being degenerated in public setting. I just don’t think it’s funny. Given some of the reasoning and commentary here, people who have diseases need to grow thicker skin so as to be “in on the joke” and lighten up. Or is that only in effect if they’re millionaires? Or celebrity? Or a nominated Supreme Court Justice? Where does it stop? Women are constantly being told to “lighten up” “it’s only a joke” “you’re too sensitive” “you’re too emotional” if they speak up when being made fun of, denigrated or there is a “joke” at their expense. Women are expected to take this kind of crap and “toughen up” “shake it off” ignore it or exhibit no emotions and suck it up. That’s just not funny at all and it’s bullshit.

So…what’s your position then? Women should never be the subject of comedians? Chris was asking for a reckoning? What? You keep writing women being “degenerated” on two threads. What exactly does that mean? Or do you mean denigrated? If you personally don’t find jokes about women funny, then you don’t. I think some of them are hilarious. You’ve never seen comediennes making fun of men? It goes both ways. You seem to be under the impression that women should be off limits and protected from any unpleasantness. I don’t subscribe to this infantilizing of women, especially black women, like we’re some delicate creatures completely devoid of brain power and agency. Just because Jada has alopecia does not make her some sort of vulnerable, disabled individual. It doesn’t make her precious. Heck, I have psoriasis with chronic pain and 100% deaf in one ear. None of that makes me disabled, and I sure as hell don’t think I should be treated with kid gloves just because I’m a woman with a medical condition. There’s no power imbalance here just because one of the three is a woman. These three people are all black, all multimillionaires, all influential, and all have platforms where the Smiths could have taken their displeasure and duked it out with Chris to their hearts’ content. You say you don’t approve of the violence yet you keep framing your posts in two threads like Jada was the victim. In case you didn’t know, in California, this wasn’t just assault, which is ATTEMPT at use of force. This was battery, which is ACTUAL physical contact and injury by use of force or violence. There was an actual victim here and his name is Chris Rock, not Jada Smith.

I feel the same way about comedians who make fun of weakness, mental capacities, handicaps, ethnicity—it’s too hurtful and personal. When is it too much? There are no consequences.

Well, of course making fun of the handicapped, etc and those who are vulnerable is not acceptable. Every reasonable person with an ounce of decency knows that. Just like everything else in entertainment, there are limits to what the public will tolerate. You’re expanding this to something that it isn’t. This was an awards show where comedy IS part of the production. That’s precisely why just about every host is a comedian. Chris didn’t joke about a handicapped individual; he joked about a woman who’s bald and proud to be bald. She was so proud of it, she posted about it on Instagram. And how ironic that the husband of the woman who you believe was denigrated was himself not so respectful of women. You’ve never read about Will writing in his memoir that he went “full ghetto hyena” on women in his quest for “rampant sexual intercourse” after a break-up? Charming. Must have been uplifting for the women he had sex with to know someone went full ghetto hyena on them as if they’re nothing more than commodities to be used. You’ve never read of Jada taking her son’s friend into the family under the guise of giving him love and caring he badly needed because of familial dysfunction, and then using him for sexual gratification? And admitted it in a TV interview in front of her husband? She doesn’t need anyone to diminish her; she does a fine job of it herself.

I have never seen her show, didn’t know that Will was up for an Oscar, and truth be told, I wouldn’t have been able to tell you who was hosting prior to all this happening. It’s clear that you and at least a few others are really upset with my own personal opinions of not liking that kind of humor. It’s strange that you all can bring in history from their lives, but if I make a similar analogy/reference to help explain my thoughts, you deem me as being wrong, “under the impression” or just ridiculous. I don’t like that kind of “humor”. I’m allowed to have that opinion. My first reaction when it came out of Chris’s mouth was to cringe. When I saw Will walk up and slap him my reaction was oh that wasn’t good. I saw a clip of Jada looking less than pleased. After seeing those clips, I really had no other thoughts about them personally, other than a few snippets of news coming across my feed. My thoughts were that this too is just another example of how women are being diminished and I said so on the other thread. My opinions are not all anchored on this one instance. Republicans are doing it to Ketanji Brown, we’re fighting to save/be allowed our personal healthcare…the list goes on. I’m not criticizing a single pea here for thinking that all this was hilarious. I’m not siding with a man who slapped another. Yet y’all are raking me over the coals for my opinion!

