Go! UPDATE:I'm VERY happy with the baking method elaine sent a link to: www.bhg.com/recipes/beef/how-to-brown-ground-beef/ Thanks, Elaine! 1 lined three aluminum sheet pans with foil, shiny side up and crumbled about 2 lbs. of beef onto each one. Covered with foil, shiny side down and baked at 400F, convection mode for 15 minutes. (I was going to stir and rotate the pans at this point, but it was done.) I drained the cooked beef through a metal colander, broke up the chunks with metal flipper, then drained on unbleached paper towels. I'll now be making bean-free chili and will def. do it this way again for large batches! Thanks to all who replied... I've never frozen already cooked beef but it's a great idea!

In batches or a couple of frying pans going at once. I would often buy a warehouse pack and cook ot all then freeze it in portions. Quicker to take out and just reheat vs unthaw and cook raw meat.

As in how to brown it all at once?
I have a huge stainless steel pot we use for mussels. I’d put in on my extra large/combo stove top burner.
Also could use a large roaster on the stove top.
Just kept stirring and breaking the chunks up.

I would do 1.5-2 pounds at a time in my largest skillet

Do you need it browned our cooked through? If it just needs to be cooked through for other uses, I’d cook it in 2-3 batches in the Instant Pot. If you have large cookie sheets, you could also brown in the oven. This article has some good instructions: www.bhg.com/recipes/beef/how-to-brown-ground-beef/

I don't need it browned. I am making a large quantity of chili for DD's freezer and bought a large pack of ground beef at Costco last night. I'm going to check out the article. i do have large cookie sheets and thought I'd heard of an oven method... thanks!! ETA: I'm going to try the oven method using 3 large sheet pans. I'll let you know how it goes.

I do a lot of cooking ahead this time of year, and that includes a lot of browned ground beef.
I have a couple pretty large skillets, and I do 3# in each. I have one of those ground meat choppers, that makes breaking up ground meat so much easier while browning. I have an OXO one, but Pampered Chef makes a good one too.
If I am making meat for walking tacos or maidrites, I season in the pan when cooking. Transfer to a cake pan to cool. Then I weight out 1 pound amounts and put in freezer quart bags. I lay them flat and flatten the meat and squeeze out as much air as possible. I use the dull side of a bread knife the make a 'cross' indention. This way I have 4 quarters in each bag - if I only want a small amount, I can break off a chunk without thawing it all out.
I freeze plain browned ground beef, spaghetti meat, taco meat and maidrite meat.

Cooking several pounds of ground turkey was always part of my monthly routine. I would buy it at Costco and put part in my instant pot to be used in taco soup, and then using my two large cast iron pots, I would brown the remaining meat. I would separate the cooked meat into two-cup portions and transfer them to sealing bags to be put in the freezer. I would shop from those cooked meat packages for soups, tacos, quesadillas, or whatever I needed.
I have never heard of using the oven and cookie sheets. I'm going to have to give that a try.

I wouldn’t do more then one pound at the time or it will never brown. I often brown more than a pound at a time. I think it depends more on the size of your skillet or pan. I have a pretty large iron skillet that I used to use to brown 2-3 pounds at once. Six pounds might be too much for one pan, though.

I would brown it in a pot, in probably two batches. When I make chili, I brown the meat in the same pot I cook the chili in. I use very lean beef, so there is not a lot of fat that comes out.

This sounds so much easier than what I have been doing. Especially having to wash two heavy cast iron pots and the Instant Pot. When I started thinking about using the oven, I was worried about splatter mess. It didn't occur to me to cover the meat with more foil. Duh! I think I have been away from cooking for too long already and I have several more months to go before I get into a kitchen of my own. But when I do, I am absolutely using this method for cooking large batches of ground meat.

Knowing she already did the oven method.
I do 5-6 lbs in my crockpot all the time (2hrs on high) and freeze in mostly 1# packages. I also use one of those choppers thing to break it up while it cooks.

Love having precooked ground beef in the freezer. I need to do it more often. Me too, but the past few years we've boughten a 4H steer from my niece so everything is already frozen. I miss grabbing some frozen cooked ground beef right at supper time and having something ready right away.

I miss grabbing some frozen cooked ground beef right at supper time and having something ready right away. That makes it a bit more difficult I have just gotten lazy. I need to do this again the next time I buy ground beef but I have a lot of packs from Costco and Sam’s in about 1 pound packs and need to use them up. I have steamer trays and I do them in the oven wipe with paper towels and then stick them in the DW so not hard at all.

I know you've already done yours in the oven, but for future use, I do mine in the microwave.
I put the ground beef in a plastic colander over a larger bowl and cook on high. Timing depends on how much you're making of course. I can do about two pounds in around 10-15 minutes. About halfway through, I break it up a little, then continue until it's cooked. The fat drains into the bottom bowl. I dump the cooked beef into a large bowl and use a pastry cutter to break it up.
When it's on sale, I buy lots of it, cook it and freeze in one pound packages.

A type of loose meat sandwich, I think they're like sloppy joes but no sauce. Maybe cheese on em.

Using so much foil gets expensive. Have you checked the price of foil?
I use my larger electric skillet. Very easy & quick with minimal cleanup.

I forgot... this was my go to method for a long time. Guess I haven't cooked ground beef in a long time, since DH became vegetarian. I stopped because I got skeeved out cooking oily food in plastic in the microwave. I don't think it's the healthiest, something about the oil in food absorbing chemicals during the cooking process.

I buy the jumbo rolls that come in a 2 pack at Costco and last forever. Sooo much cheaper than the small rolls from the market. I found that the three top sheets of foil were clean, just needed a quick wipe in a couple of spots. I folded them loosely and will reuse them.
