I know we had a thread about the heatwave in Europe, now how about the one here in the USA? I know we're a bit more equipped to deal with it here because we're more used to it and we have more AC... But still, CNN just showed a map and says it will be 113 in Phoenix! omg Do we have any Peas from that area? And, we may say we're a bit better off than Europe because of our AC but what about when the electricity fails as it's doing in more than one city because of the demand? I knew it was hot here in Northern Virginia today (91 with a prediction of 93) but that seems mild compared to that 113.

It's been brutal here this year (Houston). Yesterday was our 17th day of 100+ temps, with 100+ predicted the next 5 days. It's been 90+ since mid-May and there is no sign of it letting up. The current forecast is for possibly lower temps on Tuesday...of 98 degrees. Like that makes much difference! And, we may say we're a bit better off than Europe because of our AC but what about when the electricity fails as it's doing in more than one city because of the demand? This Texan worries about that daily.

I feel for those in the US and really anywhere in the world that doesn't have hot summers.
We are having our usual July with Temps between 89° and 100°.
August is when things get brutal with 100° - 115°. Early Sept can be that way too.
Stay safe!

It was 108 earlier this week in Amarillo so I’m glad we are having a cold front right now - it’s only going to 97 for the next couple of days.
Stay cool everyone!

We might hit in the 90s today, which will make 3 in a row and is classified as a heat wave. I do not have central air or a window AC unit. I don’t have a window unit by choice as I hate blocking my windows, I don’t like not being able to hear what is happening in the rest of the house, and we don’t typically get that many really hot and humid days. So while it is very uncomfortable, I really shouldn’t complain because it is by choice.

We've been pretty consistent with mid 80s and then a ninety for a day or two. We're usually all over the place with 70s-90s in the summer, so I think we're about normal.

I don’t think it’s outside of normal in southern Ohio. I think I must be part lizard because I absolutely love it. I don’t run my air during the day. It’s 88 here right now and I have my doors and windows open. It was 95 after work yesterday when I went for a run.
But I do feel for people who suffer in this heat or those who just don’t like it. I struggle through the dead of winter, so I understand it a bit. But I imagine it’s worse for people in the extreme heat.

It's 90 here with a heat advisory but I won't complain because first, I have central air and second it's not Texas hot.

honestly, 113F in Phx wasn't that bad. Everywhere has AC, and you *know* those temps are coming... you stay inside as much as you can (like if it was winter other places), if you're smart you have 90% UV blocking sunshades on your windows at home, you make sure to not touch anything metal outside, you stay out of the sun, and the lack of humidity makes those temps actually bearable. If it gets closer to the 120 mark (like 116, 117, etc.) they they may start having problems at the airport... not sure when the tarmac gets too hot for planes to take off and land.
There are also TONS of notifications about heat advisories and there are cooling centers open for people who don't have AC or are homeless, etc. to get out of the heat if possible (Libraries, etc.) and there are always bottled water campaigns, too.
Now, having those kind of temps in a place WITH humidity, too?!? That would suck, because the higher humidity makes it tough to breathe.

108 felt like 111 yesterday. Today is a little cooler with a high of 102. We may get some rain tomorrow! Praying!

Here in the mid Atlantic region of the U.S., temps have been soaring. Just a few minutes outside is too much for most people, as temps are in upper 90s and feel like 100s. I'm beyond grateful for A/C and I'm remembering that growing up, most folks didn't have it. I wonder if it has grown increasingly warmer here or if we had just learned to live with it.

I'm pretty sure 113 in Phoenix is normal for the summer. We've had a few hot days but nothing extreme for long periods of time. Fingers crossed it stays this way thru September.

It’s been an awful summer in the St. Louis area. Add in a nasty drought, I’m so ready for it to be over.
Between getting Covid beginning of April and breaking my ankle while recovering, I didn’t get a chance to build up tolerance, been laid up inside with a/c. I’ve started to walk around outside to challenge my ankle now that I can finally walk again, doesn’t take long for me to want to hide in my basement on the treadmill instead
I was reading about the summer of 1936 last night, at least it’s not that level.
ETA- 113 in Phoenix is pretty normal

Well, we're not at 113. But we are in the 90s and we don't have a/c. Add in humidity (which in our area can be very high) and the last few days have been pretty uncomfortable. Not dangerous---at least not for us, but not pleasant either.

AZ pea here. We do have days that are 113 and even up to 120. It is hot for sure. Most people do have AC. The town a little south of me just was w/o power for 3 days though, due to a monsoon storm. It was horrific.
I am a 911 dispatcher and we have had several recent deaths due to the heat. It really is a serious matter.