Yet y’all are raking me over the coals for my opinion! Because your opinion is about the wrong thing. You are making Jada into a victim when she isn't one. You admit you know zero about her, yet you're invested into turning this proud, successful black woman into some sort of disabled pathetic victim who needs a man (and you apparently) to defend her, when that's the last thing she is. None of us have heard Jada's thoughts on the subject, yet you seem to think you know how she feels. You're claiming to stand up for her, yet your words about the situation are doing the opposite. The women you are arguing with are giving her a lot more agency and credit than you are in her defense of her as a 'victim' of something. The issue at hand is Will Smith's toxic reaction to words HE didn't like. The "protector of all women" bullshit came afterwards in a pathetic attempt to justify his inappropriate actions.

How funny…”my opinion is about the wrong thing?” I’m not allowed to have an opinion over what I find not funny? I’ve made it crystal clear what my thoughts are in this, and it’s certainly not glorifying Jada as a victim. Not once have I “turned this proud, successful black woman into some sort of disabled victim” again those are your words—your assertions. You’re inserting more into what I’ve said than I have. I have not once made reference to what Jada thinks, not putting words/thoughts to her, and I’ve clearly said that. Again, YOUR assertions on top of what I’ve stated! And I’ve made crystal clear that my aversion is not finding that type of humor funny, especially at the expense of women—any woman. And you made fun of me for it.

And if you're pertaining to me as being one of those responding without reading what you're actually writing and saying, you're patently wrong. These are excerpts of your actual posts on two threads: I’m solely addressing ONLY how men disparage, degenerate women—when is it too far, going to stop—we ask men to support “me too” yet they should stand down while their wife is being targeted? I’ve been speaking about how men continue, with seemingly little consequences, to degenerate women. If you read my posts, my focus was how people (men in the instances I have mentioned) speak of, talk about, degenerate women. I’ve pretty much posted that I’m tired on women being degenerated, the “butt of a joke”. My focus on this thread and the Oscars thread has been on the lack of accountability for women being degenerated in public setting. And now you’re claiming you’re not depicting Jada as a victim? Then who were you talking about? All other women except Jada? Using your favored term, no one here is gaslighting you. You're the one who's doing it.

Oh you so busted me… This entire time, with ALL my posts, I’ve been secretly trying to protect Jada’s tender, frail, genteel, feminine heart….🙄🙄🙄 Sure, if you isolate a few of my posts (that were in response to specific questions) it certainly may work to fit the point you’re trying to hammer home. HOWEVER, why ignore ALL my other posts where I’ve either posted my opinion and/or further clarified? If I’m saying that I’m not trying to depict her specifically as a victim—why is that so hard to believe? when I say “some women” I’m speaking in general terms. Use the excerpts of my posts that you yourself pulled out—isn’t that clear enough? I don’t feel that the jokes on women l-any women, all women, like that are funny— that doesn’t make them victims, it means that I see it as disparaging, denigrating, to women. It’s MY opinion and how I feel. And yes, pjaye was gaslighting me. And no, it’s not my favored term here. And yes, I was told my opinion was the wrong one. And that some peas panties were in a wad, and that some peas needed to lighten up.

She's got a rep as a strong, non apologetic woman. See the interview she gave right before the Oscars where she proclaimed she didn't give a rat's ass what anyone thought of her bald head. No one is buying that she was insecure about it. She put that out there herself. This was about her enormous ego and control. If anything, maybe the jokes would hurt CR. I don't feel anything for Jada but disdain. I responded in general terms to the poster I quoted. I never mentioned a specific person. Not to mention, you don’t get to decide when someone/anyone has had enough of being made fun of or the butt of jokes. If we’re going to bring out prior interviews as justification to degenerate a person, you know that Chris Rock had been previously asked to stop poking fun at Jada. So there’s that. Here and on the other thread, I’ve been speaking to the lack of accountability and consequences that (men) seem to have when denigrating women. I don’t think it’s funny. I realize that some of you think it’s hilarious. I have lots of feelings about this. First, my DH would be in the doghouse for pulling shit like that. If I had had enough of being made fun of, I would be the one to speak up - not slap the person. I am, after all, a fucking adult and do know how to use my words. DH and I have discussed this ad nauseum - I am more than capable of defending myself. Him stepping up 'in my defense' undermines me. Second, the joke was not made off-the-cuff. It was scripted. It was on the teleprompter. That means it was approved by the producers and, by extension, the Academy. The same Academy with which Smith apparently took no issue. He was outraged enough to assault the host but was perfectly fine accepting his award. Performative outrage. Third, fuck Will Smith. Fourth, fuck Jada too.

