The camera lens thread got me thinking about this. What kind of stores are disappearing around you? - We used to have at least 2 camera stores that I knew of in the north part of San Diego county. Now, we have none. There are still two down in the city of San Diego. - Other than Goodwill, we don't have many used paperback book stores left in my area. There was one street in a nearby city that used to have about 5 of them on one street. I used to go to one that would give you credit when you bought in books. That placed closed and I still had credits left. - Music stores (that sell music, not instruments). Even the CD section at my local Target has shrunk considerably. We surprisingly though have a number of instrument shops around. - Independent art and craft stores. Not just scrapbooking stores, but even independent art stores are disappearing. Had a really good one nearby. They sadly closed up. I think they overexpanded their operations (built their own store), and that hurt them. I loved going to these specialty stores to shop. Now, we have to go to all the big box stores (Michaels, Best Buy, etc.) and they just don't have the same expertise with their products.

Seems like its a hit and miss here with small shops, but we have lost 3 Village Inn, 1 JC Penny, 1 Bed Bath and Beyond, 1 Pier 1 Imports, the only Casual Male XL, 1 Dunkin, 2 Great Harvest Bread, 1 each of Pendleton, LOFT and Talbots, and 1 Pita Pit. I'm sure there are more and we are a very large city too. Not as huge as San Diego, but over 500,000.

I don't know if the were here before I moved and closed or not but fabric stores are not as was to find. Not joanns or hobby lobby, but actual fabric stores/quilt stores. There is a big one in San diego about 45 min from me but nothing close to where I live. I have tried to do online shopping for fabric but its just not the same

We used to have several good quilt/fabrics stores up here. All gone.

The more recent ones I’ve noticed are Pier One, one of the Tuesday Morning stores on my end of town closed during the pandemic, some local Hallmark stores, and pretty much all of the scrapbook and rubber stamp stores (but that was well over a decade ago). All the fabric stores other than JoAnn’s closed a long time ago. Hobby Lobby also sells some fabric but I try to avoid going there.

Strip mall after strip mall by me are over half empty. Restaurants have closed.
Just read the CFO of Bed Bath and Beyond jumped from the 18th floor of a building in NYC.

Asking because that was a beautiful spot where I lived on LI: www.lessings.com/corporate/hotel.aspx I'd be surprised if they were a chain, but very interested!
As for stores/shops here in FL, we lost Michael's a few years back + Bed Bath & Beyond. We lost Pier 1 here but I did spot it in other towns. We lost JC Penney, Sears and an entire small mall. It's sad. Many smaller restaurants here also closed, as did smaller shops, yet the guns/ammo places are ALWAYS open!

Oh wow, that would have been a nice place to have here. I should have put my numbers in (3). Village in is a chain like Denny's.

snyder : Thanks, it's a gorgeous, historical place in a beautiful area of LI/NY. My son worked for a famous chef at their Mirabelle restaurant, Guy Reuge, and worked catering too. He learned a lot. What's funny is that many years before that, I made his recipe for a Buche de Noel (chocolate log roll) every Christmas and then my son worked beside him. Small world! Sorry about your shops closing down there.

Not much really, though some things are closing nationwide (like we lost Pier One some time ago).
I went to Bed Bath & Beyond a couple months ago to get something that I didn't want to wait for shipping for, and they had practically no stock, just display items. I wondered why they were even open.
We have in the general metro area lots of things like record stores, things people with disposable income like.
We did lose our dollhouse store though and that makes me pretty sad.
We seem to have an abundance of brew pubs, more than you might think one area would need, but I really like when they have food trucks and live music and bonfires and things.
I don't know if there is an art store in the area besides the usual craft store chains. I love art supplies.

-independent scrapbook stores -music stores -clothing boutiques -specialty stores
Basically, there is one or two major chain stores dominating the field for a type of product. Not a variety of choices and certainly not as many mom and pop stores to compete against them. Rents and other costs of doing business are too high for smaller businesses. Basically, if Amazon can underprice you, you are on very shaky ground.

