Why oh why am I in such tears??? I’m not British. But goodness. This news is so sad. Same here. I think it's because she was just such a gracious person, a true public servant, and because there's such history in her. Think about what she's seen in her lifetime. Also, for me personally, my mother (born in Australia), LOVED the Queen. My mom died this past July and I'm glad that she died first. I have a similar situation. My mom was English and loved the Queen, and even resembled her slightly, and passed a couple of years ago. She would have been so upset if she was still alive today. I can’t help but think of losing my mom today too.

I found this article about Charles’s succession to be very interesting and it answers some of the questions peas have been asking today - www.bbc.com/news/uk-59135132

ETA: 7:56pm and Harry has just arrived. Oh, I thought I'd read he'd arrived and the announcement was made 10 minutes later or so. That's sad, though at least it would have to be better than being half a world away. The BBC announcer was quite scathing that the announcement had been made before Harry got there. But the announcement was made shortly after William, Andrew, Edward, and Sophie arrived.

She had the same silver hair, in the same hairstyle (typical of women their age), a similar smile, and wasn't very tall. She was also almost the same age (born seven months after the Queen).

I heard right before leaving to pick up one of my kids from school. On the way home they wanted to run into the store for a few things, and I sat in the car reading the news of The Queen's passing & crying. her death is the end of an era, but also the end of a long, well-lived life; and I think part of my upset is that I am at an age where I am seeing more and more ends of long, well-lived lives these days.

I dont think King Charles would have made that announcement like he did without thinking it through, including if they should wait or not.

I agree, but the photos of Harry in the car were heartbreaking. He had a special relationship with his grandmother

It's a sad day for sure. I'm glad she is at peace and with her husband though. I do wonder why they announced her death before Harry got there. NBC news had a British reporter say that the Queen's children are required to be present at death so that they can kiss the King's hand. British peas, is this true? Maybe that's the case for the next line to be King as well. Since Harry gave up his title, they may have not felt his presence was necessary? I find that incredibly sad if that was their reasoning. Even if he isn't in line to be King, he still loved his grandmother.

It's such a bittersweet day. I have shed a few tears watching the news coverage today, but it's also a good time to pause and be thankful for all that she gave to the world during her historic reign. My most prominent memory of the queen was her public address at the beginning of COVID. Although I live in the US, her message was exactly what I needed to hear at that time. I have much respect and admiration for her.

I don't keep up on the royal family enough to know the answer to this question that crossed my mind today, but did Queen Elizabeth ever get to meet her namesake, Harry's daughter?

Publicly - it is not 100% certain. There were reports that when Harry was there for part of the Jubliee celebrations that was a meeting of around 15min. No photographs (if taken) have been made public. If I recall correctly "palace sources" confirmed there was a meeting between Harry & Charles, and Harry & the Queen...but there was no public confirmation if either or both children were present for those. If The Queen met Harry's daughter, it was only once and for a very short time. And let's not forget that Harry sat silent while his wife accused the Queen of not giving Archie the title of Prince because he's black.

Thanks for the info. The idea just crossed my mind that it seemed sad that one would name a child after a living relative, have the ability to take the child to meet said relative, but perhaps never have actually done that. I mean, granted, the whole situation with Harry & the family is sad, but that just struck me today.

H&M jumped the announcement that they'd left the Firm surprising everyone because they said the news had been leaked to the press and they wanted to control it...maybe it was something similar? Despite all the shade they've thrown him, King Charles doesn't seem the petty sort.

To be fair , judging from the timing of the announcement I suspect she had actually passed before the others arrived too. I think the wording “earlier this afternoon “is significant and also think they would have taken the helicopter between Aberdeen and Balmoral if there had been a chance of getting there in time to see her.

The only family at the Queen’s side when she died were Prince Charles and Princess Anne as they were both in Scotland already. I think Camilla may have been around too. The rest of the family didn’t make it in time.

The rest of the family didn’t make it in time. Which also further explains why Catherine opted to stay behind. It's such a shame that at least the Queen's children were not all able to be there. It just seems like these final moments happened so very quickly, and no matter what we may think of some of them as people, she was their mother.

Prince Harry has left Balmoral to go to Aberdeen airport. Im not surprised. I really wonder how much of a role he has in things going forward? I assume he will show up for the funeral. But other than that, I wonder what else he’d be expected to do in the coming days? I highly doubt much of his family probably wants him around much after the history of the past few years.
