I'm curious if people tip when you get take out? We don't do so very often but I am about to place an order.

It depends - am I getting take out from fast food/quick service/pizza or am I getting take out from a sit-down restaurant? I'll tip for the latter but not the former generally

It depends. If it is someplace I go often, and the employees know me, then yes.

Precovid, I did not. Now I do.

Fast food, usually not. But, if the kid/person working is really friendly, then I give them a dollar or two.
Dessert type place (ice cream, cookies, bundt cake, See's chocolate, etc...) I give a dollar or two. They usually have to package or box whatever I am purchasing.
Regular restaurant. Yes, 20% (more or less depending on the service).
My tip is also based on quality of service, and I adjust it accordingly.

I do. Maybe not as much as I would give if I was dining in, but I do tip on take out.

Well, I tipped but am kind of irritated that I did since I had to go there to order (online service wasn't working and no answer on the phone), go back to the hotel to wait for the food, go back to get the food, then go back because they forgot my salad dressing.
We are at a hotel and the restaurant is within walking distance, just kind of a hassle to go back for the dressing since it is late and we are hungry. Oh well.

Depends on the situation.
Fast food, no.
Chains ... if I walk in and pick it up, no. If it's curbside pick up, yes, but only 10%.
Local restaurants ... yes. I ordered lunch for 6 yesterday and had one of our employees pick it up. I tipped 20%.

Most places where I pick up takeout, I go often enough that I know the name of the owner's dog and when the person at the register left to visit family in Puerto Rico; yeah, I tip, I see these people all the time.

No.
I tip for table service. Take out is the same service as fast food, so I’m not tipping for that. I also don’t tip at Starbucks, ice cream shops, etc.

Yes.
I just went to a local Dairy Queen tonight with some neighbors. We’ve been going to this DQ for 18 years now - all take-out. I always tip - it is a locally owned franchise. The difference from pre-COVID is that I doubled my tip.

I usually just wait at the restaurant for my order. Sorry they didn’t get it right the first time.

I don't tip if I'm picking up the food, only for table service or delivery. I'm a very good tipper in general but to me that's nonsense.

Depends on the place. Fast food, no because we usually will hit the drive through. We don’t typically order food to go from sit down type restaurants. Ice cream store places that are usually staffed by high school or college students—always. Those kids appreciate getting tips and they need the money.

We don't order from sit down restaurants too frequently but we'll tip a few dollars when we do.

Pre-covid I tipped 10% for takeout. Now I tip 15-20% for takeout (and generally 25-30% for sit down.)
People have gone absolutely batshit crazy in the last two years, and I’m going to do whatever I can to make a service person’s day better.

We didn’t prior to covid. Now, I do. We rarely eat at fast food or sit down chain restaurants. I tip at local sit down places and at places like Panera, Chipotle etc. I appreciate that someone else is cooking a meal, assembling it and bringing it to me. Especially at sit down places - local or chains, the servers are missing out on tips from regular diners by helping with take out orders. I tip at local ice cream places, too. Like someone else said, the high school or college kids always appreciate it.

Not as a rule. Tipping is for workers who make a lower wage based on them receiving tips (it is maybe $2.50/hour). I never tip at fast food, sandwich shops, etc where there would never be a chance that those workers would make that lower wage. At a mainly sit down place, if it is carside, I tip a couple bucks. If I go in, I dont generally tip.
I hate the concept of tipping and I wish we would do away with it in this country.

I hate the concept of tipping and I wish we would do away with it in this country. I agree. There's a local coffee shop where my Mom lives and the owner takes all the tips. No exceptions. But the employees won't leave because they like their job.

No. They are doing their jobs. Putting food in a bag and ringing up the purchase. I don’t tip grocery store cashiers, who basically do the same thing.

Always! Even if it’s just a little but yes usually 10-15%.
For fast food, no.
For restaurants, yes.

PreCovid I never did (but honestly we didn’t get takeout very often, we just ate there).
Now, if it’s a table service restaurant that we’re getting take out from, I tip around 10%. I don’t tip for fast food, pizza, ice cream (basically places that have always done takeout and takeout is a significant portion of their business).
For regular restaurants I tip around 20%, give or take based on service quality. We don’t get delivery (too far from everything) but if we did I’d tip them the same, possibly more depending on distance, order size and other factors.
I do wish tipping would go away and we’d just pay people a decent wage with the expectation that they’d do their job well but until that happens 🤷🏻♀️
