Update:
Had the mammogram and ultrasound today that determined it was, in fact, a cyst. Yay! Glad my doc was wrong on this one. U/S tech said no need for a biopsy, but I guess we'll see what my doc says. Cyst definitely made the most sense because it popped up so quickly. She also said the other boob was full of cysts--but I already knew I had fibrocystic breasts.
Anyway, I will be checking the girls out more frequently in the future, because suddenly finding something so big really freaked me out and I know dense breasts put you in a higher risk category.
Thanks again for all the positive vibes and sending positive thoughts back to all of you who have had less fortunate news.
Original Post:
Last Friday I found a 4 cm lump in my breast. Doc doesn't think it's a cyst and didn't give me any words of reassurance when I saw him (not typical for him). I'm about 3 months overdue for my mammo--the last one was July 21.
How the heck did this thing not show on my last mammo? Or how did it get so big so fast? How did I not notice it? My right breast is also now about 1/2 cup larger than the left--how did I not see that before? I clearly do not spend enough time staring at my own boobs.
My mammo is scheduled for Monday (did antibiotics for a week "just in case"). I wish we could just jump straight to a biopsy--we already know there's a lump. It's been a tough week!

Mine came out of no where (non cancerous lump) due to hormone fluctuations.
I have mammogram, 2 weeks later the U/S biopsy, about 4 weeks later surgery.

Yep. I also got my first callback on a mammogram earlier this year. It ended up being nothing, but I did officially start menopause over the past year. So it was definitely hormones causing the change. Hoping yours is also nothing.

Here's hoping it is nothing to worry about. Does cancer in the breast even grow that fast? I would think a cyst could fill quickly like that though. That is what I'm hoping this is. Please let us know when you can.

Glad they caught it early. You'd think our bodies could at least send up flares when something goes amiss.

Even though breast cancer has such a high cure rate, the word cancer is terrifying. I hope you discover what this is and resolve it as quickly as possible.

I am adding my prayers for it being benign. I HATE that you have to wait for your mammogram. There needs to be a protocol for seeing you immediately.

I think I could have gotten in sooner, but I had a lot of pain and swelling when I went in and the doc wanted me on antibiotics for a week "just in case" it was related to an infection to settle things down before the imaging. In hindsight, I think that part was just PMS-type breast pain, but I had an ablation and haven't had periods in over a decade, so it's hard for me to track hormonal swings. I guess it was a blessing in disguise, because the sore boobs is what led to finding the lump. PSA-do your monthly breast exams--I was definitely not doing them regularly.

Best wishes to you.
I’m another who got my first callback on a mammo this year. It’s terrifying! Mine turned out to be nothing and I hope yours does, too.
My doctor told me when she called with the results that the vast majority of these things turn out to be nothing of concern, but they underplay that because in the event that it is something, it’s so important that a woman actually goes back for that follow up.

Sending prayers and positive vibes your way! I get called back every time for mammograms. I have very dense breasts and am prone to cysts. Last year I went to my normal mammogram right at the 12 month mark. 4 months later, my doctor felt a lump that I never felt. She sent me to get a mammogram. They told me that was a new lump that didn't show up in the last mammogram. When I was on the table waiting to be biopsied, the radiologist told me that it looked like a solid mass. It really seemed like he was trying to prepare me for bad news. Then he inserted the biopsy needle and said "hmmm." He and the nurse looked at each other then he said I have good news. That lump just collapsed, which means it was a cyst after all." I know it's easier said than done, but try to stay positive. A majority of those call backs end up being nothing. Keep us posted!

Thank you for sharing. Your difficult story makes me feel a bit better, but I'm sorry you had to go through that. I also have dense and fibrocystic breasts, and I've had callbacks before, but nothing serious. At my last scan, the tech said to me that she couldn't believe that I had borne or breastfed children because my breasts were so dense. That seemed not very professional or quite medically accurate, but I just let it roll.
