Dh and I were watching a tv show and were discussing that when characters on TV get chinese food takeout they often eat right from the container. We don't do this. We take our portions out of the container and put on a plate or into a bowl. How about you?

nooo!! especially not Chinese- I need a plate, so I can mix everything together with the rice. Plus, I usually get an extra container of veggies, or something else extra, so I have to have it all together on a plate. My DH gets his Chinese so spicy that sometimes the chili oil will eat right thru the styrofoam container!
(I've even put McDonald's or a Subway sandwich onto a plate before, lol. But then I'm also one of those weirdos who eat pizza with a knife and fork, so...)
I also don't like reheating from styrofoam take-out containers, and most of the time I'll put the leftover food onto a plate or in a microwave-safe container before reheating. My DH uses the styrofoam container, and lots of times the styrofoam starts melting thru before the food is hot.
ETA: another pet peeve of mine from TV shows is when the person is carrying a styrofoam drink container and it's OBVIOUS that it's empty/ there's no liquid in it. You can totally tell because the person will hold it differently.

Depends on the food for me. If it's a complete meal within the container I will eat from the container, if it's just family eating, but if there are various items in a number of containers I'll use a plate. DH always uses a plate.

I typically don't eat directly out of the container - I put my portion onto a plate. Often it's because I'll be saving the other half of it for lunch the next day, or because we're eating family style (back when we still had kids living at home, LOL) and sharing our meals.
DH usually does eat his out of the container, but that's because he eats his entire portion sans snow peas (which he passes over to me - yum), and no one else shares his meal. He always gets the same (small portion of moo goo gai pan - not large enough for leftovers) and I (and other family members if they're eating with us) like spicier entrees.

For me it depends a bit on what I am eating and if I am alone. Something ‘all in one’ like a Pad Thai, and I am eating alone, I might eat straight from the container. If DH and I are together, then we will be sharing, so on plates. Also on plates if it is is something that I am eating with rice, like a curry or stir fry.

Depends on the food for.me.as well. With Chinese there is always so much food and we share, so plates for that. With Thai food or Hawaiian we just eat.out of the box thing because we don't share that. My husband often gets meat with his and stuff I am allergic to, so we keep that separate. I don't get eating out of the Chinese style boxes at all, that looks awkward and I like my Chinese food with the rice.

I gotta eat my food together, not mixed together on the same plate but I gotta have more than one item per bite.
So eating out of a container doesn't work for me, unless its spaghetti or something like that. But a protein like a meat, I gotta eat it with a veggie or a carb.
I never thought of it but yep, that's what I do. So no, I don't eat out of a container UNLESS its the special fried rice with meat in it.

Chinese takeaway here comes in plastic tubs and is rammed in, there’s no room to mix anything or add the rice. So we always use dishes.

Yes. But I almost always order the combo dinners which come in divided styrofoam containers. Dh usually does the same. DD usually just gets soup and rice and mixes the rice in with the soup which she eats out of the container.
We rarely order anything that comes in those fold out boxes. I think we used to years and years ago and I imagine we put on plates because it would be weird not to as you need your rice or noodles in with the main item.

Eating off styrofoam gives me the shivers, but I'd eat out of containers made from cardboard or plastic.

We laugh at the eating out of Chinese food containers all the time. Who the heck is eating an entire quart at a sitting? I have eaten leftover Chinese food cold from the container though.
As for other carryout containers, it depends on the food and the container.

Most of the time, I transfer the food to a plate but I'll eat something like fries or pasta from the container.

I eat out of containers as much as possible. As the sole dishwasher in the house, I strive to wash less dishes. My Chinese food is almost always from Panda Express, so it’s packaged for one eater. In all my 50+ years of life, we’ve gotten family style Chinese takeout just once. And that one time, we did eat off regular plates.

I transfer to a plate and use a real fork/knife. I transfer my leftovers to a storage container and when I eat those the next day, transfer them to a plate.
Dh will eat from the container and store his leftovers in the same container for lunch the next day.

Not with the Chinese boxes - those have multiple servings and would be shared. I did, however, just eat my leftover lunch out of last night's take home box. It was, in theory, a single serving that wasn't going to be shared.

I guess it depends on a combination of a few things--will there be leftovers, do I need a knife, the type of container, if I'm eating at the table or in front of the TV. If I would answer yes for most of the questions then I use a plate.
However, my most frequently eaten takeout meal is sushi and I eat out that out of the container because it's a nice plastic container.

When we order from a Chinese restaurant (not fast food), we order individual items that come in their own containers. We share all the food, so we take our portion and put it on a plate. We don’t eat directly out of the containers like they do on TV. I think, even if the container was just for me, I would still put it in a plate/dish.
If we get Chinese food from somewhere like Panda Express, where your entire meal comes in those divided containers, we do eat out of those. Sometimes, if we aren’t too hungry, SO and I will share one order, then one of us uses a plate and the other eats out of the take-out plate.
The order from a restaurant usually lasts us a couple of nights. Food from Panda Express is just one meal so we eat out of the divided plates they give us.

Our local places don't really put things other than rice in the boxes anymore. They come in plastic containers. We tend to plate our items.
But I swear things like lo mein taste better out of the box.

I've never had a single-serve Chinese food dish. When we get it, it's always for a number of people, and each person puts their portions on a plate.

I have always wanted to just once eat Chinese food right from the takeout box like they do on TV and in the movies.
However, our Chinese food has only ever come in the white Styrofoam boxes and there just isn't anything cool about that.

This is one of the many reasons that I just don’t understand the appeal of takeout.
I am not going to pay for restaurant food and then also have to do dishes.
We will do fast food or we will eat at a restaurant.

Always use a plate unless I am finishing out a little bit that is left in the container.

Chinese takeout containers with the little wire handle are meant to be turned into a plate. You just pop off the wire handle and spread out the box into a plate. However, there's only one place I can think of here that puts the rice in with the rest of the dish. Usually the Chinese takeout I order separates the rice from the main dish, so it makes more sense to put on a plate or in a bowl.

I have never heard of that before, or seen it done. It wouldn’t work too well with dishes that have sauce/liquid in them. I can see how someone thought of that after the fact, but I don’t think that was the intent when the boxes were originally invented.

We always use dishes for Chinese take out. We each typically get two to three meals out of each dish so eating out of the container would be kind of gross. If I get a small soup, I will sometimes eat it directly from the container.

We use plates unless the take-out item comes in some sort of single serve plastic/cardboard bowl. For instance, a salad, or a single serving of soup.