Now, with that said, it does not mean I condone what Will did. I abhor violence. I think Chris Rock is a douche (and have for a while). I know very little of Jada. I hate when comedians make personal jokes at another persons expense, especially women, because there’s a lot going on in our country where we are constantly being diminished and denigrated, and even losing our own body autonomy with healthcare. I don’t really have thoughts beyond I would not have liked to hear a joke like that said about me, but I guess my panties are in a wad, I have no sense of humor, and need to lighten up! I honestly don’t get into the lives of celebrities or watch much entertainment tv for that matter.

LOL I needed that! So much panty wadding here, sheesh! Quite right. What happened to the days when you just kept scrolling if you didn't like something? It seems like people here are offended all the time. We're bickering over people we don't know on an obscure message board. This used to be a cut above the old 2 Peas NSBR because people were nicer. I don't condone anyone slapping anyone else or shouting obscenities, but I thought the joke was funny. <<dons hard hat>>

No where did I say Jada was a victim. Again, you’re adding commentary to stuff I didn’t write or think. I don’t approve of violence. What Will did was definitely wrong. If charges are brought he deserves those consequences. Yes, I mean denigrate—stupid auto correct/sub thank you—I’ll go back and fix. I don’t find that crap funny. I’ve explained my thoughts and perspective a few times already, yet others are inserting their own thoughts into what I actually wrote. I feel the same way about comedians who make fun of weakness, mental capacities, handicaps, ethnicity—it’s too hurtful and personal. When is it too much? There are no consequences. Why is it okay for you, personally, to denigrate men (well, one man in particular) for their appearance? If it is never okay to joke about a woman’s appearance- even by a comedian in the Oscars setting, where it is expected - why is it okay to make fun of a man’s appearance? Why the double-standard? I, personally, find it monumentally hypocritical to continue on blasting about this when you have made countless comments denigrating various aspects of Trump’s appearance. If it isn’t okay to joke about a woman’s appearance, it isn’t okay to joke about a man’s, even if it is a man you despise. Unless you are being hypocritical, IMO.

You’re right—I’m a big hypocrite. I did make fun of trumps appearance. It’s been a while, but yup, I did. I’m sure someone will search back my history to find my offending posts, so I’ll just agree that I did make fun of trumps appearance. And to be clear, I did not say it was never okay, I stated that I didn’t like that kind of humor, to me—that’s a big difference. My “blasting on” was to clear up assertions that were being made that I never wrote, said, thought. In the last 6 months, I’ve seen/read so much (too much in my opinion) tearing down women, and I’ve voiced my opinion. I witness almost daily, the effects of what making fun of trans kids has, so I work on doing better in other aspects of life. Just because I don’t speak up for men in the same way doesn’t mean that I condone that too, like has been asserted in a post or two here and on other thread. I pick my “battles”, and apparently on this topic I’m in the wrong. I stand corrected, the peas have enlightened me—it IS perfectly okay for comedians to make fun of all people—male, female—their appearances, lifestyles, wives, husbands and SO. I never realized that It’s all fair game and should be expected, that they have their own voices, (or PR teams if you’re a multi millionaire celebrity 😉) and don’t need a random woman with too much free time on a message board voicing her personal opinions on it.

