If you just want to try out a stamp press style tool to see if it's for you, you can easily make one in a few minutes with an clear plastic CD or DVD case.
Other people have used hinged photo frames to DIY, but the CD route is the easiest IMO. Pull out the black plastic part that holds the disk, put some foam in the bottom, and attach clear stamp to the lid. It'll only do small papers and careful not to be very rough as the plastic can crack, but for a relatively small investment you can test out the principle and decide if you want a commercial version.

This is good advice. Back when the MISTI was the only one available, I did the hinged frame version. It worked okay, but not perfect. It worked well enough that I decided to get the Tim Holtz version when it was available. And later I bought the Stampin’ Up version. Having a good stamp platform has helped me consistently use my stamps so much more, and I get much better impressions. I don’t stamp without a platform now. I ended up removing all of my wood mounted stamps and turning them into peel and stick stamps. No regrets.

Hey that UK stamp tool posted earlier on thread by cardboxer from craftstash.us is very interesting to me if that media block is like a jelly mat.
I’ve been wanting to get into jelly mat printing but I’m clumsy so one that fits in a platform would be awesome. I just might order this one I’m watching the videos on the ‘media mat’ use now

I have the larger TH one and a smaller WRMK one (pre-lawsuit pulling). I like them both. I would never buy a Misti due to the owner’s behavior, but don’t begrudge those that prefer it to other platforms. I do appreciate that we have so many threads about products and producers and can make informed decisions on who we support with our crafty dollars.

Thanks for e-mailing them CardBoxer ! IKWYM about the hinge - I love that ease - BUT - with my TH platform I find there are "dead spots" close to the hinge and close to the edges where I don't get a good impression. I *almost* want a misti so that I can get rid of that issue, but I have too much distaste for the company to spend my money with them! I hear you. The sturdiness of the Tim platforms is great but less flex because of it can be an issue. I bought the mini Misti for $5.00 at an LSS going out of business sale years ago and still felt a little guilty. But the shop owner would have paid MSP up front so my little money went to the owner. Have you thought about at Natasha's favorite positioner? The company is in the UK but also has a US website. Shipping wasn’t bad and it came quickly. Here’s her youtube video and a link to the positioner. A sticky mat is a good idea. If you use the link in Natasha’s channel she may get a bit of $. youtu.be/6aB0jcJUOiAwww.craftstash.us/creative-craft-products-stamp-platform-with-magnets.htmlETA They also have a bundle with a media plate. A video at the bottom of the page shows how it’s used. www.craftstash.us/creative-craft-products-8-5in-x-6-5in-stamp-platform-media-plate-bundle.html

I'm not a stamper, so I have no opinion on whether anyone needs a Misti, but I have to say that I really enjoyed this thread. I have gone and read the first three pages of MISTI-gate, and it's a gem! The highlight for me was don : Who knew Don had so much glorious snark in him?!

I remember reading that thread when I was contemplating buying a stamping platform, and I ended up with the one from Tim Holtz. I love it.
