Did your Michaels store get self checkouts?
Mine did. Four of them. Card only. One cashier. The one line format has turned into a chaotic mess. No one knew where to go, where to stand, what to do. The one cashier didn't seem to know what to do. Those wanting to use the self check, had to squeeze past those waiting for the one cashier.
Hopefully they figure it out, and move the merchandise stands around to make two lines, one line for self check and one for the cashier.
I got a $5.00 off $10, for today only. Got some stickers. But the line chaos, good grief!

I went to my local one a couple of weeks ago and there weren't any self checkout stands. Maybe yours is a test store for it?

Yes! I’m so thankful for them. Our Michael’s is super understaffed and I used to wait 30 min in line to check out.

I hadn't been to Michael's in a while and went in the last week. We have one row of self-checkouts and one row of cashiers. There was only one cashier on that side.

I don't mind self checkout, but I don't like kiosks, there's nobody to yell at.

Oh I hope mine gets some! Usually only 1 checker who is sooooooo slow and super chatty. 99% of the time I am there to get my stuff and get out.
My Albertson's has self checkout and I try to use that unless I have a weeks worth of groceries. Again, I am quicker.

I will say from my daughter's perspective, she prefers self check out. She doesn't have to make eye contact or small talk and can go at her own pace. She has Autism + and other disabilities. So they can be a benefit for many.

So they can be a benefit for many. I like them for there reasons: 1 IME they're much faster. I'm in and out. 2 I always seem to get the one cashier who is super slow, doesn't know what they're doing, is overly chatty or asks stupid questions (ex. as they ring up an item they'll look at me and say "this looks good, did you get it here?" ) 3 I can bag my items the way I'd like them bagged.

So just curious. Are they not worried about people scanning one sheet of cardstock and bagging three or four? (or any small item, really?). Seems like counting the paper I have already counted is what takes most of the cashier's time when I am checking out of M's.

I would be ok with this because the Michael's near me is always understaffed (one person at checkout it seems 80% of the time) and the waits could be pretty long.

Out of curiosity I ran into our store today and nope! No self checkouts here (yet). The store was a complete mess and the check out line was no less than 10 people deep.

ours did and i used it. they only got one though.
i haven't been to Michaels much since the pandemic started. the variety and quality of their stuff just took a nose dive since then. not to mention how stingy they got with their coupons. so i finally go in there a few months ago and that's when i noticed the self check out. as much as i love self check out, i don't think that's enough incentive to bring the crowds back but it was incentive for me to get checked out of there quickly.

So it will alert if there are items not scanned in that area.

If they're anything like the self check-outs they have at my local CVS, they're a nightmare. Especially when people who don't know how to use them pick the busiest time of day to "learn." The machines often don't recognize when I put something in the bag after I scan it, and then a cashier comes over to override the machine - not even checking to see if I did, in fact, scan everything in the bag. It's a good thing I'm so honest.

FYI, it’s basically a large computer monitor with a credit card slot and a scanner. There’s no scale or anything to weigh.
Given that so many stores do self check out, I’m sure there’s a risk mitigation policy in place. They have cameras at every kiosk, for example.

The thing is if people are going to steal crap from Home Depot or Lowe's and literally just walk out of those places and get away with it.. I am sure people are going to walk away with lots of small stuff and get away with it. It's not like it used to be. My son worked for Lowe's and people just walk out with items worth $100s of dollars and just get away with it.

Michaels has been horrible with staffing their check out lines. Not unusual to be seven sets of customers behind before they call someone. And even then they wait a good ten minutes for the line to get longer. Someone is always there in a minute, so you know they have people to help. I hope we go to self check out.

Ran into my Michaels yesterday. They do now have the self-check out kiosks. I opted to not use one as there was only one other person in line. With the way their line gets most times when I'm there I'm fine with the self check out. I can still opt to wait for the cashier or if I'm in a hurry I can use the self-checkout. I do wish I would have paid attention to the number of self-checkouts compared to the number of places for an actual cashier.

I'm going to Michael's on Saturday so I'll see if we have self-checkouts there. I hope so, I really hate the slow staff at my Michael's. However, if its poorly laid out I can totally see everyone just standing in line and not understanding whether they're waiting for self check-out or cashier, everyone tends to just stand there like zombies. So, that will be fun.

I went to a Michael's about 7 miles from my house and they had self checkouts (which I LOVE BTW) and then I went to my local one (about 2 miles away) and they did not have self checkouts yet. One of the employees said she heard they aren't getting them until after Christmas but that could change if they can't hire enough people.

I hope mine does! Since they stopped accepting coupons and cut the scrapbook area down I rarely go there. And when I do, there are 15 people in line and one cashier. Super frustrating.

I am trying to imagine the chaos at mine on Black Friday with self checkouts and things not ringing up at the right price. Mine didn't have them last week, but I assume they are in the process.

I rarely bother going to Michaels, but not as far as I know.
Most people in my area (DFW) seem pretty honest overall, but I’m sure there are exceptions. Maybe the risk of loss is less than the cost of having to pay employees and their benefits?
It seems like cashiers are disappearing everywhere and being replaced by automatic kiosks. I saw it at McDonald’s first, but lately have seen it more and more elsewhere. I don’t normally mind the electronic check outs, but sometimes it can be a problem, especially if something goes wrong. I was at CVS yesterday. I needed a receipt for my purchase, so of course it was out of paper, and after the guy replaced the paper, he still couldn’t get it to print. I had to wait several minutes while they found a manager and got my receipt. From now on, I will request the email receipt, but there is still no guarantee. People can make mistakes, but a machine can make them, too.

I wish… I’ve never seen more than 1 cashier at mine in AK. They’re a really good thing these days when it’s hard to find hired help.