I've already read every single one of them. I don't need to re-read anything. Who's upset with you? Who said you’re not allowed to have your opinion? Who said the joke was hilarious? (And by joke, I mean Chris' joke.) And if you're pertaining to me as being one of those responding without reading what you're actually writing and saying, you're patently wrong. And that some peas panties were in a wad, and that some peas needed to lighten up. How many times on this board have you yourself told women you’ve disagreed with that their opinions are wrong? In political threads alone, probably in the hundreds by now. You keep talking about your concern re women being disparaged and demeaned. That this event “ is just another example of how women are being diminished,” and that your “ opinions are not all anchored on this one instance.” That “ it’s happening everywhere and it needs to stop.” That “ if this crap continues, we will continue to be diminished.” Do you remember calling women on this board: “ complete piece of crap”; “ pathetic human crash and burn”; “ crazy ass fucker”; “ fucking awful human”; “ obviously stupid, feckless moron.” Or how about describing a female public figure you detest as “ a fucking cunt.” Or do you maintain exceptions to this overriding concern of yours? Such as: Your distress over the denigration of women in general is reserved only for those whose opinions you deem valid, and the others whose opinions don’t will just have to accept it? Your words are perfectly fine because they’re not jokes? There’s nothing demeaning about your words because your female targets deserved them in your appraisal? There’s nothing wrong about your words because this is just a tiny public message board? You’re good because you weren’t making fun of women’s appearance? It’s okay because you’re not a man? You’ve asked the questions, “ Where does it stop?” and “ When is it enough?” So, where do you think it should stop? When do you think it’s enough? I won’t argue with you further because it’s pointless. However, for what it’s worth, don’t indulge in this conceit of yours that you care about the tearing down of "women in general" and being disrespected, demeaned, disparaged. By your own measure, you would be found wanting.

butt of a joke the butt of a/the joke The target of a joke; the person or subject being mocked or ridiculed.
My big brother loves to tease me—every time he opens his mouth, I'm the butt of the joke. No one likes being the butt of a joke, but the best thing to do is just laugh with them.”
There is a segment of society that think it’s acceptable for people’s appearance to be made fun of in public.
Comedians do it all the time because it makes people laugh. Cheap jokes for cheap laughs.
I looked up the definition of “butt of a joke”, because that is what Jada was Sunday night. And what stood out for me was the bolded sentence. And I thought why should anyone who’s appearance is being made fun of in public “just laugh with them”? But the real question is being why was that person put in that position in the first place? Why is that acceptable? I mean seriously what’s funny about making fun of someone’s appearance in public?
If any comedian thinks the only way they can be funny is to make fun of other people’s appearance then maybe they should get a new career. IMO.
There was no question Will Smith was wrong and he apologized for it.
But Chris Rock and other comedians who think it’s ok to make fun of an audience members’s appearance for cheap laughs are wrong as well. So when are Chris Rock and other comedians not only going to apologize for making fun of someone in public but find other ways to be funny?
The other day I saw a snippet of a video from way back when. It was the guy who was the original voice of Donald Duck having a conversation with an animated Donald Duck. And both were talking like Donald Duck. Now that was funny.
But what is really funny is George Carlin’s routine about stuff. I forget when I first heard it, I mean the guy has been dead for years, but every once in awhile I will look at my stuff and smile thinking of that routine.
So it would appear that I will be disagreeing with the gang that thinks what Chris Rock said about Jada Pinkett’s appearance was not only acceptable but funny as well. Because it wasn’t IMO.
And no I don’t think Jada was a “victim” in the true sense of the word, I just don’t think she should have been made the butt of the joke for cheap laughs when it came to her hair style.

And what stood out for me was the bolded sentence. And I thought why should anyone who’s appearance is being made fun of in public This is the issue - he did not "make fun" of her appearance. Jada shaves her head - that's a fact. He didn't say a bald head was in anyway unattractive, bad or wrong. Jada was wearing a dark green dress - he didn't any anything rude or uncomplimentary about her dress. There's an older move that stars Demi Moore, she is a very attractive women, and she has a shaved head because she's in the military being - compared to her is also not an insult. In that movie she plays a women keeping up with men in the military...also nothing insulting there either, people in the armed forces are admired. She's fit and strong in that film. So Chris Rock sees Jada with a shaved head a in a green dress...he gets reminded that movie and says "GI Jane 2 - can't wait to see it" He just said she looks like a specific woman in a promotional poster for a specific film. How is Jada the "butt of a joke" here? he compared her looks to a very attractive (real) woman playing a strong/fit character who defends her country. He didn't call or ugly or dumb or old, the movie wasn't about a stripper or a hooker, or some bimbo. The movie opened at no 1 and Moore got decent reviews. I'm failing to see why people are claiming this is an insult and she's "the butt of the joke"...where's the "butt" part exactly? Yes she has a mild form of alopecia (I locked at those Oscar photos closely I can't any any bald patches...so the condition isn't as severe as some people are making out), but that doesn't changed the fact that she voluntarily shaved her head. Saying "A" looks like "B" when there isn't anything wrong/bad about with "B" doesn't mean A has been insulted or made fun of in many way.
