I do a little.
I don't tip a full 15%, but I add a couple bucks onto my order. They have to package things up, and if it is a place that I know takes care in how they do it, and not just slap things in a foam box and it all soaks together, I tip. I tip if they have to seal alcoholic drinks, like margaritas.

You're absolutely right it is, but the employees aren't doing anything about it. They just inform the locals they see all the time, because they are in a tourist area.

Precovid, I did not. Now I do. Same. I tip at least 20%. We have so many restaurants here closing or with limited hours due to staffing.

If I go in, I dont generally tip. Those employees who took your order, boxed it up, and got everything ready for you are still only making $2.13/hr (amount may vary by state) and getting taxed on their sales, ie: your food. I always tip for to-go at restaurants. I usually over tip anywhere I go. Having worked in the service industry and having a kid who is in the industry tends to open your eyes to what the workers go through.

Mom & Pop restaurants - yes. I tipped 15% yesterday at a one of a kind coffee shop.
Fast food drive thru - no. Never have, even Starbucks.
Chain sit down restaurant - I did during Covid shut down. Now that indoor service is back and places are busy, I stopped.
Pizza delivery - yes I have always tipped the driver.
We don't use any food delivery service.

Not as a rule. Tipping is for workers who make a lower wage based on them receiving tips (it is maybe $2.50/hour). I never tip at fast food, sandwich shops, etc where there would ne. Do you not tip when you’re in states that don’t have a tip credit? Not something I research when I go out of state. I tip as usual.

I tip 20% across the board. More if the service was exceptional. I almost feel like to-go orders are a big pain in the ass than just bringing out a plate. And honestly, it’s a tough job. They deserve it.

If you don't tip on take out that's your prerogative but for the love of all that's holy don't you dare defend it with "it's not the same level of service" .... just say you don't feel like it. No need to add insult to injury.

No need to add insult to injury. I’m not getting any service when I get takeout. I’m getting service when a waiter comes to my table repeatedly to bring refills and clear dishes and attend to all my requests. It’s not the same at all. When I order takeout the person packaging it is giving me the same level of service that I get at a fast food restaurant, so I see no reason to tip. Tipping is about how much service I get, nothing else.

I generally do not tip for fast food. There might be an occasion where I do tip, like if they bring food to me. But I typically do not.

Generally lower than if we dine in as it’s a one snd done thing. Here servers are making at least $15 an hour. During Covid the few times we did takeout we tipped more than normal dine in as I knew they really needed it snd I wanted the restaurant/servers to survive.
No tips for fast food or drive thru.

I tip on takeout at the couple local restaurants we go to. I know the people who work there and I’m super glad they’ve made it so far. I don’t tip on fast food or chains, but we don’t eat at those very often.

I will always tip for these two reasons:
1. Does the person earn less than minimum wage? 2. Does the person bring it to me outside of the business?
If I have to walk into the business and pick up my food, I may or may not tip.
I asked an employee at Sonic who got the tips from app orders and she said they went directly into their paycheck. I usually give them $1-2 when they come out to the vehicle.

Make sure it’s packaged correctly, include everything you requested, etc. because once you drive away you can’t call a server back “to your table” kwim? I guess I see it as the same service (I’m not talking fast food…they get at least minimu wage…this is regarding restaurant staff). They still make the same wage if I’m sitting inside or not. I’m not saying you should tip, I’m explaining why I do.

I base it solely on the service I receive. Someone who takes my order, packs it up, makes sure everything is there, is doing the same job for me whether it’s Taco Bell or Chili’s. So, not deserving of a tip, IMO.

I tip 10-15% for take out - especially post covid. And I always tip at Starbucks. I find it interesting that tipping your bartender is standard, but the barista who on average has a much more difficult order is rarely tipped. If you don't tip, at least don't be a pita with your "special" order - but usually the biggest "special" customers are also those who don't tip for their extra service requirements.

No one is ordering 15 customizations of their taco - but they sure as hell do at Starbucks.

Literally, in the Taco Bell app there are dozens of customization options for every single menu item. Their order app is just like Starbucks with the same number of customizations. They’re the same.

My oldest is a hostess at Seasons 52. It’s her job to prepare takeout orders - in addition to retrieving and checking the packed entrees, she assembles and packs side salads, desserts, some sides, beverages, etc., makes sure everything is secure in the bag(s), adds utensils and whatever else is needed. It’s quite a bit of work above and beyond normal hostessing duties and she appreciates those who tip.
But some people are just assholes and she accepts that, too.

I haven't been to a taco bell in 30+ years so I'll take your word for it. I can't imagine making a taco as complicated as some of the starbucks drinks I've seen, but I have no doubt you do your best to make any and all service workers' lives hell.

Not sure how ordering something that’s available on the company’s app is making anyone’s life hell. Isn’t it their job to make food to order? I mean, Burger King is fast food, right? And their slogan is “have it your way.” They built their brand around customizations, just as Starbucks has. “Short order cook” is the job description.

I already answered above, but I just want to add that I tip differently pre and post Covid. Pre-Covid used to be all about the service. I rarely tipped for take-out. Now, I will tip for take-out because of all the sh$t the workers have to now deal with. And for my favorite places, I am just happy to see them still there and they still have jobs, so I tip them now.

I know I would not like food service and have no desire to try it. I have worked retail, though, and didn’t think it was nearly as bad or complicated or stressful as some people whine about.

The reason I knew you'd never worked in food service is your exact lack of realization on why customization makes their job more difficult. You're right - it's there in the app that you can add or subtract as many different things as you like - and the company surely wouldn't have the option if they didn't want the customer to use it. And you know what else is right there in the app? The tip option - and yes they definitely want the customer to use it, particularly when they're slowing down the line with all of the customizations. As I said, I haven't a clue what taco bell does or doesn't allow or the impact - but I have seen what the utterly ridiculous customers in starbucks with their total off menu bullshit orders and then the baristas getting the blow back when people's coffees take too long.
