The only time we have white bread in the house is if it’s a baguette or roll. Our everyday bread is the Dave’s Killer Good Seed. If the oldest is home, I’ll get half a loaf of sourdough for her as it’s the only bread miss picky will eat. I grew up wishing for wonder bread. My mom baked our bread for years, all different kinds, and I didn’t appreciate it. I wanted wonder bread in my lunch box like everyone else had! I also wanted Oreos instead of homemade cookies. 🙄 My mom baked a variety of wonderful cookies. I dreamed of Hostess snack cakes in my lunch. . . Eeewww, yuck.

I admit to laughing a bit at the disparaging of Wonder Bread. As a kid it was rich people bread in my world. See also Kraft Mac n Cheese. We either ate mom’s homemade or the cheapest store brand. When the generic foods (basic B&W packaging) came out in the 70’s, that’s what we bought. I loved eating at our neighbors where they had fancy brand name groceries.
I never met a loaf of bread I didn’t love. From the softest, fluffiest white to the crunchiest, seeded brown. I used to read a detective series as a teen (author escapes at the moment) and the main character would eat the most amazing sandwiches. The ingredients would be described in detail and it always made me hungry. It also taught me that bread is not only white or wheat and taste and texture serve a purpose for a dish/meal.

When we moved from Germany to the USA in 1966 (I was 6 years old) the only bread my German mother could find at the commissary was Wonder Bread or something just like it. She called it "shitty American white bread", and still does to this day. Thank goodness things have changed. As a kid I have to admit I did like it, but as an adult my tastes changed. Now I love the bread I buy at Whole Foods Bakery-their Old World Rye Bread, or their Fire Bread. Best of all though I love the German bread I have when I go back to Germany. Yum!!!

I guess I'll embarrass myself and admit in the thread that we eat a lot of white bread.
Kids like pb&j. Toast. Grilled cheese. Lunchmeat sandwiches. Cinnamon sugar toast.

Many years ago a relative visited from Germany. He called the Wonder-style white bread “accordion “ bread. Think about it.

My kids really like the Artesano bread for French toast - it's very similar to brioche but much more affordable.
For sandwiches etc we do homemade whole wheat bread. I love the seedy breads but no one else does, so I usually have a loaf in the freezer for the occasional piece of toast.

I once (way back when) saw a layout in a decor magazine that used that generic packaging on display in their kitchen and loved the look. This was before everyone started using text as decor. Next time I was grocery shopping I looked to see what was available to see if I could incorporate that look and there wasn't much available. And then it seemed to disappear completely.

I picked rarely for the soft white bread. I do typically only buy white bread but I prefer a hearty, Canadian, or farmhouse type white.

I wonder if that's part of why DH loves it - he grew up very poor and perhaps it was a treat for him? I remember our family buying the black and white groceries when we moved to the states but we were a bit better off than his family was.

Yep..always been a white plain bread person.. Wonderbread is probably my favorite but just depends on price and whatnot.
Wow there is a lot of hate for 'white Wonderbread type bread'.
I will admit though, I am like a 12 year old sometimes when it comes to food. I want most things plain. Bread with a bunch of nuts or grains.. yuck.
Now I wish my grandma was alive (that would make her WELL over 100..lol) she made the best homemade bread. Five loaves a day she made when my mom was growing up. The old fashion way of course. I think by the time the last of the kids moved out she still would make a couple a day.
