My sis and her son decided to come from NY to FL to visit me and DD34 for a week. 2 days after they arrived, her son felt sick & tested positive for Covid. He's 16 and has avoided getting Covid, just as DD and I have.
We isolated him in a bedroom/bathroom, and gave him food on a tray at the door, etc., but this has been my biggest fear during DH's cancer 'journey' and subsequently with my own health. Now I fear getting it any day.
I have COPD & asthma, so I try to be super-careful. Besides being careful and keeping things disinfected + wearing masks if my nephew even pops out of his bedroom for anything, is there anything else I should be doing??
And if I do get Covid, is there anything I should know? Hoping it'll be not too bad if I get it, but my nephew has been coughing (hacking--he has asthma & has been using his emergency inhaler daily now), achy and miserable. So, any tips?? Should I get any OTC meds ahead of time for me? Should I tell my PCP if I do test positive?? TIA. Trying to be prepared. xo

Can you increase ventilation, especially pulling air OUTSIDE from the room he is in? So a fan or two in his windows, blowing out.
Do you have a HEPA unit to filter the air closest to you.
I would contact your doctor so they can line up the meds just in case.
I hope you don’t get it.

Positive = An immediate call to your doctor for the specific Covid anti-viral... I think best taken within 48 hours . Can't remember the name.
My pulmonologist said to call ASAP with a positive test.

I think it’s a good idea, especially with your health concerns, to let your doctor know right away if you test positive. My doctor said she can usually tell by the first few days how it’s going to go for her patients. And yours might want to get you treatment right away. |

I think it’s a good idea, especially with your health concerns, to let your doctor know right away if you test positive. My doctor said she can usually tell by the first few days how it’s going to go for her patients. And yours might want to get you treatment right away. I think that sister needs to spring for a supply of tests - thankfully they seem to be available for purchase everywhere these days (at least around here). @bergdorfblonde may want to test to ensure treatment can start early if she does contract it. |

Oh man. The phrase “If it weren’t for bad luck, you’d have no luck at all!” comes to mind. I hope you are spared. I would call my doctor the second you test positive so that you can get on the latest treatment. I would also start doubling up on my cooking so that I could get several meals in the freezer just in case. You probably won’t have any energy to cook if you do catch it. Let’s hope that won’t be needed, but having several homemade items ready to heat up is never a bad thing.

My 63 year old sister-in-law who has lupus contracted Covid last week and experienced moderate symptoms. Her Dr. said that she shouldn't take the paxlovid pill and scheduled her for the monoclonal antibody infusion the next day. She said she started to feel somewhat better within four hours.
Fortunately, she was testing herself everyday after she learned she was exposed so she caught it early. I felt bad because she has been so careful. She teaches high school and said she was about the only one in her building still wearing a mask. She made it through the year, but the following week she felt she should go to a luncheon to honor one of her students who was awarded a scholarship by the Rotary Club. The student called the next day to say that she tested positive. All twelve people at the luncheon, which were mostly octogenarian Rotarians, got sick.
I hope you don't get it, but I recommend that you test frequently so you can call your Dr. right away if you test positive.

Hoping you stay healthy! If it makes you feel any better my DD has asthma and when she got it she felt ill but not terribly sick. For her normally a cold turns into bronchitis so I was nervous for her. I'd just be sure to have your inhaler and get any OTC cold/flu meds just to be prepared, and any food or drinks you might need. My fam took the Dayquil/Nyquil combo.

The anti-viral is paxlovid I think.
I have asthma and when I had Covid, it didn't attack my lungs! It was all in my sinuses. I felt like total butt for 3 full days and once my 104 fever broke, I was almost back to 100%. It was crazy!
I hope you can avoid it. I'd call your doc and give him a heads up that you've got a Covid positive person in your home.

I never thought I might run out of tests, but now's the time. Darn. I have about 6 more kits (2 tests in each).

Good to know. So far we seem to have enough tests. Tonight is day 3 for my nephew, and I tested yesterday. I'll test again tomorrow morning & will call my primary dr asap if it's positive.
Sidenote: If my sis tests positive, they can't really get on a plane (or, they SHOULDN'T)... What began as a thoughtful visit turned into a crazy time so far.

We've all been testing ourselves daily. My sister & I feel a little feverish and have scratchy throats and runny noses, but I usually have that this time of year here. So hard to tell so far, but we'll continue to test. I WILL call my doctor asap if I do test positive. Thanks!

Especially since you would be going into it at a deficit. And I doubt you would feel like driving to go pick up anything. As a single person, I learned to think ahead to be able to take care of myself if I needed to. When my son was old enough to work the stove/oven, he would cook for us if I was sick. I know your daughter is there with you, but she could catch it too. I’m crossing my fingers for you guys. |

I've wound up in the ER from some colds or the flu and had to have the breathing tent done, so we've been SO careful (until now). I have all of my inhalers (daily Advair & rescue inhalers) all set. I have some cold meds leftover for DH (heart-safe), so that should be okay (not outdated yet). Thanks. I'll add cold/flu meds to my list in case I run out. |

Hmm, I've been taking Sudafed because I thought I had a sinus infection. I really can't tell with my normal illnesses (sinus issues, migraines, allergies....).
I should have called my doctor yesterday. That was dumb of me not to call, but I was focused on my nephew's health (he's got more breathing issues than I do). Maybe I'll write her via her portal anyway. Thanks.

You need to eat nourishing food to help your body fight the virus. Especially since you would be going into it at a deficit. And I doubt you would feel like driving to go pick up anything. As a single person, I learned to think ahead to be able to take care of myself if I needed to. When my son was old enough to work the stove/oven, he would cook for us if I was sick. I know your daughter is there with you, but she could catch it too. I’m crossing my fingers for you guys. I could order a delivery from my foodstore..... Might be a good idea. I had an off taste to my tea on Wednesday (12/22) Friday (12/24) I started thinking it was allergies, took Zyrtec. By 4 that afternoon my back was soooo achy and my body started hurting. Shortly after my fever shot up to 104 where it stayed for 3 days. I didn’t even have the energy to scroll Facebook! I basically slept Christmas Eve thru Boxing Day. I tested positive on a rapid 12/27, positive on PCR 12/29. I didn’t continue to test until I was negative. I have no idea how long I would have tested positive. I went back to work 1/4. |

I’m finishing day 6 of COVID now, have Scleroderma, asthma and am moderately immunosuppressed. I have done ok with it.
Have on hand an expectorant, if possible. I took a generic Dayquil type med every day since it started, and feel it helped. I think it kept my temp down (highest was 102) and my secretions thin enough to cough up, because that was my main concern.
My daughter, who lives with me, tested positive (with lesser symptoms than I ultimately had) two days prior to my first true symptoms, so I just expected that I would have it. I didn’t test positive until 2 days after the onset of those symptoms.
Sorry your household is dealing with it, I hope he’s feeling better soon and that you somehow escape it, but if not, you will likely do just fine! Drink lots of water and make sleep a priority as much as you’re able to. Good luck!

My sister had a rough time of it. Her granddaughter who is staying with her has not contracted the virus.
I know of someone who tested positive and tried to go to work the next day. She was wearing a mask and told her supervisor that she was wearing a mask 'cause she was positive. He sent her out of the building and to her car with her protesting, "It is OK, I am wearing a mask." sheesh.......this is why it continues to spread!
