THIS is in my neighborhood. Read the property details first, then look at the pictures. Had no idea he lived here. It's a weirdly normal and then oh, not so normal, house. 5 million dollars - 2 bedrooms. And you have to redecorate and get rid of all his stuff. Even for Fairfield County, that's ridiculously steep. They'll never get it. 2 mil, maybe. Likely not even that.

But the seller doesn’t want you to get rid of his collections.

So whoever inherited this property doesn't want to deal with cleaning it out or staging and is trying to foist the legacy on a new custodian? I find that incredibly sad.

What an odd, odd listing. Basically buy me for an exorbitant price, but don’t you dare change a thing about it.

It doesn't seem sad to me, it seems like they're trying to keep his stuff together for someone who might really appreciate it. Sounds like he really enjoyed his art collection and wanted someone else to care for it too. PS never heard of him, had to Google. I hope someone comes along who will appreciate it all.

so in reality, you are buying his intellectual property but you get the house as a bonus?

If I'm reading correctly, you wouldn't only be buying his house. You'd be buying his life. I would just hope that the estate allows for the buyer to lighten up the walls. It's very dark.
Imagine owing the house of the man who wrote all those fabulous songs. It's a piece of music history.

I read the description out loud to DH and he recognized the name. He asked if he is the one who worked with Meatloaf on Bat Out of Hell.
One quick Google search revealed that this dude had a really long career and worked with many artists, including, yes, Meatloaf.
I loved DH's reaction when I said there was over 6000 ft of living space but only 2 bedrooms. "Only 2 bedrooms in 6000 square foot of house!?! What the hell else is in there?"
The pictures were not what I was expecting. Way too much blue and weird ass ceilings.
Thanks for the link! Was a great conversation with DH.

The outside of the house is very charming. The first few picture of the interior were nice, then it it just went dark.

But the seller doesn’t want you to get rid of his collections. So, then you're stuck with a 2 bedroom cottage in CT that looks like a gothic nightmare. I'm a huge fan of his - honestly. I think "Bat Out of Hell" is one of the greatest rock albums ever written. But I wouldn't want to own everything of his with no option of ever doing my own thing with the house. Or his items. It's such a strange request.

I've never heard of this artist but it seems to me that it's the kind of listing that would be right for a museum dedicated to the artist. Is there that much interest in something like that? Especially in a family neighborhood?
Otherwise a buyer could buy the house, gut the interior (to me it's hideous) and sell all of the memorabilia either piece by piece or in it's entirety to a group interested in starting a museum dedicated to the artist in a better location. But that's a lot of work, especially for that inflated price.

The name meant nothing to me but dh knew who he was straight away. I actually quite like the dark colouring mixed with the warm wood but found it weirdly discomforting to see the wheelchair (photo 16). And the purpose of the large table in the bedroom escapes me. All I could come up with was perhaps he did a lot of paperwork in there as he became less mobile. 🤷♀️ A couple of the sculptures (ie photos 30 & 31) were unexpected, although perhaps not to someone familiar with him, and does anyone know if the “69” on the dining room wall has any meaning other than the first that springs to mind? ETA: I’ve just done a bit of googling and found this story about the listing (no paywall but I was invited to subscribe) which was a great read! For instance, I learned “The asking price is $5,555,569 — the $69 is a tribute to Mr. Steinman’s beloved Amherst College, where he graduated with the class of 1969...” Also, apparently the wall colour is dubbed “obsidian blue”. And the executor of his estate thinks the house could be sold to a school or institution and used for a combination of living, office and performance space. I don’t know how realistic that is but after reading the article I’m rooting for it. 😎

It seems someone can’t be bothered to find a home for all the stuff and hopes to pass along the burden to someone else. The 2 bedrooms seem a bit strange but I’m sure some of those spaces could be turned into another bedroom or two. I like the nearby house better even if it is a bit smaller.

I knew who it was. The outside is beautiful, the inside is way too moody for me. Though there is some interesting art in there.
I'm having trouble seeing how he put $6 million into it, unless they are counting the art.

I remember "50 Cent" having a hard time selling his house in Farmington. My husband worked on the house owned by Whoppi Goldberg and it didn't go for that price!

From Wikipedia:
James Richard Steinman (November 1, 1947 – April 19, 2021) was an American composer, lyricist and record producer.[1] He also worked as an arranger, pianist, and singer. His work included songs in the adult contemporary, rock, dance, pop, musical theater, and film score genres. He produced albums for Bonnie Tyler and for Meat Loaf, including Bat Out of Hell (one of the best-selling albums in history)[2] and Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell.
His most successful chart singles include Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart", Air Supply's "Making Love Out of Nothing at All", Meat Loaf's "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)", the Sisters of Mercy's "This Corrosion" and "More", Barry Manilow's "Read 'Em and Weep", Celine Dion's cover of "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" (originally released by Steinman's project Pandora's Box) and Boyzone's "No Matter What" (the group's first and only single to be popular and chart in the US). Steinman's only solo album Bad for Good was released in 1981.
Steinman's work also extended to musical theater, where he began his career. Steinman was credited with the book, music, and lyrics for Bat Out of Hell: The Musical, as well as lyrics for Whistle Down the Wind, and music for Tanz der Vampire.
He may have had success but he is no Paul McCarthy or Stephen Sondheim. I think he thinks a bit too much of himself.

It's hard to believe he spent $6 million on the construction. Maybe the original, plus multiple renovations but that does not justify the currrent price.

I found the giant 69 on the dining room wall a bit jarring, but then it all began to make sense as I paid closer attention to the art. Apparently, he liked getting his freak on through his art.
I'd take a hard pass on the house at just about any price. The outside looks like three or four homes pasted together. The inside seems disjointed with poor flow. And I hate all the somber colors - it would cost a pretty penny to get all that painted over.

I’ve never heard of him, but once I read he wrote Boyzone’s “No Matter What”… plus all the other songs he contributed to, I must say I am impressed and have a better appreciation of how his friends would like to honor him and his talent.

I have a friend who lost her original home to a fire and so they rebuilt a new home with 5,500 square feet and two bedrooms. They said it was their dream home (no kids) and made it all specifically for what they wanted and didn't worry about resale. Their downstairs is 2,300 square feet almost all open space with a bathroom and a walk in fireproof vault (about 300 square feet). They built in a bar with stained glass windows on the sides, an arcade area, a game area with a table for gambling and cards, and a huge area where they have couches and a tv. It is best entertainment space ever. They also have a cool loft that is open to the entire first floor that could double as a sleeping space for guests if needed. I was kind of surprised that they only have 2 bedrooms, but it does work for them. They entertain every week.

On a busy road and literally next door to our high school. But a really pretty house for sure. I just saw it on the same page as the other one, so it was a quick comparison with what it had that the other one didn't/did..... Funny thing is I had a friend years ago who decided to buy a house next to the high school. She said it was great with the kids on sports and after school activities. She didn't have to drive to get them all the time.
