...but as I got out of my car, a lady drove up and was waiting for me to clear the spot between my car and the next car.
We were the only ones on that row, with a space between my car and the only other car. Not prime spots, not the most convenient or desirable. Not the closest to the destination building (the post office....)
In a parking lot with 30+ spaces and maybe 7 cars, she was waiting to insert her car where I was standing, between 2 parked vehicles.
People are funny.

I think I suddenly would have needed to reorganize my car and search under my seat and clean the driver side rear seat and drop my keys and have to search for them and all manner of other things.

As is usually the case with me, I didn't think of that until after I had hustled out of her way to let her park.

Yeah that is strange.
However I will admit I sometimes realize (after the fact) that I have picked spaces really close to people, or next to cars that are all crooked when there were much better or more open spaces…but at the time I just was focused on parking my car where and how I was comfortable with whatever else was going through my brain. I definitely prefer spaces on my left to pull into.
Sometimes it is like my brain goes on parking pilot and I just pick Willy Nilly. But if I am really thinking about it I do try to get away from people. Hahaha.

I think my car calls up “playmates” when I park her. No matter how vacant the lot when I park, there’s ALWAYS a car beside her when I return.😃😃😃

Usually a F-150 too. I joke that I am the truck magnet. Sometimes I don’t care and will park next to a truck because I know they’ll find me anyways. 😂 I am so glad my car has a backup camera!

She may have felt safer parking between 2 cars.
I park next to a car if the lot is quite empty for safety.

Or like you'd be less alone if approached by an unsafe person?

I will wait on the sidewalk or wait in my car, until I see other people that are coming or going....so that I am walking with someone nearby. Safety in numbers type of thing. I think someone is less likely to approach an individual, if there are others nearby.

Sure. Person could have sensory need being met or Autism trait where they like to park close. Or simply safety by being next to another vehicle. Harder to grab when you are protected on both sides along with your own vehicle door. Lots of reasons why someone would park next to another vehicle in an open lot. Nothing odd or strange about it to me.

If the lot was quite empty, I'd probably pull for a spot as close to the front door as possible. It's interesting how we all have different perspectives on things.

When my kids were small, I'd park either waaaaay out in the far reaches of the parking lot. And I can't tell you how often, someone would come all the way out to the outer reaches of the lot and wait to park right next to me while I was wrangling kids, belts, car seats, packages, diaper bags, shopping carts, etc. And I'd look around and think "Why?" If they wanted to be near someone, there were oodles of spaces available where they didn't have to wait, and if they wanted to be away from everyone, they were going about that wrong.

Around here, that would be a possible sign of someone wanting to break into your car or steal your catalytic converter.

A similar thing happened to me the other day in a cafe. I got my coffee and sat down and then a few minutes later a guy asked if he could take the seat right next to mine. I said sure but I looked around and the entire cafe was empty with available seats - then he sat next to but across from me so we were basically staring at each other. Awkward lol.

Maybe it’s a pack thing, left over from our Neanderthal DNA? Gotta stick with the pack?
We were in an empty movie theater once. Completely empty. The film was about to begin, and there was no crowd waiting. 2pm in the afternoon. A group of four came in, wandered down the aisle, and sat RIGHT IN FRONT OF US. The entire huge theater was empty, and I get this big fat head right in front of me.
We moved back a couple of rows, but it was just so weird, and IMHO, rude.

He was being polite by asking, but he can sit anywhere he wants to.

Years ago, I had something similar happen to me. A lady about my age parked right next to me in a mostly empty section of the Target parking lot. She struck up a conversation as we walked towards the store. Next thing I knew she was complimenting me on my "beautiful skin" and asked me what my makeup routine was.
I suspected she was trying to sell me beauty products so I looked at her and said "soap and water." I then quickly veered right as we walked inside the store because I could tell she was headed to the left. I thought that would be the end of it. Oh no, she wasn't going to give up. She cornered me in the dog food section and offered to come to my house and give me a free make-over. I couldn't think of any snarky come back so I just politely told her I wasn't interested.
I am convinced she parked next to me on purpose so that she could try and sell her beauty products to me.

I don’t go to movies in movie theaters anymore, but one of the last times I did I had the most bizarre experience ever. It was a 10 am showing. I was literally the only person in the theater. I was waiting for a friend. There were no assigned seats and I was not sitting in handicapped seating or any other special seat. An older man and woman came into the theater, walked right up to me and asked me to move! Wtf? I said no. So they asked if I could move my purse. I said no, my friend is coming and I’m saving her a seat. They stood there talking and fretting and wondering what they should do and finally sat down next to my purse while giving me dagger eyes death stares. My friend walked in, made a funny face, and loudly asked why I would sit next to people in an empty theater. I loudly answered back that I was there first.

sometimes when I'm driving in a parking lot, I am just sort of 'following' the car in front of me... perhaps she was only paying half-attention to the rest of the parking lot, and ended up next to you sort of absentmindedly?
It annoys me more in the movie theater- but we choose a particular row and seat (not too close, not too far, sort of in the middle) for a reason, so it stands to reason that other people have similar reasoning.
eta: bwahaha! I had no idea when I wrote that sentence that I used the word 'reason' so many times. oops!

I purposely park far away with open spots on either side so if one person decides to park next to me, hopefully one side stays open so I can open my door wide enough to get my toddler into his car seat. Even better if I can find a spot at the very end of the line so there’s at least one open side.

Our movie theater you pick your spot when you pay... we pick and empty spot on the map and whoever comes in later always chooses the spot right in front of us... no matter how many seats are empty.
HS Orchestra concert, giant empty auditorium, family of noisy tall people sits right in front of me.
Park my (wide) car farther away so I don't have to squeeze between two other cars, and can get my door open, big ass trucks (parked backwards which for some reason makes it even harder for me to see to back out) parked on both sides...
When I had younger kids who took five minutes each to get in their car seats, cars would wait for me to load up instead of finding an empty spot, it was annoying!
Maybe I have some kind of magnetic super power, people are drawn to me...

I agree with this. I think a movie theater is a bit different than a parking lot because people do have a certain area they want to sit in. Many like the middle for viewing and surround-sound hearing. Most people like to sit in the middle of a theater. I know I do. ETA - We've been in the situation where we were the late comers to an empty theater. The middle middle was already taken. So we picked some middle seats that were either a couple of rows above or below the people already there. Not right up against them, but still close enough to be near the middle.

I'm sure some people think that about me... I try to park in the same spot at work everday. I like the spot because it means I can see my vehicle from my office. Sometimes the spots and/or adjacent spots are full. These are likely visitors to the building. I still try to park as close to my preferred spot as I can, even though there are plenty of empty spots. Too far left and the building blocks my view, too far right and a tree is in the way.