Everything you have listed in the OP we have either lost or never had. The closest town to where I live is 15 miles away and it surprises me that that are not, and seemingly has never been, any type of art, craft or fabric store. Not even a Michaels.

My favorite consignment store just announced they were closing as the owner is retiring. They had a buyer but their realtor decided not to renew their lease and they couldn't find another suitable location. It is an hour away but is the only consignment store I've ever made any money selling at and I liked to shop there also.
Steinmart stores closed during the pandemic and I still miss them. If you didn't have one they were an upscale TJ Maxx type store.
A good quilt shop closed and I'm worried about some of the others as the owners are getting into retirement age.

Independent: Scrapbook Book Used book Home decor
Chains (some or all the stores closed): Woolworth (decades ago, but one of my favorites) KMart Some JC Penney Sears Tower Records Hickory Farms Millers Outpost. They were bought out or rebranded(not what happened) and the "new" version of the store sucked Borders Books Mervyns
There's more, but I can't think of them right now.

Here in southern England it’s the independents that are falling. Our wonderful market town with a history back to 1066 at least is now dominated by charity shops, coffee shops and estate agents.

So many stores. Lots of chain stores. The stores I most miss are the bookstores (Barnes and Nobles and Borders) and the independent bookstores. There was one called "If Wishes were Horses" that was targeted at children. Made me think of the You've Got Mail bookstore. Also lovely gift stores, scrapbook stores, music stores, restaurants, ice cream shops. I do miss Pier One. While a chain store I loved some things I found there.

I'm pretty rural so we didn't have a ton to begin with. Michaels closed in Jan 2020 I think it was. There were two LSS but they are both long closed. We still have HL and an independent quilt shop.
The 'mall' is pretty empty - Payless closed, Goody's closed, Michaels closed, Hallmark closed, the military recruiters left, the men's suit place closed, Buffalo Wild Wings closed - we still have TJMax, JCP, Maurice, Catos, Shoe Depot, a sports store, Claires, not sure what else
The used book store closed. Restaurants open and close regularly - both chains and locals.

Payless shoes is the store closure that hurts the most. You can’t find good cute affordable shoes anymore.

The same as other places. I miss scrapbook stores but don’t really need anything and I usually just buy supplies from myself CTMH. I rarely find anything I like at Michael’s, HL or Joann’s. I do order from scrapbook.com. We had a yarn store but that closed at least five years ago the land was bought for another project snd they cleared the stores but haven’t done anything since . Fabric stores closed but still have an online store. They were too $$ anyway at least for me. We still have several specialty stores but the owners are getting older so I wouldn’t be surprised to see them close within 5-10 years as that happened to our camera store snd a few restaurants. Others have opened in their space but I miss the old restaurants. They new are just not as good. Our strip malls are filling back up. They weren’t full when we moved here eight years ago but the one main one will be 95% full soon. Several new areas have built snd opened to. Steinmart and pier 1 are being filled with a sketchers store snd a I think Steinmart is becoming Burlington. Kind of looking forward to checking it out. I think we are getting a five below to. We try and buy local and small when we can but sometimes they are just do much more. Farmers markets here can be insanely expensive. I like to go occasionally and go buy local honey snd grab juice from one of the stands. I would love to buy more local. We have a tea snd spice store snd I like them but it’s $$. Lots of local wineries, olive oil, breweries. We try and avoid chains for eating out most of the time. We have a lot of good food here.

More than 10 years ago we had a really good scrapbooking only store that closed and we also have a larger local craft store that is still open. They sell scrapbooking stuff, fabric, decor, pretty much any craft item. We also have Hobby Lobby, Michael’s and Joann’s but I prefer the local store (better selection and it’s locally owned and not a chain). I don’t quilt but I think we also have a nice quilting shop in town.
There used to be a good record store but I believe it closed. Can’t say I ever went there.
We still have a small camera store. I used to go there for film developing and have wondered how they stay open, especially because when I was there last month he said they had a hard time getting stock lately. I went over the weekend and he told me he sold the last of each of two cameras that he suggested to me that morning. If that is true, that seems like a pretty good business day for him before noon. There were no other customers there either time. But they must do decent business to stay open.
We had pier one, dress barn, lane Bryant close like everywhere else. But we also had H and M close.
The closest outlet mall has two separate areas and the smaller side has been almost completely empty since Covid. Several other stores on the main side have also closed.
Subway in my small town closed and Little Caesars has limited hours, I think due to staffing for both.

