I really don't think he will run in 2024, but it is too soon for him to say that. He doesn't want to be a lame duck for the next two+ years. That being said, I do think it is quite hypocritical for the same people who revere Trump and don't mention his age or "gaffes" or doubt he is too old to run again, to show excessive "concern" for Biden. I have trust that if Biden is struggling cognitively to the point where he can't do the job, he has people who will tell him that and guide him positively. Unlike Trump who had only yes men who would lie to him or hide everything that might offend him, including keeping the USS McCain out of his sight on a trip.

xactly this - I like Biden - but the presidency is an incredibly taxing job. I don't think people in their 70s should run, let alone 80s. Totally agree--and I'm 75 myself! Let's get some younger people in there!

I am another that thinks Biden should not run again. Normal life is stressful, a President’s life is much more. There is no shame to step away and enjoy your life.

It is quite likely he was looking for Jackie Speier D-CA who has cosponsored hunger addressing bills recently. The Congresswoman from IN had nothing to do with those. This information opportunity was sharing progress on hunger issues. Wish the WH would call out this stupid take.

Yes, he misspoke and also missed an opportunity to remember her for the work that she had done. His staff should have been on top of that after she passed away. He has gaffes sometimes. The thing that's sad to me is that he remembered that she was one of the writers of the bill and wanted to recognize her. His intentions were so good and yet, the mistake was bad. I can think of a thousand worse things, where someone started with cruel intentions and said terrible things over and over again, but yes, Biden made a mistake. Except it was Jackie Speier D-CA who was a bill co sponsor and she might well have been attendance. Walorski R-IN was the one who passed.

Speier was a co sponsor of a bill to end veteran hunger. Walorski was co sponsor of a bill to convene a White House conference on food, nutrition, hunger, and health. That was what Biden was speaking about.

You notice not one of these right wingers ever discusses even one of the ridiculous, ignorant things that the orange idiot says. Until they spend as much time bitching about the hate he spews they have no credibility. They are as ignorant and insecure as their orange god.

I don't recall any right wing concern for Trump's mental state when he posts random Capitalization in all His Truths. When he called his current wife Melanie. When he said he met the President of the Virgin Islands. Calling the CEO of Apple Tim Apple (and all the subsequent and ridiculous denials and excuses for that one), Saying America's greatest achievement was the abolition of Civil Rights. Believing Fredrick Douglass was alive. Etc, etc. Until someone shows us where any of the Orange Menace's believers called any of those out I don't see any point discussing Biden's competency or mental state or health with them.

No, I don’t like Trump. (Not relevant to this thread but have to lead with it or else it is assumed you have to be a Trump supporter if you say something negative about a person on the left).
Yes, he messed up.
Yes, it is a bit embarrassing.
No, it is nothing world shattering where we should all be in panic about the implications of it.
Yes, you can still support the President AND acknowledge his slip ups rather than defend him on everything or do the but but but the former did this. Don’t worry, if you acknowledge he made a mistake you can still be a supporter. You don’t automatically get changed to being a republican. You will be able to maintain your party affiliation on your voter registration card.
Signed, Not a democrat, not a republican, but a US citizen tired of the hypocrisy of both democrats and republicans and believe these type of people are the ones destroying our country, not the buffoons in the senate or the house.

One of the joys one encounters when they enter the 70s and beyond is sometimes they forget something. But that no way means as someone rudely suggested “they aren’t all there”, it just means they forgot something at that particular moment.
An example. I was having a conversation with a friend about what I thought was an ugly building recently built by me. For the life of me I couldn’t remember one specific term I wanted to use to describe the building. So after struggling for a time we changed the subject. About an hour after the conversation, out of no where, the term popped into my mind. Curb appeal.
It happens but means nothing.
If one has been paying attention Joe Biden is always giving remarks about something. Sometimes twice a day. And he holds a lot meetings.
If he “wasn’t all there” the people around him would limit his public time kind of like they did with Reagan at the end of his term. But they aren’t.
I have always referred to Joe Biden as ‘Uncle Fluffy” because over the years he has said something that makes one go huh. That has not changed. At the same time I have noticed how quick he can make a remark, when it’s not prepared, that makes the point he is trying to make. He also has a sense of humor a lot of people are either not getting or deliberately ignoring for the simple reason to make him look bad by suggesting “he’s not all there”.
I do agree people in their 70’s+ should not run for President in general. But at the same time we can’t dismiss candidates that have the ability to do the job because they are gay, or a woman or a person of color or because they come from California.
Bottom line, as someone who is in their 70’s and carefully watching President Biden’s words and actions, I think he’s doing just fine.

