BOOK CENSORSHIP NEWS: AUGUST 11, 2023I was going to paste the important stuff after the article, but there's just too much. Some lowlights: "Hanover County, Virginia, schools are recommending Moms for Liberty’s absolutely unprofessional BookLooks website as a resource for actual trained professionals to do their job. This is your taxpayer money at work — giving legitimacy to a Hate Group’s crowd-sourced bigotry. Cool, cool. Lest we forget, they find Lolita more appropriate for readers than The Kite Runner. Fauquier County (VA) has officially posted their list of “sexually explicit” books in the high school libraries. You’ll be shocked to learn most of them are LGBTQ+ books and/or deal with extremely difficult topics like rape or trafficking. Aren’t the folks complaining about these books the same ones crying about how amazing Sound of Freedom is? What is it you want? The lists for the three high schools are on the left-hand side of the news article. “Board member Brian Sloan offered a simple suggestion. “If there is one word that a kid can’t speak, then I don’t think it should be inside a school library,” he said.” Iredell-Statesville Schools (NC) continue to be a mess. Imagine if this was policy — some kids can’t say the word “butt,” and some can’t say the word “hate,” and some can say anything they wish. The Oklahoma State Department of Education is doing the most in their job of ensuring educational access to students across the state, claiming there is porn in libraries and they have proof but they also do not…have proof. Alabama is the latest state trying to cut ties with the American Library Association, following in the footsteps of Montana and others."

www.nytimes.com/2023/08/13/opinion/shakespeare-canceled-schools.html It seemed, for a moment, that Shakespeare was being canceled. Last week, school district officials in Hillsborough County, Fla., said that they were preparing high school lessons for the new academic year with some of William Shakespeare’s works taught only with excerpts, partly in keeping with Gov. Ron DeSantis’s legislation about what students can or can’t be exposed to.
One can no more take out the dirty parts of Shakespeare than one can take out the poetry. It’s all intertwined, so that Shakespeare seems almost purposefully designed to confound those who want to segregate the smutty from the sublime. His work is proof that profundity can live next to, and even be found in, the pornographic, the viscerally violent and the existentially horrifying. So if you’re looking for sex, gore and the unspeakable absurdity of existence in Shakespeare, you will definitely find it. That’s the genius of Shakespeare. And it’s precisely what makes his work worth studying.

Even better. Now AI is being used to choose which books to ban... so, no person is actually reading the books before banning them. FFS.

Interesting perspective on book bans www.nytimes.com/2023/08/14/opinion/book-bans-censorship-reading.htmlMy youthful fight against the restricted reading list was short-lived. The girl and I were called to the principal’s office, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the teachers who signed our petition were called too. The restricted reading list remained in force. But no one could stop me from reading what I wanted to read, and no one could have stopped me from marrying the girl. We’re married still, bookworms to this day — what a pair of dinosaurs we turned out to be.
But so are the book banners — not only for engaging in a no-win fight as old as Gutenberg, but also for believing, as we do, that books are powerful things worth fighting over. If only they believed in the intelligence of their own children and in their ability to influence them by example and discussion as opposed to the cultivation of philistinism and fear. My view of Allen Ginsberg actually became more critical after reading Kramer’s biography, the book I’d persuaded my skeptical mother to let me read. She probably didn’t think so at the time, but she knew what she was doing.

They are banning, returning, restricting, and in some cases, checking out all copies of some books for an entire school year. The theme; diversity. www.fftrp.org/duval_returned_titles

School districts are now using ChatGBT to decide which books shoukd stay and which books should go. Iowa's Mason City Community School District is one of them.

This is probably stating the obvious, but I just wanted to say if I liked your post about books being removed or banned, it’s because I think it’s important to bring attention to what is happening around the country. I am disgusted by the actions of Republicans and Moms of Liberty. Republicans preach about individual responsibility and parental rights. How about parents take responsibility for what their kids are taught? If a parent thinks a book is inappropriate, fine. Have a discussion with your kid and/ or a teacher or librarian. No parent should have the right to determine what books are available to other kids.

"Why are there no books about Heterosexual Pride or Heterosexual parenthood on display? ... This is a movement and it is political. There is a specific agenda. I know it and you know it."
Yes, Fran, we all know there's an agenda.

I don't think the Republicans will stop until libraries are empty, there are no more public schools and we only have charter and religious schools left. www.nytimes.com/2023/08/18/us/georgia-teacher-fired-gender-book.htmlTeacher Is Fired for Reading Book on Gender Identity in Class The teacher in Georgia was fired for reading to fifth graders “My Shadow Is Purple,” which is about a child who cannot relate to the colors blue and pink.
A teacher in an Atlanta suburb has been fired for reading a book to fifth-grade students that explores gender roles and identity through the eyes of a child who describes their shadow as purple, her lawyer said on Friday.
The Cobb County Board of Education voted 4-3 on Thursday to approve the recommendation by the superintendent, Chris Ragsdale, to terminate the contract of the teacher, Katherine Rinderle, according to a recording of the meeting.
In February, she purchased “My Shadow Is Purple,” by the Australian author Scott Stuart, at a district-approved book fair, and read it to her class on March 8.
The book centers on a gender nonbinary theme in which a child describes the color of their shadow as different from their mother’s pink shadow and father’s blue shadow.
In an interview on Friday, Ms. Rinderle said the students discussed the book, in which the child enjoys toys and sports commonly associated with either boys or girls. Then they were encouraged to write poems describing their own “shadows.”
In June, Mr. Ragsdale said in a letter to Ms. Rinderle that the district intended to terminate her employment for “insubordination, willful neglect of duties and any other good and sufficient cause,” a copy of the letter said.
It said the “controversial” topic of gender identity and fluidity was “not an appropriate” topic for 10- and 11-year-old students.
The decision reflected several laws signed last year by Gov. Kemp.
One law, the Parents’ Bill of Rights, “provides greater transparency to parents and legal guardians regarding what their student is being taught in school and protects the fundamental right of moms and dads across this state to direct the education of their child.”
Another law is meant to prevent “divisive concepts and ideologies from invading the classroom.”
Mr. Goodmark said the laws “have operated to censor teachers in the classroom.”

Excellent question. With everything else going on, why are conservatives really worried about what kids are reading in libraries? Shouldn't we be celebrating that they're actually reading a book and not on their phones/ devices?

The link to the John Green tweet isn't working, so I went and found a lot of great gems from him. Love that he's pushing back on his books being banned in his home state.

A whole thread of books being challenged, mostly due to "CRT", but this one was for something else:
Paying attention yet, folks?
