cindytred Be sure the information you find online is first of all from a reliable source like the Mayo Clinic or MD Anderson. Second, when was it published? There are almost daily advances in cancer treatments. My DH was diagnosed with metastatic renal (kidney) cancer in April, 2007. He was given a year to live and told 2 years would be a lot. He just passed in February, so he lived nearly 15 years. This was entirely due to new medications and immunotherapy treatments. Please be sure you are being cared for at a major medical center. I know you are in Texas, so if you can get to MD Anderson, I recommend that. My DH's younger brother is being treated there after a misdiagnosis at a small hospital. You are in my prayers, dear Pea friend. I'm not in Texas anymore. Now I live in Pensacola, Florida. I bought a house here in April. My brother still lives in Houston so I could go back there for treatment. I don't know what to do. Cindy

Hi dear Cindy. I am so sorry to read this update but am comforted that you are a believer and are at peace (as much as one can be) with the path you are on. Try not to worry about others at this point. Remember not to sweat the small stuff (belongings, etc) and that it is all small stuff in the end. Focus on yourself and your relationships and your comfort. Continue to talk to God. He is listening and will guide you. Remember that even if it's not okay, it's okay, because of God. You are in His loving care at all times. I truly believe this. Cindy

So sorry to read your news Cindy. Remember treatments are evolving all the time and statistics are often far out of date. My mother was diagnosed with a very rare small cell cancer of the gall bladder in 2012. The average survival rate was 9 weeks and they only had records of 2 people surviving 18 months and both of those the cancer was found”by mistake” when they were having their gall bladders removed for other reasons. This was late October and the oncologist told us to consider ourselves lucky if she made it to Christmas and make the most of it because we definitely wouldn’t see Easter. That was 10 years ago and she is still with us. Keeping everything crossed for you I am so happy that you still have your mother with you and that she beat the odds. I am praying that I will too. Cindy

My husband was advised to have his biopsies reviewed by a second team to confirm staging and treatment options. Would your insurance allow a second opinion?Could that be a referral to MD Anderson? Sending caring thoughts. I will call on Monday and see if I can be referred to MD Anderson. Thank you Cindy

Cindy, I have a college friend who has been living with stage four colon cancer for eight years now, and shows no signs of stopping. Get back to Houston and see the docs at MD Anderson. You’ll be in my thoughts.

You’ll be in my thoughts. I'm so glad for your friend and to hear that is even a possibility! My brother woke me up calling from Houston at 3:30 am. He wants me to go back and stay with him while I get treatment at MD Anderson. I don't know how that's going to work out with my insurance - but I'm going to get the ball rolling on that first thing Monday morning. I am feeling hopeful now. Thank you so much EVERYONE! Cindy

You could get a second opinion about your treatment options at MD Anderson. Do you feel confident about your medical team? Are they listening to you and answering your questions? Is it a larger cancer center? Your confidence in your team should be a deciding factor, IMO. Only you can answer that. I realize the difficulties in traveling for treatment, for sure. We were comfortable at the original cancer center, but they wanted my DH to try a treatment at the University of Minnesota. I was impressed they sent us there, as it says a lot about them caring about what is best for the patient over keeping the patient in their system. We chose to stay with the U of M. ETA I just read your more recent post. You have a good brother. There is no harm in consulting with MD Anderson and then deciding your best option.

We have friends that went to MD Anderson for treatment and after the initial visit and testing, they received treatment at their local cancer center with Doctors at MD Anderson setting up the protocol.

My apologies, I read this the other night and couldn't find any words. But I had to come back and try again, although I will never get this right. As another cancer pea, I know exactly what you mean about feeling fine and not being able to take in what you're told. It's the weirdest feeling, isn't it? After a couple of dire months of repeated unsuccessful biopsies with the medics making teeth-sucking noises and head-on-one-side, sober and sympathetic faces while refusing to commit to an opinion, so far I'm a success story. I hope and pray that you will be as well. Put yourself in God's hands. He knows best. And if you want to vent/chat/question then please PM me.

I just read this as I’m not here too often. I just wanted to say that you are one of my favorite Peas ever. I have always admired your drive and your refusal to settle for less than what you deserve. I think that fighting attitude will get you through this and see you come out the other side like the true warrior you are. You are going to the near top of my prayer list. With the help of the Peas you are going to beat this with a vengeance!

I bought a house here in April. My brother still lives in Houston so I could go back there for treatment. I don't know what to do. Cindy When DH first went to Moffitt for a long battle with prostate/bladder cancer, it was treated completely differently. He had chemo and surgery to remove his bladder and prostate, so the cancer was finally gone.
I'd suggest that you at least go for a 2nd opinion at a cancer center. It should be covered under your health insurance. DH did this two times during his bladder cancer journey, which lasted about 10 years until we got to Moffitt.
His routine CT scan showed "something" so he had a PET scan and it lit up in his liver. They did a liver biopsy and we immediately found out that it was neuroendocrine cancer but his had a very short term diagnosis based on all of the testing. You find different information out when you go for a 2nd opinion, or you go to a good cancer center. Many people all over FL came to Moffitt. They house their patients (and loved ones) if you live too far away, if you'd prefer.
I wish you the best. Faith and a good attitude will carry you a very long way. Prayers going out to you. xoxo
ETA: I saw your newest update and I'm so happy for you. Anderson is supposed to be the #1 cancer center!!!!! I'm glad that you'll be with your brother too, for support, etc. I'm SURE that your insurance company will understand and accomodate you. Good luck with talking to them, and prayers and strength to you!!