I think many of us recognized and acknowledged that Biden and Harris made mistakes. Biden frequently makes gaffes and most of them are reported in mainstream media. Every time Biden makes a mistake, there are gotcha threads like this proclaiming that he has dementia. Right wing media also frequently turns every mistake into dementia. Quite often, small mistakes and gaffes are blown way out of proportion. As an example, starting before the election, the OP often declares that Biden will not be president for the full term. And only time will tell, but 2 years later, he's doing just fine and his mental acuity seems just fine. As someone else pointed out, Biden surrounded himself with honest, ethical people who will be truthful with him, regardless of the consequences. If anyone in his family, staff or cabinet thinks he needs to step down, I trust they will say something to him. The same could not be said of Trump. At the end, there was no one willing to stand up to him. Trump supporters and right wing media never miss an opportunity to criticize Biden for these mistakes. At the same time, they almost never acknowledge Trump's many mistakes. Many people are understandably frustrated and aggravated by the blatant hypocrisy. Sorry, but I don't think this is a both sides argument.

I also very rarely participate in political threads because they aren’t conducive to having discussions. To be clear I do believe there are a lot of peas that will have meaningful discussions. I really enjoy those conversations and having my mind opened up by someone with a differing opinion. They may not change my mind but at least I understand why they feel the way I do. Unfortunately both sides have some whackadoodle extremists and they tend to monopolize the threads. To be fair, both parties also recognize their whackadoodles are out of line but until the whackadoodles realize it the days of yore where we had some good discussions are just a memory.

This is the thing that makes the right wingers so dangerous, their inability to shoulder responsibility for their mistakes. Liberals do place blame squarely where it belongs even if the blame lands on their fellow Democrats. That make Libs fair and secure within themselves.
The only conclusion that a thinking person can draw from those who would criticize Biden and say he has dementia, but never one word about a truly evil, ignorant, criminal and all of his dick suckers is this…..those on the right know they have been conned, drank the kool-aid and are the most insecure people on the planet. They feel less than everyone else. They don't have enough integrity and self respect to be honest and stop with the hypocrisy and conduct themselves accordingly. They don't have the ability to understand that they would have respect and self worth if they stopped trying to gaslight. It isn't working.
They are dangerous and are too damned dumb to understand they are screwing themselves. Not one Liberal expects nor wants them to give up their conservative views. But if they were honest, decent, intelligent people they would give up the hypocrisy and the gotcha and respect themselves…but they won’t because that is who they are deep down inside.
Compare the right wingers with abusive spouses. Abusers are insecure people with no self worth. They gaslight, try to control and terrorize their spouses. They spend all day, every day obsessing on how to put down their spouse so that they can feel superior. They cower with insecurity then strike.
Same as most right wingers.

This pretty much sums up the “Joe Biden is a senile, drooling old man led around by the hand by Jill” trope favored by the right. I have seen him speak live, and obviously, no way could someone in total dementia handle the pressure of responding to questions, and as mentioned above, with humor and intelligence. But if hannity et al say it often enough, it becomes an accepted alternate fact. Yeah, he did misspeak, but who hasn’t? At least it was a gaffe, and not a mean-spirited, intentional, childish name-calling stunt, which is a tru*p specialty, the likes of which is STILL being relished by his cult members.

