9/17/22 Update on Page 3
8/15/22 I talked to the doctor and he confirmed that they found cancerous cells. At this point the plan is the same: CT scan and blood work - then meet with the surgeon - remove the polyp and the area on each side of it. At that point they will find out what stage it is. If it is a stage 1 or 2 no further treatment is necessary. If is stage 3 or 4 then treatment will be required. I am doing better than I thought I would. I xanaxed up for the occasion and didn't feel blindsided by this information because I've had a few days to process it thanks to the report I found on my portal. I am a terrible worrier and I know that there is a lot more worrying ahead of me. I try to give it to God but that's really hard for me sometimes. Prayers and good thoughts are really needed.
OP: Last Monday (8/8) I had my first colonoscopy. The doctor came to me afterwards and explained that I had a large polyp the size of his thumb that he couldn't remove. He said I would have to have laparoscopic surgery to remove about 12" inches of my colon within the next 4 to 6 weeks. He also reassured my friend and I multiple times that he knows what cancer looks like and it is not cancerous. He said it is pre-cancerous and I am not to worry! He said he would call me Monday (8/15) to discuss the results of the biopsy.
On Friday(8/13) I logged onto my Patient Portal and snooped around and found the results dated the day the colonoscopy happened. His notes said it was adenocarcinoma of the colon and that another doctor agreed. Googling it explained it is a cancer diagnosis.
I don't understand why at 4:30 pm the doctor would tell me not to worry and that it is not cancerous. Then on that same day he dictated into my file that it is cancerous. Why didn't he tell me the truth or call me sooner? I am a nervous wreck and afraid to talk to him tomorrow because of what he is going to tell me.
If you pray, please say a prayer for me that I can handle whatever is to come. I am a Christian and I have given it to God - but I'm still scared as hell.
Cindy

I'm sorry you're having to face this uncertainty. I won't even attempt to get into the medical side - but just to say that my Dad had similar surgery (although for a different reason) at the age of about 75 and it went really well and he's still absolutely fine at 87 I'm sure there's an explanation but I send you good wishes and you can update us later

I just had a colonoscopy and a polyp was removed. So I was reading about types of polyps. Of course, I am obviously not a doctor, but from what I read, size of the polyp matters.
“Adenomatous (tubular adenomas) polyps: Adenomatous polyps are the most common type of polyp. Typically, they amount to about 70% of the polyps found in the colon. Most are not precancerous, but larger ones pose a high risk for becoming cancerous. These kinds of polyps are treated with removal during a colonoscopy and they require regular follow-up screenings to ensure they do not return.”
This is just a guess, so take it with a box of salt. Your doctor found a big polyp in a tricky area of pf the colon. Could it be that he is acting with an abundance of caution because the polyp is so big?

One of my BFFs had similar surgery 10 years ago. She's doing great. She had routine colonoscopies from a young age due to her family history.
I hope you have great results and a quick recovery.

That would scare me, too. But the doctor was probably right with what he told you. He can remove the growth. I hope you get answers and your procedure goes smoothly.

This could be a total shot in the dark but he may have put that info in your chart so that insurance doesn't kick it back and deny a procedure.

Sending prayers! My brother had the same issue when he was in his 50’s. They removed the whole polyp and he is fine. He was also told that they needed to remove some colon, but In the end, they got the whole polyp with no colon removal. You might want to ask about that possibility? In any case, we are here for you!

I'm glad they found it, because now it can be treated. My FIL had several polyps, some big and some small, and he had them removed at age 80. He wasn't even too sore afterwards, and he's a medical panicker! I will pray that your procedure will be as straightforward as his was.
Stay positive Cindy. State of mind is important with healing. You will get through this.

Of course you would worry after seeing that — who wouldn’t? I hope it’s just written that way so your medical insurance will cover the upcoming procedure to remove it.
please let us know what results you receive today — and thank goodness you went for a screening to catch this!

My stepdad had the same kind of polyp. His was considered “precancerous” or stage 0 because it was contained to the polyp and did not intrude into the lining of the colon. He had surgery to have the polyp removed and they took a small part of the colon to be safe and make sure there were clear margins and that was the end of it. No radiation, no chemo. He has to have a colonoscopy every 6 months for the first 3 years then once a year the rest of his life.

DH had a similar situation early this year. Went in for his colonoscopy, found a polyp which turned out to be cancer. Much panic and another procedure to biopsy the area ensued and that was that. They were able to get clean margins from the polyp site and confirmed it hadn't spread anywhere else. Colonoscopy follow up yearly but that's it. Fingers crossed they can get clean margins and follow up is not more invasive than yearly testing.

I'm so glad you went in for your screening. Please keep us posted! Not to be negative but that isn't likely. A medical chart is a legal document and has to be in compliance on so many levels. (From a coder certified in oncology and hematology, who worked in medical oncology on coding charts, so that opinion isn't coming out of nowhere). My dad had colon cancer so I do have some familiarity. I think you'll be fine, if it's caught so early (cancer or precancerous). Wishing you all the best!

Sounds like your doctor is doing due diligence by removing the polyp and a possible piece of your colon in order to keep you healthy for many decades to come. I'm thinking healthy thoughts for you.

Praying for you.
I will add, this is a similar experience our neighbor had. After the polyp was removed she needed n further treatment and it has been at least 7 years with no further problems.

oh my gosh Cindy! I pray that they caught this early early and you will not need further treatment. Oh girl I feel for you, so so scary. You hang on to prayer and your loved ones for strength and bravery to deal with this head on.
You try and just focus on this being a positive outcome (thank God they caught it!) and try to refocus from the negative/scary/unknown. <hugs>
