RIP Queen Elizabeth II. It’s surreal, even knowing it was coming soon-ish. Definitely the end of an era. I cannot imagine anyone surpassing her dedication to her duty and oath to the people and countries she represented.
I’m just sorry her remaining years were full of such familial strife.

Did Harry make it before she died? As of 30 minuets ago, no. About 20 min ago is when they announced it, so that didn't leave much of a window for him to arrive. BBC said she passed in the afternoon. I don’t know what time it is now, but I think Harry probably left after she passed.

I'm just catching up and admit I felt concern when Liz Truss and Boris Johnson traveled to her at Balmoral instead of the Queen meeting them at Buckingham Palace. Such a sad day.

Why oh why am I in such tears??? I’m not British. But goodness. This news is so sad. Same here. I think it's because she was just such a gracious person, a true public servant, and because there's such history in her. Think about what she's seen in her lifetime. Also, for me personally, my mother (born in Australia), LOVED the Queen. My mom died this past July and I'm glad that she died first.

I did and I admit my initial thought was that it was making it all about her but that was unkind. It could be that she DIDn't want it to be all about her so is keeping away. I didn't think that about Kate, who presumably is keeping life stable for the children, so I shouldn't think that of Meghan. Maybe Kate and Meghan will travel up together, if necessary. Why would her staying behind be making it all about her? My first thought was that she knew she'd be a distraction to the press (who hate her!) and that she wanted Harry to be able to spend whatever time he could with his family distraction free. The disdain for Megan (not talking specifically about you gilly, just in general) never ceases to amaze me. ETA: I hadn't finished all the posts before posting, so didn't see she has officially passed. Very sad. I wonder if they asked her to stay back because Kate also stayed back, and just have the direct blood relatives there. I thought Meghan and Harry were already in Germany, but I guess not. I am not sure how soon a funeral will happen, but I assumed the Sussex children were not travelling with their parents - I wonder if H&M will go back and bring them to the funeral, or if they are too young?

I am so terribly sad about this. I'm a regular old American with no UK ties except some travel. But I had - no, have - so much respect for her, and frankly, just kind of liked her.

Although it wasn't just blood relatives as the spouses of her children are there, too. William and Harry were the only grandchildren that traveled to Balmoral which is fitting as the sons of the new King. I expect them to be standing by his side when he speaks to the nation.

This is exactly what was trying to say and maybe did not express it very well. Queen Elizabeth II has been "in my life" longer than my parents. It sounds so odd hearing the broadcasters saying King Charles III no matter how aware I am of this happening.

My bloodline comes 100% from England and the UK so I claimed her as my Queen. I loved her so much and I am absolutely heartbroken.
What a hard day for the Royal family this must be.

Although it wasn't just blood relatives as the spouses of her children are there, too. I suspect they may have decided to limit the spouses to those of her children. I think many of us (at least not in the UK) that she had several grandchildren, who had many spouses and a fair number of great-grandchildren. I suspect they drew the line at that spot, particularly when Kate was unable to attend. It's also possible that Kate was flat-out not invited, not due to any kind of politicking but simply as part and parcel of figuring out how much time and energy the Queen had. And I'm glad it worked out that Harry was there, even though I strongly suspect he didn't quite make it in time to see her still alive based off the timing of the announcement. I do think he loves his Granny, and I think he would have been devastated had he been elsewhere. In fact, I'm glad they were all nearby and not traveling or anything. I know she had not been as robust lately - I wonder if a lot of schedules had been subtly manipulated so that family was able to be closer to home. Wouldn't someone or another usually have been traveling somewhere? Did I miss anything about the other grandchildren? If they were just unable to come, or if perhaps the invitation pool at that level was restricted to William and Harry as sons of Charles? I don't know why I'm so invested in this.

According to the BBC at 7:51 London time, Harry has not arrived yet, but is expected soon. We are actually in the UK now and were actually at Buckingham palace today a tour. Word was going around that the immediate family were all making it way to Balmoral. But we were on the train coming back when the news broke. ETA: 7:56pm and Harry has just arrived.
