Actually although I probably instinctually knew that about a cane used for an injury, I didn't know that from nursing because I have always worked with cardiac patients and not patients with ortho injuries. My patients are just using a cane for balance. I definitely knew about the sock aids though! The surf in Hawaii knocked me down in Feb and I hurt my knee. My friend had both a walker and a cane with her, so it was decided I would use the cane. My niece, an RN, whipped out her phone and watched a YouTube tutorial to show me how to use it. She said at work they often use YouTube to know what to do. totally surprised me! fortunately the knee was fine after a week. Yeah there are times we need to get you tube or Google help too, you just have to know what's legit. Peritoneal dialysis comes to mind, I hadn't done that in years and none of the new nurses ever had. I consulted someone on a different floor and the patient also (they're usually the most knowledgeable as they do it at home) but you tube at least refreshed the whole process for me.

The fruit was sliced but had the fuzzy skin on. I just ate the whole thing. They looked at me like I had 3 heads. :X Apparently you *can* eat it just fine, but it's not "the norm".

On the subject of random poop facts, does he know that wombat poop is cubed? YES! Thank you though! We also found out that there are people who take moose poop and sell it as earrings and other souvenirs. OMG I totally forgot I have moose poop earrings from my time living in Alaska!

I learned that rabbits have 28 teeth! That's only 4 less than the average human. There are the 4 in front and 24 further back.

I've learned the neighborhood lemonade cost has risen steeply. The young entrepreneur next door got me for a dollar for about 6 oz. Inflation!

I recently learned that a dog's gums turn very pale pink/white for a 12-24 hour window when she's about 21 days pregnant. It's one of the signs used to confirm a pregnancy.
During that time, the puppies are attaching to the uterine wall and drawing a large supply of blood. Normal color resumes as the mother's system adjusts.

I’ve been doing some research on lithium-ion batteries and learned that there are electric cars that will go 0-60 mph in 2 seconds. Unbelievable.

I can’t eat açaí bowls bc it makes my mouth and throat itch. Kiwi started doing the same thing.

Our family speaks Mandarin, Chinese as a second language, and, this week my son was called to serve in Hong Kong, China for his 2 year religious mission and will be speaking Cantonese (which is very different from Mandarin). Curious, I studied up on Cantonese a bit. I learned that Cantonese originally had 9 tones, but, it has evolved to essentially 6 tones. And, I also learned that the “n” sound at the beginning of many words can be pronounced as an “l” sound and is called the “lazy tongue pronunciation.” However, the inverse is not true. So, when in doubt between and n or l sound (like “nei” vs. “lei”), you should pronounce it with the “l” sound.

I learned that the most disgusting thing on earth is a fried oyster. It was like creamy minerals.
I almost threw up after one bite.
It was puffed and I'm still haunted by the texture. I thought (being Midwestern) that frying in batter makes everything delicious.
How could I have been so wrong?
It would have been better to swallow it raw, I'm quite sure, but after that I couldn't eat anything else.

Or my favorite, barbecued with garlic and butter. Yum.

Ds shared this fun fact with me. 86% of the people of Scotland and Ireland have blue or green eyes. In Iceland, it's even higher, 87% of men and 89% of women. Women are also more likely to have green eyes than men. Interesting. I have green eyes and my ex-husband has green eyes. Both of our children also have green eyes. I have been listening to a new to me podcast called A History of Rock in 500 songs and I'm amazed at the things I'm learning from it. His knowledge on these topics is so incredibly amazing. I learned a lot about Aretha Franklin this week. Did you know she was incredibly shy? She was gifted at the piano. Her father was a preacher who was huge into the civil rights movement. She performed at Dr. King's events many times and her jerk husband was angry when she would perform there for free. Note that you really need to be a music nerd to enjoy this podcast. The detail and history lessons are incredible, but for a casual listener, this is probably not the podcast for you.

I learned that once you peel it, a banana naturally separates into three parts - you just have to pull it apart. My son-in-law demonstrated this when he was feeding his daughter. All these years I've been slicing my bananas!

I’m glad you found out too! DD now tells me apples have started to affect her too. Ugh that’s too bad. It’s frustrating when more things get taken away. And they’re good for you! My cousin and I were chatting recently, and she brought up that most fruit has started to cause oral problems. Her Dr told her to pop the fruit into the microwave briefly and it would cause the breakdown of whatever is causing the problem. She microwaves for about 15 seconds and can eat fruit again.

My son has been listening to books on his iPad about animal poop and, apparently, rabbits and (some) birds eat their own poop. It gives their bodies a 2nd chance to digest the nutrients they missed the first time. I learned today that several animals babies (koalas, pandas, hippos and elephants) eat mom's poop...I guess their digestive tract is completely sterile when they're born, and they need to eat fecal matter to get it going or something.
