everything. I've been looking at homes online for a few months now, just to have an idea of what is out there on the market for when I sell my house and move. So many homes you can tell are updated, but everything is just GRAY. Gray wood floors. Gray walls. Gray cabinets. Gray tile.
I guess I have missed something in the world of home trends. LOL I like gray walls, but I am not sure I am a huge fan of the gray wood floors that look like aged barn wood or something. They look pretty, but it seems like something that will look totally outdated in a few years. The best ones are the homes that still have 1970s-90s golden/orangey oak cabinets, with the gray walls and gray floors. LOL

It’s been that way for a while here at least. We painted our office steel grey about a year ago and my DD has just had her hall, stairs and landings re-painted soft grey. M grey carpet I could see but not sure about painted boards.

Gray has been big here for nearly 10 years and is now phasing out. We are seeing more white, shades of green and still the classic blues. For resale, I'm not sure I would bother to follow the gray trend that closely.

Ha. We are getting ready to close on a house that we're selling, that we had to completely remodel because of water damage. DH turned the contractor loose with the decor, thinking he'd know what is selling. The place is gray. All gray (with white counters and light gray/white walls and black fixtures).
We had a full price offer within 3 days, so I guess he was onto something.
It's not my style personally, but it does seem to be what sells.

Oh the grey floors... I admit they did look pretty, but now I see them as so trendy and will be expensive to replace as the trend is starting to die down.
I do like the lighter wood floors that keep the wood tone, but have just a hint of a bleached tone. Not really grey or white, but just a wash of that tone. Plus those are so much easier to keep looking good, as compared to a deep rich tone.
I don't like seeing a lot of differing wood tones. I was looking at kitchen flooring a few years ago (before grey was all that!) and realized I needed to not look at anything wood. I have original wood floors throughout my house, except for the kitchen. They do have a bit of an orange tone, but more of the old red oak tone. My kitchen cabinets are new oak, but I custom matched the stain to match the oak doors in my house (all floors and doors/trim) is 90+ years old. I still love my floors and cabinets. It stands the test of time. I made sure my cabinets were made in the style of the house. No rounded lines in them anywhere.

I find grey the most depressing of all 'colors'. I can't stand it anywhere, unless there is a lot of color to liven it up. But all grey? Not for me.

I feel like gray has been the trend for SO LONG that it’s on the way out. I’ve read several things from designers saying that gray is on the way out. It has been around for a while and I think the cycle is ending in many places, but there are still lots of people choosing gray. I wouldn’t, but if it’s what someone likes, it would work for them.

I actually really like gray, in moderation. But yea, that seems to be what is selling right now. I just am not a fan of EVERY SINGLE THING being gray. I'm actually not a fan of every single thing being any one color. LOL I don't know that I will want to buy a house with the gray wood floors. That is not my thing, and flooring is expensive to replace. I can paint walls and cabinets, so that doesn't bother me.

Several of those shows have had nothing but gray and white designs for years, especially that horrible couple that got divorced, Tarik (?) and Christina…they seem to have a very clear formula of replacing everything with either white or gray.

i've seen a bunch of designers say that grey is going out. the new color is back to natural, neutral beige and light brown. no more grey floors or walls because it was depressing people. no more crazy veined counter tops either. just classic elements.

I didn't like the all brown and I don't like the all grey. All brown is so dark and and all grey is so bleak. I like the coordinated mix of brown, white, touch of black or grey, a few woods and a pop of colour not a bright colour.

Gray is so far out. It’s still showing up in lower end new construction because all those gray materials and finishes are cheap now. Warmer tones are trending, and are a much more classic, timeless choice.
ETA it kills me to browse real estate listings and see the homes that people have “updated” by painting everything gray. Without ever stopping to consider how a cool gray clashes so painfully with outdated honey oak 😝😝😝

Grey has been popular for quite awhile. We redid our kitchen about 6 years ago, and we went with grey "wood" tile flooring and grey backsplash. Our bedspread is grey, but I have a couple of yellow pillows on the bed. I like grey. I feel like it is a good "white" to complement a lot of other colors.

This is my mother's apartment in a nutshell. And all her accessories, everything is gray. I mean, who has gray Fiestaware? She loves it! I think if I had to live there I would be the most depressed person there ever was. My house is all sorts of colors. I love it. Feels happy. All my main rooms coordinate, but there's color.
The good news is that I have enough vision, if I was searching for a house, I think I'd be able to look beyond it and figure out how to inject my own personality. But, but...that gray flooring you're talking about would be a huge no for me. I'm not sure I'd buy a house with that kind of flooring only to have to rip it out.

