This seems like a stupid question, but how do you line up your paper on your trimmer? I've been making a lot of cards lately and when I score them with a scoring board it's always a hair's width off.
So, if you're going to cut something at 4 inches, do you place the paper right on the edge of the 4 inch line, try to put the edge right on the middle of the line, or something else?
Thanks!

I just try to line it right at the 4 line. The line is pretty skinny so my motto is "close enough" or I'd never get anything done.

My line isn't very skinny, I guess. I need to pay more attention to where I line up, because it varies about 1/8".

Sometimes the paper you start with isn't exactly right, either. So I measure as best I can, then score and fold, and if I'm not very happy with the folded card, I might trim it down some more after I see how the fold is.

I notice that I'm a hair off when I'm lining up on the top but forget the bottom... Also as someone else said some papers are just not straight!

This is what I do - shave the extra down with a pair of scissors if it's out. I was having terrible troubles getting a straight cut with my Fiskers rotary cutter. I changed over to one similar to this one (also Fiskars) and have had much better results.

If you score is a hairs width too big, cut just a tiny bit smaller. If your score is a tiny bit too small, cut just a tiny bit bigger. It doesn't sound like you need the exact measurement as much as you just need the measurements on two different tools to work together.

Not sure if this helps, but if I'm making a card/card base... I fold my 8-1/2x11 in half whichever way I need it to open, and then measure and cut from the fold... I'm not sure it means that 4" is then exactly 4", but it does make the front and back the identical size...