Herberger's closed in 2018, and I really miss it. I liked shopping there, and really loved their displays and shopping there during the Holiday Season. We lost Sears years ago and Kmart in 2020. Now, the north Taco Johns, near the university has closed. This leaves even fewer food options on the north side of our town.

Payless shoes is the store closure that hurts the most. You can’t find good cute affordable shoes anymore. Agree. My feet splay funny when I walk, so I always wear down the outer heels of my shoes first. They get to a point where if you put the shoes on a table, they flop to the sides because of how uneven the wear is. But this means I can't really buy shoes for the long haul because the unevenness eventually starts messing with my hips and back. It sucks to spend over $50 on shoes that are only good for 6 months. Anyway, I've found some success with various skechers slip ons... by shopping QVC's clearance section.

Strip mall after strip mall by me are over half empty. Restaurants have closed. Just read the CFO of Bed Bath and Beyond jumped from the 18th floor of a building in NYC. I just read about that too. They are laying off 20% of the workforce and closing a bunch of stores. One of the ones near me closed about 6 months ago.

I’ve been wondering why the BBB stock went up so much, so suddenly. Especially because it doesn’t seem to be a very busy store. Now it all makes sense. He was involved in a pump and dump stock scheme.

I so rarely shop in actual stores so I'm not sure. lol. The only one that really impacted me was ACMoore. We have Michael's, but it's junky compared to the ACMoore that was here.

Since 2020 our little village and neighbouring town have opened a second drug store, a make your own wine and beer store and a restaurant that was take out only, a soup and sandwich lunch only place. This from towns that only have a bank, post office, gas stations, grocery store and a few professional buildings. It's more growth than we've had in 15 years.
In the city I've seen things like Pier 1 (I didn't know they were online, just thought they all closed), Gap, David's Tea, Bouclair, Le Chateau. I was in Bed Bath and Beyond this summer and it was as full as always. A few closures and a few new things have replaced them, getting a second La Vie En Rose location, an eye doctor opened a second location, a few clothing stores.

Like everywhere else, we lost our dedicated scrapbook stores. We also lost several of our quilting and sewing stores, including most of a local chain of fabric stores that was similar to Joann Fabrics but carried the lines you would find in quilting and sewing boutiques.
The big thing we have lost here have been children's clothing and shoe stores. Some of the chains collapsed completely; some became small departments inside adult stores; some department stores reduced their children's clothing departments and eliminated their children's shoe departments. It has become a lot more difficult to do anything but order online, which is mostly fine, but inconvenient if a good fit matters and/or if you aren't 100% sure of shoe size (or if your kid is particular about how the shoes feel on their feet) or if you need something immediately.

We never had the normal boom stores. None of the new shopping centers built to bring them in. Only some really old shopping centers and a struggling downtown. In the 40 year old mall, Sears and BonTon closed (chains folded), JC Penny closed. Three anchor stores gone. Left with Walmart. There is a Books a Million, Ulta, TJMaxx (last two are relatively new). JoAnns has been here forever. The camera shop closed when Jay was in middle school and he graduated in 2015.
Dunkin’ Donuts opened a few months ago. Starbucks opens in a couple of weeks. I much prefer the local mom & pop coffee shops. Hope they survive.
Stores left are Kohl’s, Lowes, Staples. We have to travel for most everything else.
We are fortunate to have an amazing yarn store. She was even able to grow her business through the covid shutdowns.
There are a few amazing food trucks that opened and thrived over the last 2 years. One is moving into a place he just purchased. He’s presently located in a rental store front. Food is incredible. The other food truck is hibachi. Hope they can eventually find a store front. The lines continue to be long. Food is amazing.
Panera, Olive Garden, Red Lobster and the like have never opened here. Last chain to come in was Buffalo Wild Wings. 🤣