In my opinion, in terms of the country and politics in general, the extremists in both parties is not a both sides argument. This opinion expresses better than I can why polarization isn't the problem, right wing extremism is the problem. Gift article - no paywall wapo.st/3RmX2TV www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/09/28/polarization-right-wing-extremism-maga-republicans/Jim Kessler, executive vice president for policy of the moderate think tank Third Way, tells me, “Moderates and mainstream Democrats romped with only a handful of exceptions.” He points to a 77 percent success rate in primaries for candidates endorsed by the moderate NewDem Action Fund
Meanwhile, MAGA extremists have dominated GOP primaries,
It’s not polarization when one party recognizes the results of a democratic election and the other does not. That’s radicalization of the GOP.
“Polarization” is an easy dodge for those in the mainstream media who remain addicted to false balance and moral equivalence. Instead of pointing to one party’s descent into delusions and radicalism, they advance the false idea that both parties are becoming extreme. Perhaps the media should level with voters: We have only one mainstream, pro-democratic national party.

I’m a moderate Republican who voted for Biden in the last election. I found this “gaffe” to be concerning. This sums it up pretty well for me. I lean more left than right but tend to be pretty moderate on most issues. I found this blunder to be concerning too. While I don't think Biden's age is necessarily relevant to his ability to do his job there are things coming out all the time that I see that just remind me of when my grandma had dementia in her early 70s. I am NOT saying that Biden has dementia, simply that some of these gaffes cause me to pause and wonder if he isn't in some type of mental decline. My grandma frequently forgot people that had died and asked about them. Aging is hard. I can't imagine trying to be a world leader in my 80s, and with how rigorous campaigning is I think it would be in his best interest as well as everyone else's if he did not run again.

Trump said a lot of stupid stuff. He still does, actually. He does it because he's an egotistical buffoon.
The difference with Biden is that he seems genuinely confused and unaware at times, and it's more than just misspeaking or making a simple mistake.
YMMV and that's fine.

What do you say about Trump's inability to drink a bottle of water? Of looking directly at the eclipse? Or Covefe? Of saying Melania couldn't be with him at an event when she was standing right next to him? Those aren't based on his egotistical buffoness. Those were a lot more indicative of being confused then Biden's gaffe.

Another reason the extremists in both parties are not the same - the extremists on the right are encouraging political violence. For weeks, Trump fired up his supporters with lies about the election, then invited them to DC and on Jan 6 encouraged them to "fight like hell". He's since promised to pardon insurrectionists. Recently, Trump threatened problems like we've never seen if he gets indicted. Lindsey Graham echoed this sentiment and said there would be riots in the streets. www.politico.com/news/2022/09/15/trump-warns-of-problems-like-weve-never-seen-if-hes-indicted-00056911Trump even turned on his own party and attacked McConnell. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/10/01/trump-mcconnell-attack/On Friday, the former president posted on his Truth Social platform that McConnell has a “DEATH WISH” for having supported legislation to keep the government operating through mid-December — language that could easily be read by his highly combustible supporters as inviting violence against the GOP leader who seems to have taken up residence under Trump’s gossamer-thin skin.
Here's a comprehensive look at Trump's support and encouragement of white supremacy and political violence from 2015 to 2021. www.vox.com/21506029/trump-violence-tweets-racist-hate-speechThe progressives on the Democratic side are not the same as the far right extremists on the right embracing violence if necessary. Not a both sides argument.

Trump yesterday threatened the senate minority leader with death and made a racist remark about his wife. He sat watching TV and cheering for a group of armed insurrectionists to kill Mike Pence, Nancy Pelosi and others, and when they failed, he told them he loved them and they were very special. He took home highly classified documents and left them where anyone could get them. That’s just a small sampling of the dangerous things he’s done/said on purpose. He’s a bit more than just an “egotistical buffoon.”

I think I was the first one to jump on the “but Trump said … ” bandwagon in this thread. Believe me, it doesn’t mean I can’t tell when Joe Biden makes another gaffe. Joe Biden’s gaffes are so freakin’ unimportant in comparison to Trump’s gaffes AND purposeful, uncalled-for personal attacks that this OP wouldn’t dream of posting a critical thread about, that my life is too short for wasting time on nodding my head in agreement. Yes, this was a cringe-worthy mistake. That said, Joe Biden could be in a coma and still be a better president than Trump. I am not going to change my mind or my ways on this. If the political threads bother you, it’s okay not to open them. Laurie