I love grey as a base colour to decorate around, it is so versatile and easy to add your own colours to. I went with grey floors and I have white & lilac in the lounge and white & sage green in the bedroom and the grey works well with both.

My house is 50 shades of gray AND I LOVE IT
I mean really love it.
I get accent colors in rugs, pillows, etc so there is still color BUT DID I MENTION I LOVE GRAY
And I will be sad when I have to choose a whole new color scheme to update the house one day.

I have always like lots of color, too. In the 90s when we built this house, the Waverly mix of florals, plaids and stripes was popular, and I did it all. Ivy wall paper in the kitchen. Striped in the hallway. Floral borders in all rooms. Plaid couch with floral and striped pillow. LOL And of course, they were all those 90s colors that were popular--hunter green, burgandy and mauve. LOL All that is gone from my house, but I still have colored walls, just softer colors. I will always love color. I can handle a home with gray walls because I can add my own color. And yes, I can often look past the ugly kitchen cabinets and wall colors I don't like because I don't mind painting. But floors are a different story. Although I'd rather have the gray wood floors than some of the other stuff I have seen, like pink carpet and even uglier carpet that looks like it has been there since the home was built in 1970. LOL

Maybe the problem for me is that so many of the homes I see online that are all gray are also mostly empty of furniture or anything that adds warmth and character. I know that is what you are supposed to do when you are selling a home, and thankfully, even if I end up with a home in all those gray colors, I have enough colorful stuff to satisfy my need for color. LOL

It might be regional, but I found that the two main colors that were prevalent when we were looking were either grey everything or cream/natural colors. My agent said younger people tend to gravitate more to the grey and older homeowners picked the creams and natural wood colors. When I see grey, I see grey skies. I have a hard time with that color. It depresses me. I can totally appreciate a well put together room in many colors, but if I couldn't paint something to get rid of the grey, I wouldn't buy it.
I have noticed on some of the HGTV shows that designers are talking about getting way from the grey.

Warmer tones are trending, and are a much more classic, timeless choice. THIS! If you go to the big box home stores, you will find tons of grey on sale everywhere in flooring, tiles, cabinets, etc. I am still seeing all grey in new construction around us in the Midwest, but I have been told that it is more because it is a way of keeping budgets down in an environment of spiraling construction costs than a designer choice. Higher end custom homes are going with warmer woods on the floors and colors (especially blues and greens) if the cabinets are painted.

I love gray, but don’t have it in my house. We have a more warm color scheme.
I like a lot of the gray schemes I see out there and would absolutely consider a gray-based room or two. What I don’t care for are the influencer-types whose entire houses are done in monochrome gray. Even the children’s rooms. The decorations are carefully planned to be these perfect pops of color. Even the toys look like they were chosen because they fit the scheme. It’s interesting to look at from a magazine/visual perspective but I can’t live real life like that. My home is uncluttered and clean but not 100% color-unified or perfect. It’s lived-in.

My first new-built home was gray with white trim. Everywhere. This was 1996 when beige was the neutral and everyone had oak cabinets in the kitchen. I remember having to pay extra for a white stove because everything was black or almond in the store. My kitchen cabinets were white and I had speckled black Formica counters. I will never NOT love a white kitchen. So bright and clean looking.
I would definitely draw the line at the gray barn wood looking floors. I cannot deal with the busyness, they overwhelm everything. Our wall colors are cool tones of blue and pale yellow. Our floors are stained oak that really need refinishing. Where they aren’t overly worn they have a red tone. However, our dining room floor was refinished with a cooler brown tone to match the rest of the cooler colors. I’m a traditionalist and spent the bulk of my young home owning years reading Southern Living. My aesthetic is at the less frilly end, but love me a nice big floral pattern.

My friend literally just did this in her new house. Gray flooring throughout. Gray walls throughout, gray cabinets and counters in the kitchen. SO.MUCH.GRAY. Ugh. Now they just painted the outside of their house too and you guessed it: gray. Looks just like a mausoleum from the outside and everyone on Facebook is all like, “Oh it’s so beautiful!” Um, no. Just no.
I will fully admit to liking warmer, natural tones in the sand, tan and brown range. I think part of that is because I live where it’s naturally gray and sad outside for months on end every year so I need to look at something with warmer tones on the inside of the house. I couldn’t live in a house that had all gray bases everywhere even if there were other things brought in to add some color. That just wouldn’t work for me at all.
