Your local scrapbook store that didn't bring in a line by a very well-known company? I'm going to vent a little. I want to support local cause I can get my grubby hands on the product sooner than online. I went in looking for the new Prima, Candy Cane Lane collection and the owner said we didn't bring it in because every year it looks the same! I felt like saying, yah but it's Prima! How can you not bring a line that will sell. You have a lot of other Christmas lines. I was slightly annoyed because I came all the way across town to buy it and I didn't call first. I know my fault. Also I can't assume that they would bring it in too. But I thought for sure they would have it because it's been sold out all over the place online and at the other store I shop at. I had a bad case of FOMO.
Has this ever happened to you? Was there one specific line or item you tried to get and couldn't find in stock?

Not in a long time. I miss the days when the LSS was 10 minutes from my home. I worked there, taught classes there, but they closed, and I moved to an area with no LSS. I shop my stash. If I don’t have the paper I want, I have only myself to blame for refusing to buy online or drive the 75 minutes across horrific traffic to get to the one LSS worth visiting. Can you find the papers you want online, perhaps?

My not-so-local sb store owner refuses to deal with American Crafts, so (more than?) half the products in the scrapbooking world aren't carried in her store.

hockeyfan06, Frank Garcia Studio has the whole line in. (He's the designer, so they usually are pretty good about keeping his lines well stocked) You'll pay full price but they are amazing and really wonderful people and all my experiences with them have been great. www.frankgarciastudio.com/prima-candy-cane-lane

Yup! I went to the lss to get something. Can’t remember now what it was. Asked the store owner and she said, “I didn’t bring it in because it’s not what my customers like.” Who did she think she was talking to? I’m one of your customers lady! I know I didn’t shop there all the time as the store was an hour away but when I did I bought big. A fair bit of time went by before I went back. My husband came in with me. Seriously, the store was floor to ceiling floral everything. I like floral. But I also like variety. I said something to my husband about all the floral. We left without me buying anything. Next time I went back in the store had a wide variety of everything. Do you think she heard me?

My LSS owner sells lots of girly stuff. She's also well stocked in travel, but I would love more lines that aren't pastel-y pink flower centered. It is quite a large store for a paper crafting store, but if you took out everything that was for card making and pink, it would take out a large percentage of the store.

I hope you are able to find your Prima somewhere, hockeyfan06. I think the LSS's are really caught between the consumers who are looking for the newest and most exciting stuff and want everything right now and the manufacturers who produce limited editions and serve the big box stores first. This Canadian LSS has the stickers and ephemera in stock and they have good customer service. And This store is in the Edmonton area and has some of the papers in their on line store.

Depends on how big your local store is? Smaller stores can't carry all of the new Christmas collections. My 2 local stores are more stamp stores, but neither have a lot of Prima and nothing recent. Of the 2 stores I shop on-line, Paper issues has very little prima and nothing recent. paperissuesstore.myshopify.com/collections/primaSG has more prima, but no candy cane lane yet. I'm not sure if they will be getting any? scrapbookgeneration.com/brands/prima-marketing/I hope you can find the collection somewhere.

I went in looking for Shimelle Starshine (back when it was brand new) and she looked just as blank when I explained that it was an American Crafts line as when I said Shimelle. If she'd said she didn't want to buy from their mega-brand I could kind of understand that... although that would be annoying too. (Maybe it was my accent, although I don't know how wrong I could pronounce American Crafts that would make it impossible to understand).

I would love to have a lss. Yes I’m sure you would. How far is it for you to go to a papercrafting store? I'm lucky to be near a few and by that I mean anywhere from 20 mins to 4 hrs. A couple times a year we do road trips and visit most of the shops. So fun. It is impossible for a store to carry everything. Owners need to know their customers and not just buy what they like. Online shopping fills the voids.