But still, CNN just showed a map and says it will be 113 in Phoenix! omg Do we have any Peas from that area? That's not unusual. And, we may say we're a bit better off than Europe because of our AC but what about when the electricity fails as it's doing in more than one city because of the demand? I have a big tank of diesel and PTO generators! But I sure hope I don't need it. It's not too hot here. We have had some warm days, but that's the case every summer. It's only 86 now, with 33% humidity. Which is AMAZING. And we had baling hay! PERFECT! We usually have super high humidity and higher temps. Sometimes it is almost hard to breath. I survived a lot of years without A/C - and I mean NO A/C, not a window A/C or anything. I remember one week it was so damn hot at the end of July. It was 110 outside and just over 100º inside my house. NO A/C, just fans. And humid. And I had 3 little kids to try and keep cool along with helping my husband trying to keep cattle cool with misters, so they didn't die. We survived. It sucked, but we survived and so did the people that came before us. I swear we are all pussy's now - I am not going to lie - I love having central air in my house now. It never seems as hot as it used to get! LOL

Our summer has been pretty cool for Portland, but next week will be upper 90s and 100 for a few days. Not looking forward to it. Our classroom stays cool, but it is hard to keep kids inside all afternoon. The worst part is that it doesn’t cool off at night so by day 2 and 3 it feels even hotter then it actually is. We close camp if it is over 100, but 99 and 100 we stay open.
I think anything above 75 is unnecessary, so I am not at all looking forward to it at all.

It’s in the 90s here, so I walked at 7 this morning, ran a few errands and then pretty much stayed in the ac. I do not like heat and humidity.

The problem with the Virginia heat is the accompanying humidity. However, 113 is hot regardless too.
I'm in Pittsburgh and this is my 4th summer (previously spent years in San Diego). The humidity is bad. We were living in a 2nd floor walk-up with no AC. We just moved to a house with central AC and it has helped al lot. Still, i tend to hibernate as much as possible. I love fall and winter though. Bring on the crisp temperatures and snow. (Few locals agree with me about that last part though...lol).
We are expecting temps in the 90's with some storms for the next few days. My bf is a life-long local and said they didn't typically get this weather until August. Even June was warm this year. People often complain that Pittsburgh has a lot of gray days (on par with Portland, OR) but it seems pretty sunny here most of the time from what I can see.
We didn't have AC in San Diego. The guy selling the house at the time said we wouldn't need it (we were about 10 miles inland). He lied. It gets uncomfortable in September-October.

It really is a serious matter. I can't imagine that!! once when our AC wasn't working it got up to about 90F in our house; that was bad enough for me. (we worried more about the dogs and cats than ourselves, lol- but when it's that hot, you can't even sleep.) I'm very sorry to hear about the recent deaths.

I feel like I can’t really complain because up until last week, we were having a really lovely low humidity moderate temperature summer. We’ve been having heat indices in the 100 degree area and dew points near 70 in CT the past week. I’ve been trying to get the puppy out early for a walk but my it’s too hot even at 9 am for my senior dog.

In addition to the extreme heat in Texas, we also have drought conditions (and yet high humidity/dew points). Super fun!

It's terribly hot and humid in South Carolina... and the A/C in one end of our house is not working. (Luckily the unit on the end with the bedrooms is running like a champ.)
The repairman came yesterday. The bad news? It needs a part that is located in the 'big city' an hour away. The good news? He's driving there this morning to pick his daughter up at the airport and will grab our part on the way. The bad news? It's a $400-500 part. The good news? We're still under warranty until August 14th! Whew. Squeaked by on that one. By later this afternoon, he should have that main unit back up and running.

Like other Mid-Atlantic region peas mentioned above, the accompanying humidity we typically have here makes a huge difference in how tolerable the hot air temperature feels. Here in Northern VA, on days like yesterday and today, it gets too hot very quickly if we try to do anything outside other than jump in a pool. Thankfully, most houses here do have central A/C (ours included).
I've been on vacation in areas with dry heat and was surprised to find out I was walking around in 110-degree heat with barely any issue. I mean it's definitely hot and uncomfortable, but it doesn't seem to completely drain my energy the same way that the high temp/high humidity combo does. Even 90s temps combined with high humidity will leave me completely tapped out.

I’ve been in North Carolina for a week and it’s been mid to upper 80s with humidity. However basically every afternoon thunder showers roll in and it’s been overcast most of the day which is nice.
I’m completely not used to this weather and keep thinking “could I live with this?” Lol. I do love how green and beautiful it is, but not sure about the heat.
Heading home to sfo soon where the fog has been keeping the area relatively cool in the 60s and 70s. However the land is completely parched and yellow due to drought. I read parts of the west coast are the only places currently not baking!