So sorry to hear your LSS won’t bring it in. It’s a fabulous line and I have bought it a few times already after making several projects. Truthfully I’ve bought every Prima Christmas line and I find it hard to see they all look the same - in fact this years is most different than any of them, but just my thought 🙂

I get not being able to carry every line but when my lss was still open the owner didn't keep up with what was new and trending. I tried to support her but when the inventory was the same for months on end I just couldn't anymore. I did attend crops there frequently and bought essentials (adhesive, cardstock, etc) there frequently. Unfortunately she isn't in business anymore.

Over the years, I've noticed each store caters to whatever the owners scrapbook style and preference is. One store had very few stickers. One was all about vintage. One was all paper, cardstock and stickers, very few embellishments. If the store owner didn't care for a particular company, type of product, or particular style...then they didn't carry those products in the store.
Even when I was out of town and stopped by a scrapbook store(s), each store cater to a certain style of scrapbooking.
The online stores, offer the best variety of styles and type of products.

Back when we had a local shop, the owner would special order items for me. Cost was about the same as ordering myself online, but was a way to support the shop. Perhaps this owner would consider doing that.

My not-so-local sb store owner refuses to deal with American Crafts, so (more than?) half the products in the scrapbooking world aren't carried in her store. I fortunately still have an LSS that carries mostly everything, but I've noticed that our local Craft Warehouse chain appears to avoid American Crafts too. When it comes to paper lines and embellishments, they generally carry Simple Stories, Photoplay, Echo Park, Doodlebug, Carta Bella, Graphic 45 and occasionally Kaisercraft. They do carry We R tools and albums and DCWV paper pads though, so now I'm curious!

My LSS is closing November 30th. She carried most popular lines, but a business has to cater to the masses. Based on what is produced by the majority of manufacturers, the masses like pink and floral. These are not mega stores that get discounts for buying in bulk. She sees what inventory doesn’t sell. She always been willing to special order for her customers.
Anyway, I’m happy to report that she found a buyer who will take over December 1st. The new owner has a scrapbook/craft store about 2 hours away, so she knows the business. I’m curious to see what she stocks.

My LSS is about an hour away but it is close to the retreat I go to 2x a year so I stop in when I am at the retreat. The owner loves Tim Holtz & carries a ton of his stuff but when I went to get the Tim Holtz guillotine trimmer she didn't carry it so that was a bummer. I ended up ordering from Simon Says Stamp instead.

There is a small store in town called Room To Craft. I think they have about 2500 sq ft, but half is taken up with tables she rents out for crafting. As far as supplies they are mostly geared to card making, but the supplies are limited because of space. They also have snack food nd drinks for sale. there is also a very large array of stamps and tools and supplies free to table renters. It's kinda like a large well stocked scraproom.

I used to get annoyed because the lss workers didn't know brands or the latest items (even when they carried them) because they weren't scrapbookers. I remember asking if they were going to CHA and them acting like it was such a pain when I would have loved to go.

I was irritated when Craft Warehouse (local chain) advertised on Facebook a scrapbook line I was interested in was HERE and in stock. I drove to my closest store (probably dragging a cranky kid with me) and they didn't have it out yet. So annoying! Wolfpack by Heidi Swapp if anyone cares

That surprised me since they have classes...instant sales. But I know American Crafts has a high minimum for orders ($1500) but I am not sure if they would have to order a certain number of each item as well.

I do get annoyed. A friend asked a LSS to bring in a particular line and was given a very hard time about it and was basically told, well, if I bring it in you better buy all of it! Funny thing is that the bulk of the products from this designer have sold out in this store over and over, yet every time we ask if they will be getting the new line there is a big sigh and eye roll about bringing it in.
I also used to shop at an LSS where the owner would order entire collections but skip over any sheets that she personally didn't like--it was very frustrating if you wanted that particular sheet.
I don't mind ordering online, but shipping is expensive to Canada, and if I don't order from the US, I find that I have to order from multiple stores to get it all and the shipping really adds up

Sometimes it's very obvious why local stores close, isn't it? It seemed like a lot of stores were opened by scrapbookers who thought this would be fun…”pay wholesale” sell enough to support my craft and a fun place to hang out with my scrappy buddies. There was one store that publicized crops but was always booked. One of my friends asked if it was booked forever and the owner just shrugged.
